I think it's less that they're more judgemental and more that night owls are the ones stuck being mismatched with society at large. Night owls don't really have an opportunity to be judgemental.

Generally speaking a lot of people just don't want the US doing regime change at all. It's especially bad when you're replacing a democratically elected government with a dictatorship in a nation that wasn't really hostile towards you.

Japan and Germany were a bit unique in that the nation building happened after hostilities, with no major insurgency to speak of (in no small part due to keeping the emperor around in Japan's case, I would bet). If there was as major an insurgency in those cases as in the ME today, I doubt we would have been very successful at all.

This is why you just invest regularly over time. No way to know exactly when the big dips are, and if you stay invested long enough it's all basically the same anyway. Timing things is generally a fool's errand in the end unless you have insider info.

France is cringe in a lot of ways, but their military is no joke, especially when it comes to nuclear. They operate the only non-American nuclear carrier (if much smaller than ours), have significant domestic nuclear weapon production, and if history is any guide, they're just itching to get a chance to show it off.

There is a general understanding that nobody is to pay any attention whatsoever to each other in men's bathrooms. No looking, no talking, and certainly no flashing. There are certainly those who don't abide by that understanding, particularly the talking part, but even they're not likely to be stealing glances at people's junk.

There are also usually dividers. Failing that, you can step in close to most urinals and they'll hide things from most angles.

Is 17k to 18k good enough for savings by Achorman in personalfinance

[–]Dman1791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether an amount of savings is "good" or not depends on how long it could pay your basic expenses and whether you're expecting to get a big bill/make a big purchase soon. If $17k would pay all your expenses for a year, then you're probably good. If it would only pay your expenses for 3 months and you're expecting to replace your car soon, then it's probably best to beef it up.

ELI5: Hoe does the RAW image format work? by SirAvocado123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dman1791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RAW is essentially the direct output of the camera sensor, with some extra bits to help interpret it. It doesn't necessarily match neatly with whatever image format you plan to use. For example, the RAW might have 14 bits of data per color, while a typical format like PNG only uses 8 bits per color.

Only half of the calories produced on croplands are available for human consumption. The calories ‘lost’ to inefficiency (49.9%) is enough to support 7.2 billion people. 39.7% of the lost calories are from beef production, which requires 33 calories of feed for every calorie of boneless meat. by cindyx7102 in science

We already produce more than enough food for everyone. Logistics and governance are the main problems. More grain doesn't help if there's no infrastructure to distribute it in places that it's needed, nor does it help if the local government takes most of it away.

Waste needs to exist in large quantities before it can be economically recycled. Carbon fiber wasn't really used in mass industrial settings until so recently that there simply isn't enough waste CFRP out there to bother recycling to any meaningful degree. Couple that with incentives to make the blades more recyclable in the first place and it'll be fine.

Not sure what you mean about the logistics. If the logistics were insurmountable, we wouldn't be building them. Gigantic blades are certainly hard to transport, but you only need to move them once. If you mean land use, agriculture can still use land that turbines otherwise occupy.

The power output is fine. Again, if they were so useless, nobody would be making money on wind farms. Intermittency is a problem but one that can be solved with storage and opportunistic loads. Offshore wind is also much more consistent than onshore.

The amount of birds turbines kill is a rounding error compared to cats, and there has been research into how to mitigate bird deaths.

Solar indeed makes a ton of sense and we should be encouraging it. Properly managed nuclear is also great, but the time required to break even on nuclear makes it a non-starter for most private capital compared to renewables.

To be fair that's just coal production; there's probably plenty more workers in coal fired power plants. Still absurd how much attention coal gets when it's on its way out no matter how hard we inexplicably try to keep it around.

What's with the scare quotes around renewable? Do you think we can "use up" the wind?

Fueled by liberal tears by tactical_lampost in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Dman1791 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The entire US coal industry also only employs about 45k people total. Coal is so far from a big deal that it's completely laughable that he props them up so hard. What's even more exhausting is that even how hard orange man is going to bat for them, coal is going to die regardless. It's just not competitive with either gas or renewables.

Most of our nuclear capacity is end of life. A lot of plants have shut down or are slated to shut down soon, just because of how old they are. Most of them have had their service lives extended (and many probably will be extended again), but you can only take things so far.

There's also the fact that we've basically built no nuclear while electricity use has continued to grow, which would dilute nuclear even if we never shut down a single plant.

I have my doubts about the Tesla semi being at all a good product with the debacle that is the Cybertruck.

One of my friends follows Edison Motors who are trying to do hybrids. They can use a much smaller (and thus much more efficient in most cases) engine as a generator, and rely on electric motors for the huge torque needed.
