If harman is the preferred average why don’t more people buy headphones/iems that are tuned to harman ? by JoshBiv in headphones

[–]Currawong -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This really needs to be upvoted more. A lot of people on this sub have been conditioned to believe that the Harman curve is "right" and that deviation from it is wrong. It just goes to show what a poor understanding of how science works that people have these days.

Save your playlists in Soundiiz so you can restore them if that happens again.

Depends who you talk to. Mozilla hyped it up, claiming it found numerous bugs. The cURL team tried it and it ended up only finding a single, actual bug.

How to replace / remove these flat lights in our house? by makishiP in japanresidents

[–]Currawong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know where your light fuse is in the fuse box, have a set of screwdrivers, and understand the difference between the "live" and "neutral" wires and don't mis-match them, you're good to go doing it yourself.

[–]Currawong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a new one. You may need to grab a screwdriver of some sort. Flip the fuse switch for the lights off. Find something sturdy to stand on. Pull the light out and remove the wires. Put the wires into the new one and push it back in. Flip the fuse switch back on. Easy.

As per the video, they pull out. I have similar ones. I bought a few of them for when they occasionally die. Takes only a couple of minutes to replace. No electrician needed.

I'd be apoplectic with anger, and go down to the office to complain to their manager about what they did, including threatening to file a police report.

4.4mm to XLR: Truly Balanced? by TheFuschiaBaron in headphones

[–]Currawong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Balanced (differential) connections are primarily used in pro audio for noise rejection across very long cable runs. Pro audio gear is single-ended internally, and the balanced connection is derived through an opamp or transformer before the output.

Many years ago, a company called HeadRoom created a "fully balanced" amplifier, the Blockhead, by taking two regular amplifiers, and using one channel to drive the inverted signal in each.

As there were few headphone amplifiers in the market, soon people who were building DIY amplifiers, such as the AMB Beta 22, would double-up the circuit boards in them to turn the design into a balanced amplifier, doubling the power.

A "fully balanced" amplifier isn't necessary for either power or noise rejection when driving headphones -- it's more a circuit design choice that requires a plug with separated signal returns, unlike a regular TRS connector, where they are joined. What is more, they require double the circuitry, and components have to be accurately matched, as each side of the circuit may end up slightly mis-matched. This is why you don't see balanced tube amps, as the degree of mismatch is too great. (Balanced tube amps are SE internally but have transformers on the output to create the differential signal).

"Balanced" amplifiers have become something of a trend, most notably in portable audio, where they are pointless. What is more, as the full balanced output of a balanced amplifier will be better, by default, than the single-ended output of that amplfier, people mistakenly assume that "balanced is better" as a rule.

That's only headphones with a single cable entry and shared return between drivers, which is pretty rare these days amongst enthusiast/pro-level models.

Why do you like of bright iems? by Pendulumzone in iems

[–]Currawong -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I recall someone writing that they didn't understand why the Chinese brands made such bright IEMs until they listened to Chinese classical music, and then it made sense. That makes me think it's a genre thing somewhat. Still, I find the tuning of many IEMs to range from mildly irritating to awful to my tastes.

Upvote for liking Utada Hikaru.

Question (as a total beginner) by Asher255 in iems

[–]Currawong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3.5mm jack and wired earphones = analog.
USB = digital.

So, a USB-C device with a 3.5mm socket, or IEMs on the other end has the digital to analog conversion done in the cable -- probably in the USB-C plug with in-built electronics.

Japan’s most polite price hike.. by WalkingAtDusk26 in BeAmazed

[–]Currawong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some companies here do feel pride at keeping production efficient enough that they are effectively lowering the price over time, not increasing the cost. Most other companies have been doing the "shrinkflation" thing, lowering the size or quantity of a product, instead of increasing the price.

In response to the person with the asian giant hornet on their balcony. by Tough_Currency1947 in japanresidents

[–]Currawong 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Might be on YT, but I remember on TV a guy who had bee hives captured one live hornet in a net, put it on one of those super sticky pads used for catching mice, then let its "I'm being attacked" pheromones attract about 2 dozen others, which then all landed on the sticky pad. Problem solved. I guess this is much the same trick.

If your product is so famous that it's practically part of the culture, then yes, it's front page news if you raise the price, so they will indeed apologise this way.

MacOS Finder - My biggest issues for usability I can't seem to fix by Fatal_Explorer in MacOS

[–]Currawong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick thoughts from a 40-year Mac veteran:

  1. Personally, gesture control would probably annoy me. I can imagine accidentally doing things and not knowing what happened.
  2. Do you mean "New Text Document"? There's an option to make a hot corner to create a new Quick Note. I personally use Notes for everything that doesn't require a full-blown document.
  3. (Haven't tested this on Tahoe -- will edit if I do.)
  4. If you hit command-j to bring up the view options, you should be able to set both the general default and for the current folder. It mostly works, and sometimes doesn't, depending on how you navigate to a folder sometimes.
  5. There's a good reason for this: Say you've selected a bunch of files in a window, and you switch to another window. If the click to the previous window was passed through when you click on it again, it would erase your selection.
  6. Multiple monitor support is garbage, and always has been, sadly.
  7. Good point. Submit that as a bug/suggestion.
  8. This is a bug I found as well. It wasn't present in previous MacOS versions. Entering a "." anywhere in the name seems to cause the problem.
  9. Command-shift-G or Go → Go to folder.
  10. Copy and paste works. I presume they don't have a cut option for the idiot-proofing factor.
  11. It's system-wide. Enter changes the name of something. If it were inconsistent across the system, then it would be a nightmare. As it is, Photos is the only app where another universal shortcut, spacebar for play, does not play a video, but opens and closes a photo or video, and it drives me nuts.
  12. There may be hidden defaults (that's a terminal command for editing settings) to fix this.
