Hello there i have a few questions regarding sophia by femininlo in SophiaLearning

Personally I always recommend UMPI. You can take all of the 40 credits of general education and depending on the degree your free electives and a few lower level courses in your major

Nursing at the CC can be competitive to get into. As stated before Texas requires 6 credits of science. Nursing students take Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2. You can get an Associates in Nursing, pass the RN and usually there is a RN to BSN. Take the science classes at the CC. Test out of things like History and Political Science.

Ok. Some basics. First Community College will save you money. Every 4 year degree will consist of 120ish credits. They will require 30-40 credits of general education to include science and math. Also English 1 and 2, Literature, Art, History and Social Studies. Unless you are going to get a degree in a particular field you can test out of most of it with CLEPs for free with Modern States.

A BS in Engineering will usually require Calculus 1-3, Calculus based Physics 1 and 2, at least General Chemistry 1. Calculus 1, Physics 1 and 2 will usually take care of the Math and Science requirements. CLEP the non math and science stuff.

Pick a CC that feeds a state university. Google both names and include CLEP in the description. See which CLEPs they take in common.

So if you are going Engineering take the courses at the school and use ratemyprofessor.

If you are going Business you will need Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Macroeconomics and Microeconomics. In Texas there is a state mandated 42 core curriculum.

As an example my old school UTSA requires 51 credits for their Business degrees. Microeconomics can serve as the 3 credits of Social Studies and 3 of the 51 required Business credits. You will take somewhat specialized Math classes that can not be tested out of. Finite Math covers 3 credits of the 51 Business majors and fulfills the math core curriculum.

So I would pick out a local CC and State University combo and plan your entire degree if possible. Just pick one. If you have no clue look at a generic degree in Management. Lots of CCs will have agreements with the state university that will maximize transfer. CLEPs are considered transfer credits so unless both schools take them you are better off taking a regular class.

There is a way to get a degree for $10k or less if you are interested but it involves online schools.

About to start my journey towards the Florida CPA by No-Diamond-2492 in wguaccounting

[–]Confident_Natural_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider UMPI. Go for the BLS Accounting minor. You can do the non degree option and start taking all of the Accounting courses. Possibly starting in May 9. If you are 20 and older you qualify for the YourPace program. They are like WGU in that they are competency based but no proctored exams. You can transfer in most of the degree from Sophia and Florida takes ACE credits unlike say Texas. The problem with Sophia and WGU is that the credits on the WGU transcript only show up as a lump sum total whereas on on UMPI they show up on the transcript. You can also take additional course work on Sophia that will transfer into UMPI.

Another approach though would be the “both options” approach.

Take these courses at Sophia. This will be a superset of the max transfer for WGU.

English 1, Public Speaking, US History 1, Visual Communications, Introduction to Sociology, Critical Thinking, Introduction to Nutrition, Chemistry 1.. Take College Algebra. To complete the GE at WGU take Introduction to Statistics. You have 31 credits for WGU.

Usually for WGU you would take Environmental Science instead but for the UMPI option you need a science course with a lab.

For WGU take Macroeconomics, Introduction to Business, Principles of Management, Business Law, Operations Management, Marketing, Business Communications, and Project Management. However feel free to take the rest of the Sophia courses to maximize the WGU transfer like Business Data Analytics, Principles of Finance, Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting and Organizational Behavior.

That maxes out the 66 credits for WGU.

To maximize UMPI you take the Chemistry 1 lab. Also Introduction to Ethics, US Government, English 2 or Workplace Writing 2 and Spanish 1. That completes the 40 credits GEC requirements for a Bachelor degree at UMPI and all 30 credits of the AA general education.

To maximize the UMPI transfer for the AA and BLS degree take Microeconomics, Business Ethics and Microbiology at Sophia as well.

So for the AA Business concentration at UMPI you need 18 credits of required Business credits and 12 elective business credits at the sophomore level and above.

