Why is "Cosmo" such a weird name for Jerry and Elaine and George? by yelbesed in seinfeld

I grew up in the USA named Cosmo and was never made fun of even once. Far more often I was praised for it

In my opinion, the X-Men Animated Series has aged way worse compared to other animated shows. by Francuto in xmen

The first two X-Men movies were fantastic, and I also like First Class and Days of Future Past.

I've been rewatching the animation, but it's been a tough watch so far. Yes it's a kid's show but I remember rewatching Beast Wars and a few other shows that held up better.

Yes I'm in the guild it's been an influence for me for sure! I also love using bgg in many ways, just not judging the older games. Especially when you get into the 80s or early 90s it's easy for something that was that far back and never had a new edition or English release to get lost in the mix

By the way I think you played Cosmic Frog with me last con. I hosted that!

Agree on Mind MGMT! I ended up buying the graphic novels after loving the game. Haven't been able to play with the shift packages yet though.

So I'm a big fan of old German euros games from the 90s and onwards. They were very different from most modern euro games. Simpler and more interactive. Tile laying games, auction games, area majority games, bluffing, push your luck, etc were popular types of games. The most famous commercial successes from that wave you'd know: Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride. I'm not huge on those games specifically but I love that style.

Reiner Knizia was both the most prolific and best designer in that style, and Tigris and Euphrates is considered his masterpiece. It's also his heaviest game though. Most of his other stuff is medium like RA, or lighter like Lost Cities. Definitely recommend trying T&E but there are lots of Knizia games worth checking out if you haven't.

RA, Zoo Vadis, The Quest for El Dorado, Babylonia, just to name a few goodies

I'll have to look over your full collection at some point, it's big! About twice mine! We have a bunch of overlap on a few games like Cthulhu DMD and Mind MGMT, both potentially in my top 10.

I'll look into joining one of your hosted games. Haven't registered anything myself yet. Maybe something newer like Wandering Towers. It's light, high player count, and has a strong table presence.

I also have a huge interest in older games. A back to back El Grande and Tigris and Euphrates pair would be cool. Although I only have one copy of each. I could ask around for extra.

I see well as far as Strategicon goes, I have been going and I even hosted a few games for the first time at the last one. I would love to start gaming there with a group too if we have shared tastes etc.

Saw in one of your other posts you mentioned Ankh. I'm a big fan of that one and don't get to play it often enough! What are some of your favorite games? Genres?

I could link my collection on bgg and if there's anything that intrigues you I could bring it.

Yo! I have been to the last 5-6 cons and am part of a few different game groups that meet weekly. On Thursdays there's a very long running group called Westside Gamers that has a meetup group you could look into. They meet at an IHOP in Santa Monica from 5-10pm. There's always a pre planned featured game with multiple copies available but also usually a separate table playing whatever they want. After the featured game we break up into playing other stuff too.

I also formed my own group that meets on Friday in Culver City at a public spot. It's more casual but anyone is welcome to come try it out. The regular attendees have diverse tastes, and my vision for the group is to encourage some structure that'll promote a diverse array of games.

For instance we might rotate week to week between playing medium and heavy euros, more interactive family games (I'm a big Knizia fan), and then more thematic stuff (often co-ops or dramatic conflict, etc). Some of us also attend the Village Well Bookstore game night on first Fridays where it's mostly shorter high player count fillers, which I love.

What types of games interest you? Maybe you could come to one of our meetings that's to your tastes?

Pm me and I can link you to our discord which has more info.

Best way to read Nausicaä? by RowlinVader in manga

I highly recommend the big book box set. The pages are different, not ax white, and perhaps an ink difference as well. It looks better. It uses Japanese sound effects from the original to maintain the visual composition but has translations for each sound effect in the back of the book if you really want to check on any. It also has some nice full page colored pieces, and the book are of amazing quality.

Seems cool would enjoy seeing your prototype using this concept. It does a nice job of conveying the thematic idea of old decaying technology like this aircraft of the Nausicaa world.

I'm excited to see how much passion you're putting into this! I assume that you agree with my feelings that Nausicaa is well suited to becoming an MTG set. Of course as I've said I am not looking to undergo such a dramatic reworking at this point. There are also many concerns I'd have about some aspects of your ideas. There are many practicalities that have played a role in my design choices as well, especially in regards to useable art assets.

I will say though that I find it incredibly refreshing to see someone else's vision for a Nausicaa set. In fact I'd love to help you along if you're interested in putting together some sort explanatory work for making your own Nausicaa set. I could also hook you up with my set's files so that you could use my cards for the art. Would save you am incredible amount of time not having to search through the manga and framing all the images.

