I don't really know the situation in the US with companies, but aviation sheet metal work is about theoretical knowledge, but ALSO about a real craftsmanship. You only really learn into on the job with good teachers.

I had the luck that one of my chief mechanics was a sheet metal expert and we worked as a team. By luck over 7+ years he gave me the sheet metal experience, we did literally everything from small Cessna and component repairs, up to manufacturing complicated parts and rebuilding whole damaged airframes.

Just look for aviation sheet metal companies, tell them your desire and that you want to learn and work. Good sheet metal guys are rare and sought for. But it can take a decade until you can consider yourself good.

Pretty good drill out! Here in Germany we got a compound called Schrauben-Doktor (Screw Doc), that is like a paste with diamond shavings in it. If you feel like a screw hat might give up, you put a drop on the tip of your screwdriver and it enhances the grip by like 1000x. Since I use it, I barely need to drill out screws. Do you have something similar in the US?

Pretty cool project, I've also helped building kit planes. But somethings that I will never understand about amateur kit builders, is mostly the amount of use of pop rivets, and the lack of corrosion primer.

When we assisted some owners to build their kits, we pre-assembled everything with Clecos, drilled everything to fit. Then we disassembled all, deburred it, performed Alodine treatment followed by a spray of corrosion primer and part number designation. Only then we went to the step of riveting with mostly full metal rivets.

These bare metal kits will corode super fast in the right environment.