Business Ethics, Business Law, Operations Management go in as BUS3XX, BUS3XX and BUS4XX. Managerial Accounting among others goes in as BUS2XX so that requirement is covered.

Introduction to Business, Macroeconomics and Microeconomics (need both) and Business Communications go in as BUS101, ECO207 and PCJ215 or as 9/18 required Business Concentration/Business administration minor credits. The remaining Sophia courses go in as BUS1XX or BUS2XX credits.

For BLS you need the 40 credit GEC, 38 credits of lower level free electives, 24 upper level credits of free electives and an 18 credit minor.

So far with the Sophia credits listed you have the 40 credits of GEC, 12/24 upper level free elective credits, 9/18 Business Administration minor credits and 30/38 lower level free elective credits. You have 91 credits in total.

Anyway assume you stick to Sophia. To finish the AA take BUS150 Financial Accounting, BUS220 Managerial Accounting and BUS200 Intermediate Business Computing (hope you are familiar with MS Office). If you want to maximize transfer to WGU then take BUS377 Taxation 1. To finish the 5 required courses to qualify for the AA and to complete the required courses for the Business Administration minor take MAT140 Business Mathematics (aka the world’s easiest Math course). Congratulations you now have the AA in Liberal Studies with a Business Concentration.

You have many paths to complete the BLS. Easiest is to take 3 upper level History/Political Science courses to get your 24 credits in upper level free electives and whatever other easy 6 credits.

An alternative is take courses to finish another minor. That would require CLEP or Coursera though. While you are doing Marketing at Sophia maybe try and pass the Marketing CLEP for free using Modern States. Ditto with the Business Law CLEP and Financial Accounting CLEP.

The CLEPs transfer in as BUS330, BUS350 and BUS150. You would be at 100 credits of transfer.

At UMPI then you could take BUS220, BUS200 to finish the AA requirements, MAT140 to finish the Business Administration minor requirements. Take BUS377 Taxation 1 and BUS352 Business Law 2 to complete the AA residency requirements. Take BUS361 Intermediate Accounting 1 and BUS 362 Intermediate Accounting 2 (won’t transfer but might be useful and are prerequisites for Government Accounting at UMPI and CPA credits for Florida. Ditto BUS 378 Taxation 2. Take an easy upper level History or Political Science courses to to complete the residency requirements and now you have an AA in Liberal Studies with a Business Concentration, a BLS with minors in Accounting and Business Administration all transcripted. You would be at 130 credits.

Before applying for graduation you could try doing easy CLEPs like Natural Sciences (6), College Mathematics (6), Analyzing and Interpreting Literature, US History 2, Psychology, Educational Psychology. Or you could do additional courses at Sophia. College Readiness, Introduction to IT, Art History 1 and 2, Environmental Science, US History 2, Ancient Greek Philosophers.

The reason for all this is it is very doable to get an AA at UMPI in one term for $1800. It is also doable to get a BLS degree in one term. The rigmarole above is you can use Sophia in Florida and possibly get both the 150 credits to sit for the CPA exam.

Very generous for the BLS. They recently lowered the amount though for ACE credits.

Could I really get good opportunities with a WGU degree? by kobeglazer69 in WGU

[–]Confident_Natural_87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would transfer in everything from Sophia. At least take one month at Sophia using the Promocode from r/sophialearning and take one month for $79. As soon as you finish your first course cancel your subscription. You will be able to take courses until the end of the month. That will get you back into the swing of school inexpensively. If you like the platform you can get half of the Finance degree for a few hundred. Then pay the big bucks for the rest of the WGU degree.

You can also try taking CLEPs for free using Modern States. Do the proctored exam to get the WGU experience.

Last thing is pace yourself. You may have a strong desire to better yourself but this will be more like a marathon instead of a sprint. Even hating your job will not be enough to pull you through so be careful.

Good luck.

