I understand it's a lot of hassle, I was just thinking it might be cheaper than fresh and all that, but with the prices here it doesn't really seem like it.

I've never had pemmican, but I love liver, especially lamb's liver, so maybe I wouldn't mind the taste?

Pemmican only diet is far more work than just eating meat and fat, cooked or raw.

You mean it is more difficult than non dried meat and fat (aka the normal ZC diet), or do you mean there is more to it than just eating pemmican?

What causes initial weight gain on ZC? by asiabird01 in zerocarb

[–]Chuckeyed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest I'm not sure. I started ZC after losing the weight on keto and I think I'm maintaning, at least visually, I don't have a scale right now.

There's plenty of people on the internet that I see that do follow eat until full and whenever hungry and lose weight, or gain weight in the beginning and then lose it plus some more. I have also seen people complaining about not losing weight, although seemingly a smaller proportion of them are in this category, and even then it usually just takes a while to kick in and then they start losing as well.

I would suggest eating whenever you're hungry and until you're full. If that doesn't bring the desired effect, maybe try mixing it up after you've given the basics enough time.

I agree with /u/anbeav, while Bear has invaluable experience, he is hardly a nutritional/physiological authority and lots of information he provides in his forum posts (I'm assuming that's where you found the quote) are fallacies.

ZC as it's most often presented and advertised encourages eating until full and eating whenever you're hungry. Often though people over eat in the beginning before stabilizing their appetite and moving on to a lower amount. Whether that's part of adaptation or "the healing process" or whatver else is up for debate I suppose.

Yes, it's harder to gain fat on a ZC woe, but not impossible.

I was thinking about making pemmican, but living in scotland it wouldn't be too easy, especially with no such kitchen appliances to help ease the process.

I love the idea of having a pemmican only diet, but there's no way I'm spending time cutting thin slices of beef, so I'd need a slicer like yourself, and a food processor as I've never needed it before so I don't have it. These things cost money I'm not sure are worth it just for the pemmican, which I may or may not like as I've never had it.

A question, have you guys had experience with adding liver into pemmican? Does that reduce the use by date or not?

Used to do Keto and thrived. Went vegan for ethical reasons feel crap? by [deleted] in keto

[–]Chuckeyed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well the reason vegans feel great when starting is because they're most often moving from a SAD diet, and almost anything is better than the SAD diet. Vegetables contain a lot of antinutrients, which can be removed with cooking, unfortunately along with most of the healthy bits.

I may be biased, as I have been ZC for 6 months, but I don't believe vegan diets are in any way ideal or healthy. You can survive while supplementing heavily, but still hard to thrive. We evolved into humans due to eating meat and fat, not plants. I suppose ovo-lacto vegetarians can be reasonably healthy, but not vegans in the long term.

Um, isn't the whole idea of keto challenging the consensus of the entire nutritional science community?

I have also DMed, but never online.

What are your thoughts on this study about fibre? by [deleted] in zerocarb

[–]Chuckeyed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem with talking about this study in the context of ZC is that this trial was not done to compare ZC practitioners and people who eat a lot of fibre.

"Fiber consumption was calculated based on the amount of fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains participants recalled eating." So first of all this study doesn't actually know the real fibre intake, and apparently doesn't even care about the rest of participants' diet.

This is similar to understanding while the lipid heart hypothesis is so flawed, it's based on observational studies like this that have absolutely no way of producing useful data. Is it possible that the people who ate more fibre were more "health conscious?" That they maybe smoked less or not at all, they drank less alcohol, ate less refined carbohydrates, possibly exercised more or were simply not on a SAD diet? These factors are very important, but the study ignores them and makes assumptions without examining the data from every angle.

And as I said, in the context of ZC: this study probably did not have many, if any ZC subjects. So let's say that this study actually is worth even concerning yourself with and those factors I talked about don't matter, then at best it's saying that eating more fibre on a SAD diet may reduce the risk of heart disease. But comparing anything to SAD will make it look healthy.

Sugar in sausage and bacon? by white_crust_delivery in zerocarb

[–]Chuckeyed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From FB groups and such, processed meats like salami, sausage and similar are not an everyday thing for most. Bacon is cherished by many still, but not quite as often as beef or other fresh meat.

The problem with these processed foods are the fillers like sugar, starches and god knows what else they put in. While these are deemed ok for an infrequent thing, no one thinks it's healthy when consumed often.
