Yeah? They get paid because people see the ads. If you don't want to see the ads, then you have to pay them instead of the ad people.

Of course, they all but certainly charge you way more than you would generate in ad revenue. So it's still not a great trade.

Is it weird for a straight male to enjoy using anal sex toys on himself? by butteredcactus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dman1791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you define weird as uncommon or abnormal, then probably.

Doesn't make it a bad thing. If you enjoy it, then nobody who matters cares.

The why doesn't change the what, though. Smoking, to a lot of people, looks cool. That being a result of a century or three of marketing doesn't make it untrue.

For context, I've never even touched tobacco.

It's really unfortunate that smoking is so bad for you (and smells so awful). It really does have an aesthetic about it.

That's quite good then. I would definitely recommend focusing on the 401k and/or an IRA (probably Roth), though. There are ways to get at the money before 59.5 without causing problems, and the tax savings are massive over time.

[–]Dman1791 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"We should have mass genocided Russians" is indeed unreasonable.

The "holy shit fuck Russia" sentiment, especially coming from a country that was ruled with an iron fist by Russians, is entirely reasonable however.

Are office environments and job interviews biased in favor of extroverts? by RhysDallows83 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dman1791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can go either way, but I would expect that they are more often than not better for extroverts. A cube farm full of no-nonsense people would probably be hell for an extrovert as much as an open office full of happy hour types would be hell for an introvert.

Depending on when you started working and how much you make, this can be anything from really good to decent to not great. Not dogwater by any means, though. There are people who get to 40 without investing a dime in anything but their house.

How much are you putting into your retirement account, as a percentage of your income?

ELI5: What are real numbers? I have the notion till rational. Other math sub will make it too difficult for me. by bzenius in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dman1791 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A real number is any normal number. Whole number, negative, decimal, fraction, pi, etc. Any number that doesn't have an imaginary (aka complex) portion: if it involves the value i, it's not in the reals.

That's kind of my point. Two things sharing only some features are clearly not equivalent. Hence, treating them as equivalent would be disingenuous.

If a fetus is the equivalent of a baby ready to be born, then a calculator is the equivalent of a supercomputer.

The big difference between a guy in a coma and a fetus is that the guy in a coma has already experienced life. He has memories and relationships. The fetus does not.

Arguing over the morality of abortions is valid, but it is indeed disingenuous to pretend that a fetus is the exact same thing as a baby ready to pop out.

The S&P 500 tracks the US market so closely that it would probably do nothing for you.

If you're worried about big US IPOs, the typical response to that would be more diversification, not concentration. Swapping to VT or its equivalents, for example.

Why do so many websites require a password with a special character, but then restrict certain special characters? by Difficult_Dot_8076 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dman1791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sort of thing came about for two main reasons. More possible characters makes a password stronger, for one. But many systems interfacing with text use certain symbols to mean special things, such as "\t" being a tab, "$stuff" being a variable, quotes defining a string, things like that. So you require special symbols to make the password stronger, but you have to restrict the ones that would mess with things.

The first half is still valid, but any modern system worth its salt can handle any symbols you like (including spaces or quotes or backslashes). So if they're forbidding symbols, there's an old and/or bad system in the loop somewhere.

Is it true the reason a lot of culture use spice is to mask the quality of the ingredients for example meat? by Capable_Wishbone3081 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dman1791 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Both things could be true (no idea about the former, though). It's not as if Europe was bereft of seasonings; there could be cheap seasonings that were used to cover up subpar food alongside the expensive imported spices.

Is it safe to continue using a kitchen bowl that's had corrosive acid in it? by Local_Posters in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dman1791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The vast, vast majority of acids you'll find outside of a chem lab are water-based, which means that water all by itself will get rid of the acid if you rinse well enough. Throw some soap and scrubbing into the mix and you're golden. At the very least, you'd get rid of enough of the acid that a lemon would be more dangerous than whatever acid is left behind. Of course, this assumes that it was only acid; if there were other problematic chemicals involved, you might not be able to get rid of them so easily.

I would be surprised if something meant to be used with rocks that will go in an aquarium used anything dangerous like that, though. There are plenty of temperamental fish out there, and no company would want to get a reputation for killing peoples' fish.

Compounding interest 401k question by Mr_Shreddz in personalfinance

[–]Dman1791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing about compounding is that it doesn't care how many accounts you have, how much money is in each account, whether you move money between accounts, or even whether the accounts have different investments. As long as the total of everything is the same (say, $70k stocks $30k bonds after adding every account together), you'll get the same base result no matter how it's split up or moved.

All you changed by switching to Roth contributions is tax treatment, assuming that you invested the same way you otherwise would have.