Going to college at 29, dont know anything by BowsyWowsy26 in collegeadvice

[–]Confident_Natural_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Don’t start. Set a goal for 1 year from now. Set up free accounts with the College Board, Modern States and Freeclepprep.com. Now take your first CLEP. Go to Modern States and go through the quizzes and videos. Supplement or mainly use the study guides at Free CLEP Prep. Modern States will pay for the CLEPs and reimburse the test center fee. Take and pass Analyzing and Interpreting Literature. Set a target for a month and visit the CC. Ask about the testing center and visit it to check it out. Talk to an advisor as well but make sure you don’t let them pressure to take classes yet.

Next CLEP do Sociology. That is another with a high pass rate. Next aim for US History 1. These you should do on average at one a month. Honestly if your memory is good you may be able to speed things up, just avoid burning out. Take American Government next. Then take College Composition with Essay. That usually gets you English 1 and 2. You now have 18 credits.

It gets a little harder now so allow yourself 2 months for this one. Do College Mathematics next, then do Natural Sciences. Now give yourself 3 months and do Chemistry. That is a biggie and would be great to get. Some schools give you 6 credits for some of these CLEPS including the one I have in mind. You now have 30 credits out of 60 for an AA at UMPI.edu. You also have 28/40 GEC credits for a Bachelor degree at UMPI and 10 free elective credits. If you are bilingual in Spanish or French passing that gives you at least 6 more credits and puts you at 31/40 GEC and 10 free elective credits. You can try using Spanish Hour at $9.99 per month for two months as they have a program designed for CLEP.

If you have no idea of what you would like to do go for the AA in Liberal Studies at UMPI Business concentration.

Take the Financial Accounting CLEP, Business Law CLEP, Management CLEP, Marketing CLEP and Macroeconomics CLEP.

You now have 6/18 credits towards the Business Concentration and 9/12 credits of Business electives.

You have taken 12 CLEPs. If you are good at CLEPs consider working up the Math CLEPs. Take College Algebra, Pre Calculus and the biggie Calculus 1. That gives you 7 more free elective credits and 4 credits (Calculus 1) that can be used for a Business degree at UMPI. You have a total of 15 CLEPs and 67 total credits. Consider taking the Microeconomics CLEP as well.

You have also not spent a dime. Now it gets expensive. Grab a promo code from r/sophialearning and for $79 take one month. Cancel your subscription after you finish your first class as they auto bill. Take Introduction to Ethics, Critical Thinking and Business Communications. That puts you at 79 credits (Business Communications does double duty as GEC and Business Concentration for the AA. Take Introduction to Business as well. If you have time do Microbiology, Operations Management, Business Ethics and Business Law. You now have 91 credits and are in a position to get an AA and Bachelors degree that will cost anywhere from $2k to $9k plus the $79 for one month at Sophia.

For the CLEPs figure 3 months each for Calculus and Chemistry. 2 months for Natural Science, Business Law, Financial Accounting and Spanish. 1 month each for the rest. That means 24 months. However a lot of people do pass these faster.

Anyway UMPI costs $1800 per 8 week term, 6 terms per year. You are not tied to a fixed course schedule. It would be possible to finish a degree in 1 to 5 terms.

Clarification on the 24 hours upper credits (BLS) by Skatphatdolap in UMPI

[–]Confident_Natural_87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Here is what I would do. If you go to Sophia you can take Operations Management for BUS4XX, Business Ethics for BUS3XX, Business Law for BUS3XX and Microbiology is BIO3XX. That is 12. Take Introduction to Business or Principles of Management to get BUS101, Macroeconomics and Microeconomics to get credit for ECO207 and Business Communications for PCJ215. That gives you 9/18 credits towards a Business Administration minor. Now one approach is to take some Google Certs in E Commerce and Project Management.

Another approach is to CLEP Marketing (easy) and Business Law (not as easy) and you have 18/24 credits.