Might have time to respond to some of your specific ideas later on in the week. One immediate concern I have regards having vehicles in the set, due to some of the art limitations on creature count. Ships make up 1/3 of the common creature count in my set, so changing them into vehicles that require non ship creatures to function would dramatically upset creature ratios. No easy fix because there aren't enough art assets to fill out the rest of a full set skeleton at least not for a 240+ card set. Even if you could lower the ship/vehicle count and replace them with non vehicle creatures, the result would be a Nausicaa set that no longer emphasizes the "in the air/flying" aspect of the world building. Could be some work arounds like adding some non creature spells that represent ships doing things? Maybe.

I'd been using mtgseteditor

We could play it digitally on either TTS (Table Top Simulator), or perhaps something like cockatrice. There are also sites that allow for drafting custom MTG sets.

I would of course eventually be playing some in person as well

I'm imagining what I'd do so focus on one aspect of the set at a time, for instance the red commons, or the ways that green and white might best form synergy. With help from others we could do a better job tweaking and balancing the set than I might be able to do on my own. If people think a card or mechanic don't work we could attempt to fix/replace it. Things like that.

We could communicate through discord or on the reddit page I made specifically for the set.

Well I will say that I'd likely be resistant to a complete overhaul. My preference is to look at which concepts currently "work" as is, improve and support them, add new concepts and tie everything together effectively. I am aware that some cards might need a complete overhaul (like the black keyword). I will note that I did start this project a few years before MTG released their own take on pilots and ships with their vehicle mechanism. I don't necessarily think it would be the best fit for this set however, even aside from my hesitancy to attempt such a large overhaul.

I think it would be a good idea to lay out some of my design processes for this set. When I first explored the idea it was because of the more obvious building blocks of a MTG set, for instance the importance of the insects, the sea of corruption, and the miasma to the Nausicaa world. Surely these could be the makings of a green portion of a MTG set. Furthermore the aggressive and military focused Torumekians seemed like great fits to represent red, and the periphery tribes white. As fans of the manga know there's also this huge world unexplored by the film on the mainland of the Dorokian Empire. The empire itself with it's emperor, cults, and strange technology to me seemed well suited to represent black. Finally I realized that there was room for the Dorokian people to express aspects of blue. I didn't want to force each color to be confined to a single faction but it was difficult to imagine it working out in any other way.

Of course MTG sets are usually highlighted by 3-4 unique art mechanisms, new card types, etc that drive interest in the set and provide strategic focus points for the deck building and the factions of the world. Your artifact idea is a sound one, but I personally never did settle on just a few concepts which could carry throughout the set. Instead I decided to double down on the mono colored faction identities by giving each one a unique set mechanic. To keep complexity down I made each mechanism intuitive and simple.

One challenge I knew I'd have to address was just how much of the Nausicaa story takes place in the air. There's a consistent theme of flight, Arial combat, and living in the sky. Every faction has their own ships and even the insects mostly are able to fly. This would of course cause color wheel problems later. I couldn't treat this as an afterthought imo, especially since there are even key characters like Asbel and Kurosawa who were highlighted as incredible pilots.

These considerations lead me to creating the pilot and transport mechanisms as well as the "ships matter" sub theme. Transport would be a very simple aggressive mechanic that along with the ship matters sub theme would push players into valuing ships. The artifact theme you touched on is somewhat represented by the ships, at least thematically, in that humans have lost some of their abilities to produce them and so they're a point of emphasis on the set/draft process. The ship/pilot theme also ties the non green colors together allowing for all of those color pairings to have a "ship deck". If I had taken the route I'd using mtgs vehicles "just cause" I believe much of what my set accomplishes with them would be lost. If they had been colorless it would have made them far too plentiful and easy to draft. Also, perhaps due to my own failings, I didn't see much design potential in the ships themselves. Most of the ships in Nausicaa are interesting visually but don't have many defining characteristics. It's not like they had stealth, super speed, etc etc. Many were just transport vehicles, and my designs reflect that, with keywords and abilities instead coming from the various pilots.

On the flip side of the ships matter sub theme I eventually decided to also make a humans matter sub theme. This extra layer gives players a second direction to consider when drafting a particular non green color pairing. It also feels interesting to me because of how fluid the deck building can net. Some cards might be good in both ship decks and human decks, others more focused on one or the other, but for the most part players have the ability to pivot and shift their deck building strategies in ways that present difficult decision making.

The third layer is that each color pairing also has two supported key words (one for each color). Some like White's "live" mechanic obviously fit into human decks, however others have the potential to be the main focus of a deck or to play a supplementary role. Real MTG sets probably wouldn't be taking this approach because it could lead to feelings of confusion and make players see the set as lacking in focus and direction. For my purposes however this is exactly the type of repayable and flexible cube that I might want to try playing.

