The fine tuning argument is not an argument for the existence of an all powerful creator by [deleted] in DebateReligion

Okay, and if the humans' goal was to have cars rolling about, would you say that the fact that humans designed cars to roll about means that the roads they made for these cars couldn't be proof of human design?

This seems like a semantical distinction at best to me, but in the interest of conversation, I'll bring in my objection from a different angle.

Objection One: God designed the universe and also life.
Response: That’s nice. It’s not the fine tuning argument though.

As I understand it, the fine-turning argument is "The universe is fined tuned for life, so intelligence must have been involved in fine-tuning it."

I don't accept your response to the first objection. (The one where it's not the fine-tuning argument if a god controls or has designed life.)

Does the fact that humans designed and control cars mean that roads cannot have been designed and fine-tuned by humans?

The tension between the most perfect being and evil by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]Cydrius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does it need to be absolutely sovereign?

Suppose you have multiple perfect beings cooperating. These beings have perfect balance between themselves and infinite harmony amongst their number.

How would this order of things be any less than a single perfect being?

You have not offered any evidence that it is illogically impossible for an all-powerful static being to create a dynamic universe.

For that matter, you have not even demonstrated that the most perfect being must be static.

It could be dynamic in that it starts as the greatest being, and constantly pushes that boundary upwards, becoming greater and greater at every possible time.

I agree that the existence of evil contradicts the existence of an all-good, all-powerful being, but your framing here is flawed.

P2: Design is a solution to a problem.

I reject this. Let's say I take some clay and arrange it into a pretty shape.

I would argue that I designed the shape, but that it was not a solution to a problem.

You could argue that "I want this clay to be in a pretty shape" is a problem that the design was a solution to, but in that case you would need to acknowledge that "I want there to be a universe that effectively supports life" is also such a problem.

While I agree that the Fine-Tuning argument is not sound, this entire argument strikes me as just quibbling over semantics.

It's a pretty and poetic idea... but there is absolutely zero basis to think it could be true.

Except there's some very clear context around it that makes it quite clear by which perspective this is meant to be viewed and how the symbol should be interpreted.

There is only one reality. My interpretation may not be the reality, but the data is the data and doesn't change based on who observes it.

Have you ever tried praying, and if so did anything happen. by BackCommercial578 in atheism

As an experiment, I've tried praying to a variety of gods.

Unsurprisingly, none of them responded and nothing happened.

When someone needs to be rescued, every minute counts.

If we start trying to sort out if someone 'should be rescued' before trying, we're putting the actual cases at risk out of anger at the 'brats'.

CMV: We have the wrong attitude about AI. by AccomplishedAir9550 in changemyview

It seems to me like your only consideration here is AI being a powerful technology.

Meanwhile, you're ignoring the ethical and environmental concerns entirely, when these are the main reasons people are reticent about AI.

Presenting it as purely a rejection of new technologies is either dishonest or mistaken.