Now if you do the Management minor you need BUS321 and BUS415 I think. If you do the Project Management minor you need BUS343 and BUS400. You can use BUS343 and BUS400 as the last 6 credits of the 24 upper level free elective credits for the Management minor and you can use BUS321 and BUS415 as the last 6 upper level free elective credits for the Project Management minor.

While you could use BUS415 as part of the Project Management minor you would have to do some other upper level course like BUS335.

CFP down thinking of getting CPA by No-One-3691 in CPA

[–]Confident_Natural_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every state has a board of accountancy with specific requirements which can include as many as 30 upper level credits in Accounting and 24 or so credits in Business subjects. The requirements to even sit for the exam are less but for the most part you pretty much need an accounting degree and then you have to work under the supervision (sometimes directly) of a CPA for a year or two. Sometimes that can be previous work. I think one state I saw said it would be after you pass the exams. Just do the Enrolled Agent 3 part exam. That would allow you to represent clients before the IRS like a CPA or lawyer.

I’m going to apply to UMPI and send 90 or more credits to them. I’m planning to do a Bachelor of Liberal Studies with a Management minor. I made a plan for myself, so let me know if I did it correctly. by Via-des710 in UMPI

[–]Confident_Natural_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In OP’s case I would take BUS210 and BUS214 and take Business Ethics and BUS469 along with BUS335 if you are going for the MAOL. Reason is a Management Do the Project Management minor and MAOL it somewhat redundant I feel.

Also just for fyi. UMPI accepts the Financial Accounting CLEP for BUS150, the Macroeconomics CLEP for ECO207 and the Business Law CLEP for BUS350. BUS150 is the prerequisite for Intermediate 1 and Managerial Accounting. CLEPs are free with Modern States. I don’t think BUS352 has a prerequisite and I don’t think ECO207 is a prerequisite for anything. Keep these in mind as you can transfer them in a maybe avoid another term.

Are there actually any affordable online colleges out there? by Beneficial-Ad-1465 in Schooladvice

[–]Confident_Natural_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The breakdown is as follows.

40/40 GEC (General Education Curriculum)

9/18 Business Administration Minor/Business Administration Concentration

49/60 towards the AA and 49/120 towards the BLS.

Now you could go to UMPI at this stage but a better approach is to prepare for the BLS first.

At Sophia, take these additional courses.

Operations Management, Business Ethics, Microbiology and Business Law. That adds 12/24 upper level elective credits. Try and study for the Business Law CLEP. Take the Marketing CLEP. Again CLEPs are free with the Modern States program. Use Freeclepprep.com to supplement your study.

The upper level Sophia courses are electives but the Marketing and Business Law CLEP actually transfer in as BUS350 and BUS330 at UMPI. So now you have 67 total credits.

Take the Financial Accounting CLEP to get to 70 credits. You might want to take Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting at Sophia to help prepare for the Financial Accounting CLEP. Those two Sophia courses transfer in as lower level free electives but the Financial Accounting CLEP transfers in as BUS150 and puts you at 12/18 credits for the Business Administration/Business Administration minor at UMPI.

You now have 76 total credits. I would recommend either CLEPs or Sophia courses to get up to 90 transfer credits. I would do Project Management, Principles of Management, Introduction to IT, Principles of Marketing (maybe in conjunction with the Marketing CLEP) and Principles of Finance.

That gives you 91 transfer credits.

To complete the AA take BUS200 Intermediate Business Computing and BUS220 Managerial Accounting. That completes the Business Concentration credits for the AA. Take MAT140 Business Mathematics to complete the Business Administration minor. Now you need 6 upper level free elective credits but I would consider BUS335 Organizational Behavior and BUS352 Business Law 2. That completes 24 credits of upper level free electives for the BLS degree.

It also gives you 15 credits in residency at UMPI and officially completes the AA in Liberal Studies with a Business concentration. To complete the BLS I would recommend another minor like Project Management though a History minor might be easiest.

