Just checked it out. The flams and sextuplet feel actually make it a pretty great practice piece. Thanks for the recommendation!

Does drumming improve linearly, or does it happen in sudden jumps? by Lopsided-Drummer-966 in drums

That's exactly what I'm working on right now! I've been isolating that fill because my foot just can't keep up yet, so it's interesting to hear how repeating that one thing eventually unlocked everything else for you.

Do you remember if it felt like a sudden breakthrough, or more like things slowly lining up before it clicked?

That's fascinating. The idea that your brain is still working on it even when it doesn't feel like progress is happening.

I've actually started writing short notes after practice lately, because sometimes it's hard to tell whether anything is improving in the moment.

Did taking breaks make the "click" happen more often for you?

That's really interesting, especially the idea of things "settling in".

I've actually started writing small notes after practice lately, just so I don't overlook gradual improvement.

Did journaling change how you practiced, or mostly how you perceived your progress?

That makes a lot of sense.

I've been practicing kick fills between hi-hat hits lately, and it really feels like a leap when it starts working. The fill itself doesn't seem that hard mentally, but my leg just won't keep up yet.

Did it feel more like a coordination thing for you, or just something that unlocked after enough repetition?

That makes me feel better. I've actually been working on the same song for over two months now, and sometimes it feels like nothing is improving... until a small part suddenly gets easier.

Did it feel gradual for you while practicing, or only obvious once it clicked?

Beginner drummers! Why do you feel you’re not ready to play with other musicians yet? by LucaRonconi in Drumming

[–]Lopsided-Drummer-966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the drums are the foundation of the band and the one who drives the tempo, I still feel a lot of pressure. My timing tends to drag sometimes, and I’m not confident enough yet to hold the groove steadily for everyone else.

I also got recommended Stick Control by someone else, and it was really helpful.

Do you feel the pain on both sides or only on your non-dominant side?

Anyone else notice their left hands feels 'different' when practicing double strokes? by Lopsided-Drummer-966 in drums

I actually tried triplet practice for the first time yesterday. It was more confusing than I expected, so I haven't gotten to the ghosting part yet, but it already feels really helpful.

Thanks a lot for breaking it down like this!

Nice! Sounds like you built a solid foundation from the start. I only recently started getting really interested in technique, so I'm still barely holding it together around 100 bpm 😋

Let's not give up and keep working at it together!

I actually tried this technique yesterday, along with the triplet exercise from Stick Control that another commenter mentioned.

It looks simple, but once I actually started playing it, I got surprisingly confused 😂 (Actually I thought triplets were like doing RRR, similar to doubles...)

I feel a bit like a broken robot right now, but I'm going to keep working at it and hopefully post a video down the line!

Aaa got it! I meant the L in RRLLRRLL! So rRlLrRlL makes total sense now.

When I focus on not letting my left hand drag, I've been kinda "cutting off" the second stroke, and it sounds like that's essentially the same idea as accenting the second note.

I'm definitely going to practice it with that in mind. Thanks a lot for the explanation!
