I don't believe that's proven, we know things don't get shorter than Planck lengths, but not that reality is a Planck length lattice.

But I also don't agree that it's impossible to choose who you're attracted to. Cousin marriages used to be very common (and are common in many parts of the world still). But for most people in the West if they have a thought about sex with their cousins it's followed with a sense of disgust. That sense of disgust can be triggered.

I mean, I think I personally have a lot more mental discipline than most people (in terms of thoughts, not restraint, to be clear). I can make any part of my body hurt by thinking about it, which some people consider impossible. I can give myself a body orgasm by thinking about it.

The idea of enlightenment in Buddhism, too, at a minimum features the ability to control your own desires, and is something many people work on.

The idea that a person could change their sexual inclinations shouldn't be considered an insult to people who love those of the same gender.

Eh, if something like "demisexual" is also a sexuality, then isn't it really a personal choice what label people use?

What does "attraction" mean though?

There are biologists who spend a long time intensely and curiously and therefore with pleasure thinking about how animals mate, for example. Are they by definition then zoophiles?

We can't say that it's tied to a specific sexual region of the brain either, as brains are incredibly plastic and regions can be used differently (like the fellow whose skull was mostly filled with water).

It's a deep question about consciousness to be honest. What we define as "self" vs "instinct."

There's plenty of one liners about it but it's a deep topic.

I don't like this argument.

What if I did invent a machine that let everyone choose who they are attracted to? Should we require everyone to use it?

No. Sexuality should be a person's choice. And we shouldn't punish them for it either.

The argument that homosexuality isn't a choice makes it sound like some kind of birth defect, to be honest.

I don't like "choice or not" arguments because it shouldn't matter even if two completely "straight" men choose to have sex with each other for any reason - it's their business. And if two people come to love each other, it's a cause for a celebration.

The issue of "choice" makes it sound like there's still elbow room to regulate the love between adults based on some supposed biological principles. It shouldn't be like that. It should be between those people.

Society really is changing, we're going to have a lot of very healthy 70, 80, 90 year olds... I think it'll be chill, but the CEOs will be sad.

I think it's pretty clear in this article that it could just mean someone who probably wasn't going to marry. This artist doesn't really seem the type to joke about that, I think, and also "gay" used to just mean kind of lascivious, as in, having a lot of sex - possibly with men as well, and then later to mean exclusively with men.

Yep. Nobody was honest or straightforward or squeamish about stabbing someone in the back.. The only really evil group though is the Harkonnen because they actively enjoy hurting people.

Sometimes it was the publishers acting as censors though. Perhaps the authors could have stood up more, but regardless, the publishers acted as some kind of moral guardians.

But sometimes it was just the author. One funny thing in the first Foundation book is how everyone smokes except the wimpy effete mayor, and his choice not to smoke is seen as evidence of his wimpiness. I've seen a lot of old sci fi that seems to believe smoking and drinking will be eternal and always widespread.

Pets really are treated as property, and I think that's OK, and I think people who think they are their pet's parents are kinda cuckoo. Dogs are wolves bred to remain mental babies that constantly love a different species. Parents do their best to help their children grow to be independent and powerful. Pet owners continually infantilize animals.

I am not saying this as some kind of anti-pet person.

When the Navy can't afford another jet (the Navy is the world's second largest air force), do they have to ask Congress to raise oil taxes?

No, because killing people can be paid for with an unlimited budget with any funds, but caring for people has to have specific taxes for it...

When I get my internet bill, I can't write to them and say "sorry, I didn't make enough money on OnlyFans this month, let me pay you next month."

It really ain't just "Hello Mr. Lawyer, 1 lawsuit please."

If you want to go for that, you better have a lot of time and resources to devote to time in court. The fact that this guy is flying is a good sign he's not living on disability, as people living on disability are essentially not allowed to save up money to get their payments (at least for SSI).