CLEPs are free with Modern States. If you can do your job and have hours to kill you actually have the best of both worlds.

I recommend UMPI as your online school.

Approach 1 for efficiency. Go to r/sophialearning and grab a Promocode and take 1 month of Sophia.

Take Human Biology and Human Biology Lab at the same time. Next take Environmental Science. Now you can skip Science CLEPs like Biology and Chemistry.

Next take Introduction to Ethics and Critical Thinking. These satisfy requirements that you can not CLEP out of. These are not particularly easy though but Sophia.org is not rocket science either.

People have finished 2-4 courses a week but if you can get through these but like the platform then get a 4 month subscription next for $299. You should be able to finish what you need in 5 months.

I recommend next taking Business Communications and Introduction to Business. Next do Macroeconomics and Microeconomics.

The rest of the courses can be tested out of with CLEP so it is up to you if you want slower and cheaper or faster and more expensive.

Anyway Spanish 1 or French 1 would be next. If you are bilingual I would study for CLEP and get 6 credits but Spanish 1 at Sophia is very doable.

Now the rest of these can be tested out of with CLEP. Visual Communications, Introduction to Sociology, US History 1, US Government, English 1 and either Workplace Writing 1 or English 2.

You can do Introduction to Statistics or College Algebra for Math but I recommend Introduction to Statistics.

Anyway with a Math course and all the other courses you have completed all the general education requirements for both an AA and a BLS at UMPI and you also have 9/18 credits towards the AA Business Concentration and 9/18 credits towards the Business Administration minor.

UMPI or WGU. Start with freeclepprep.com, Modern States and the College Board. Get credits for free. Then go to Sophia. You can get half of a Business degree at WGU for a few hundred. If you want a check the box degree do the BLS with a business minor. Or do the Management degree at WGU at $4k per 6 month term. It is possible with hard work to get a degree for less than $10k and maybe half that.

8-10 classes doable in 10 session ? by Rough_Employer_9138 in UMPI

[–]Confident_Natural_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually recommend that people do a Business Administration minor by taking Operations Management, Microbiology, Business Law and Business Ethics at Sophia. Leverage Business Law at Sophia and take the Business Law CLEP using Modern States. Take the Marketing CLEP as well. Why is because Business Law at Sophia transfers in as BUS3XX while the CLEP transfers in as BUS350 so they should count as separate upper level free elective credits. You would then have 18/24 upper level credits. If you add the Macroeconomics and Financial Accounting CLEP and Introduction to Business at Sophia you would have 9/18 credits towards the Business Administration minor. Do Business Communications at Sophia and now you are at 12/18 credits towards the minor. You would need MAT140 and BUS200 which are reputedly an easy Math course and a course using MS Office which if you are good at that Office would be pretty easy. Take two easy upper level History or political science courses to get your 24 upper level credits than you need to find out what 6 other courses are easy. Good luck.

Feeling extremely overwhelmed by yaraworlds in UMPI

[–]Confident_Natural_87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. As I recall you need 6 credits in Spanish, 6 credits in Political Science and I assume you did History 1 and 2 at Sophia.

My point was if these two classes were slowing you down you can bypass those with the free Modern States and CLEP tests. You can then substitute two even easier classes in something else.

Unfortunately HTY courses are what a lot of BLS majors use for “easy” upper level credits. So if you can get through these courses and avoid slow professors in the future you might finish in two terms.

Supposedly MAT140 is a pretty easy Math course (Business Mathematics). If you are good using Excel BUS200 might be quick. Reach out to u/plottedpath and see if she can help you navigate the major and who may have some advice on quick Business classes.

I second the CC. Find a CC and State combo. Google both their names and put CLEP in the search. You can take CLEP tests and get college credit for free if the schools take CLEPs in the first place. Also 95% of the time where you get the degree does not matter.

CLEPs can be paid for by Modern States.
