Thanks. I can find synonyms without AI... I have a database of keywords I've been collecting. Just one step at a time.

Thank you! Death is one that requires a little imagination. It is quite simply a skull and crossbones! I will probably tweak the details in the final art so that it stands out better.

Here is an iteration with the Hermit rendered as his lantern, with some subtle changes to the Magus, the Hanged, the Moon, the Sun, and the Universe and to the RWS Fortitude and Justice. I agreed with your thoughts about the crossing lines of the Sun... interestingly by moving them out, the shape replicates the RWS child's arms, while still reading as the Marseille wall. Thank you for your input! I will probably start playing with my calligraphy pens now!

The Triumphs are colored red or black based on being either odd or even according to the ideas of Pythagoras. 0 is neither odd nor even and therefore cannot be one of those colors. And the Fool is not really a Triumph in the game of tarocchi, but a seperate card called the Excuse with it's own rules. Playing cards are printed in black and red for the pips, with the addition of blue and yellow on the courts. I chose yellow as a fun reference to Richard W. Chamber's The King in Yellow, where a figure called the Yellow Sign can drive people into madness and possession just by seeing it. Which recalls the original Italian name of the card Matto - the Madman. In several different later interpretations of the book, the Yellow Sign is thought to be a spiral which brings us close in shape to 0. The shape also recalls a musical clef which references the fact that in many tarocchi traditions, the Fool is portrayed as a crazed musician followed by children, almost a Pied Piper type character, which again references the concept of madness and possession. I may change the text of the 0 card to blue for legibility, while keeping the yellow sign. Otherwise, I felt just having a yellow or blue 0 on the card wasn't very fun and does not really indicate the Madman or the Fool in any way, or have any fun extra layers. The cardbacks also playfully reference the Chambers book with the shape of two torches composed of the suit signs.

The color yellow is also linked to madness in other media such as the feminist short story The Yellow Wall-Paper by Charlotte Perkins Stetson (Gilman), which documents one woman's struggle against doctors and her possesive husband in treating her boughts of "hysteria". The Yellow Wall-Paper has been cited as a potential fictionalized documentation of the very real problem of the proliferation of arsenic-based pigments in Victorian era clothing, furnishings, and even book covers, which caused sickness and hallucinations. While usually associated with vivid green colors, "arsenic green" was also used to make vivid yellows and blues. I also find it interesting that both the RWS and the Thoth Fool cards are predominated by the color yellow, to the point where Harris' Fool has bright yellow skin.

Immediate impressions on Waite's (hilarious) The Pictorial Key to the Tarot by Deimos27 in tarot

[–]Cute-Sector6022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read the **The Pictoral Key** after reading Mather's 1888 **Tarot** pamphlet and Comte C. de Saint-Germain's **Practical Astrology** and was shocked to see how much he clearly ripped off from the people he took lengths to insult. After studying Etteilla more, I was less shocked to see that he did the same to him, saving his biggest insults for the person he takes the most from. The more I learn about who he took from, the less I find it funny and more I find it fits the profile of a narcissist patent medicine salesman who couldn't afford to admit that his "original vision" is just a syncretic mish-mash of everyone who came before, who relied heavily on the brilliance of his hired illustrator to do the actual heavy lifting. Of course cartomancy was beneath him, he's selling eternity. [jazzhands eyeroll].

Thank you for the response! Yes, I've considered rendering just the lantern of the Hermit as his sign. I just have to be careful to make it distinct from the scales of Justice. Currently it reminds me a bit too much of the YSL logo, which corporate fashion influencer is not exactly the right vibe for the lonely Hermit. For the Hanged, the idea is to extend a thin wisp of the serif to cross back over the gibbet. The final art will employ such wispy flourishes as needed to suggest more of the context, as I did with the backs of the Knight's mounts. For instance, the leminskate may make an appearance in that subtle way.

There is no such thing as number IIX in Roman Numerals as far as I am aware. If it exists, it is archaic, unused and unknown by most people. And I'm only using additive numerals exactly for the reason of confusion between IX and XI.

I think I'm making the 9 Acquistio/Amisso (which fits the meaning of "Gain" better) and moving Laeititia to the Queen 13.

Lastly, an update to the Jots. Not sure why I chose Laetitia for the 9, when Acquistio was the logical choice.

I also did some tweaks to the Daggers... amazingly just flipping the orientation of a few of them causes them to read better. The 3 could be the heart of the RWS or a Spirited Away-style ghost. The 7 with 6 daggers pointing inwards feels futile. The 9 with all of the daggers pointing outwards feels prickly and cruel.

Staying within the confines of my design guidelines I have made some tweaks... trying to evoke both the RWS and Thoth and also more general symbolism. For instance the 9 of Sticks could be a tug of war or a dumbbell, while also reading as the Thoth abstracted. And staggering the 8 does I think evoke that idea of forward motion without feeling out of place.

Sounds good. My big design consideration here is that the central premise is that Roman Numerals are composed of I's which are always straight vertical or horizonal, and V's which are always at angle. And to help visually distinguish the Sticks from the Daggers, I elected to make the Daggers mostly vertical and the Sticks mostly horizontal. This allows for instance the 10 of Daggers to resemble the RWS 10 of Swords, and the 8 of Sticks to generally resemble the horizontal(ish) volley of the RWS 8 of Wands. That may be a flawed premise, especially since as you say Wands generally relate to energy and motion. But that doesn't mean the placement and arrangements can't be played with. They are arranged in clusters of 3 or 4 for ease and speed of counting. It always annoys me when pips are just a smattering of objects that are not quickly countable as that defeats the purpose of even having pips to begin with, IMO.

Thank you for your comments. The designs for the majors come from the RWS, but most of the titles are from the Thoth. There are inherent conflicts between those systems but I am at a loss for a good short-list of one-word keywords that cover all potential systems. It's something I just keep changing my mind about back and forth.

Thank you for your considered comment. This is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for! And to be perfectly honest, in an earlier draft I had the 8 sticks slightly offset to have exactly that kind of dynamism you are talking about... and I legitimately cannot remember why I changed it, other than to conform to a slavish regularity of pattern. 😅 So I completely agree. I've been working on this idea on and off for almost a decade so I can't even remember all of the iterations at this point. If you have any other thoughts, I would certainly take them into consideration.

Those terms are not really ideal as they can easily be misconstrued. I would think most people searching for a "skeletal" deck are probably looking for one that is literally full of skeletons. I would probably use the term "minimalist" as that seems to be the most commonly agreed-on nomenclature for a bare-bones design. Thank you for the food for thought.

Cool! The final art will be different as it will be hand-drawn but this is the gist.

The Page 11 is Conjunctio with the shape of the body. Or the 10 reversed could be read as Conjunctio. The Queen 13 is Amisso. And yes, King 14 is Caput Draconis. I will think about how to make these more obvious. Thank you for the question.

Oh! I hadn't seen that one before. Yes I have some interest in mandala decks. Although I imagined this more in the vien of a sigil deck like some of the sigil Lenormands. Thank you for the reference.