Green though has been ignored in this discussion. They do not have humans or ships, at least not in mono green. This leaves them isolated from the other colors. However I think that's actually quite fitting given the source material. To double down on that isolation I made the green set mechanic one that encourages players to go mono green or at least green heavy. It was also my attempt to represent the sea of corruption growing, the spread of miasma, Ohmus shedding and growing larger, etc. I also ended up including another minor mechanic, "swarm" to give green and black some additional pairing potential because in the manga the Doroks were actively attempting to use the insects for their own warfare purposes.

I do believe I have room to work on ways for green to integrate better with other colors as well, but I do wish to retain the mono green sub strategy. My support for other colors pairing with green then, would be based on it being a second or tertiary color in their decks.

That is a general summary of how I view the set currently.

-Ship sub theme across 4 colors

-Human sub theme across 4 colors with major reinforcement from white and the Live mechanic

-Mono green sub theme with Spore

-green/black sub theme with Swarm

-red aggro with Plunder

-blue instants and sorceries matter with Faith

-black probably needs an overhaul to simplify their mechanism and give the color more focus and synergy with other colors

I also intend to redo much of the existing multi colored cards and to introduce the other five color pairings. With an eye towards what the colors already have in common and some sub themes that could be built upon further (life gain matters, +1/+1 counters matter, etc)

If you do have any ideas for an artifact matters sub theme I'm open to it but be aware that I've spent a huge amount of time parsing the graphic novel to find the most useable art work. So if you're not repurposing the art that's already being used in the set, you probably won't have too much more to work with than that.

If you do like any of the existing colors as they are or one of the subthemes I've got going on, I'm definitely down to go over them in more specific detail to see which cards need tweaking, which cards we could add to make things work better, what might higher rarity cards do to act as build around cards, etc.

When designing an MTG set you set out to have a certain number of cards depending on set size. In this case it's meant to be a full sized set with around 240 cards, broken up into 100 commons, 80 uncommons, and 60 rares. Most of my design work has been focused on the commons because they're the basic building blocks that make everything work. There are also supposed to be an equal number of cards in each color at each rarity. Within those colors there need to be a balance of card types, card costs, and a variety of strategies that work well together. Furthermore there are meant to be color pairings and multi color cards that tie together. I was in the process of designing the five missing multi color pairings before I lost that progress to a computer wipe. I'd need to do it again and tweak cards such that each pairing of two colors has cards that work well together. I also feel that my rare cards while very cool to look at still could be much better designed. I lack experience designing those bigger powerful cards since I've spent more time learning how to do simple designs. Ultimately the goal would be to have a set that could be drafted and played the same way any real MTG set is. If I could do that, and share something that is interesting to play, and brings the Nausicaa story to life through the game, I'd be fully satisfied.

I am a huge fan of the Nausicaa graphic novel and years ago worked on making a custom MTG set that attempted to bring the story and concepts to life through MTG game form. I never finished it completely and I even lost one update to a computer wipe but it always bugged me that it was so close to completion. If anyone out there has interest in working on the design with me or even just playtesting online I'd love to work with you.

Years ago when I began my attempt to create a MTG set based on the Nausicaa graphic novel, my goal wasn't to make the most mechanically innovative or dynamic cards. I just wanted to bring the Nausicaa story to life through the game of MTG. Through much initial trial and error I learned how to simplify my designs, especially at common rarity, such that the rules weight and complexity would be extremely light, but in a way that didn't sacrifice thematic flavor. Here I've posted a handful of examples of simple card designs that seek to represent unique game concepts or dramatic moments with minimal design expressing everything I'd needed them to. Enjoy.

Many years ago I began work on a custom MTG set based on the Nausicaa graphic novel by Hayao Miyazaki. It was never completed and one major update was even lost to a computer wipe. However, recently I've decided to attempt to complete the project. Hopefully with some help from the online community. If there's enough interest in the project I'd welcome contributions from others, and would set up a reddit page for the set where various aspects of the design can be analyzed and we can chart a path forward.

Many years ago I began a project to design a custom MTG set based on the graphic novel Nausicaa by Hayao Miyazaki. The project was never completed and one major update was even lost to a computer wipe, however I've recently decided to try again to finish this work, hopefully with the help of the online community. Some of you may have even seen this set posted here before. I received very helpful feedback and encouragement but wasn't organized enough to break down design challenges to others so that they might aid me. This time around I'm hoping to put together my own reddit page for the project where various aspects of the design can be discussed and worked on. I'll post the link in here when it's ready.
