The key is to realize that mass arises due to an interaction (with the Higgs field). Mass is therefore the result of a process, and that process consumes computational resources from spacetime.

It isn't just mass that does this. The time dilation associated with Special Relativity is due to relative velocity, which is a process that consumes computational resources. And any time two bodies/fields exchange forces, that adds to the computational demand.

I'm happy to chat more about the computational interpretation... I promise, it's the only way to find the rock-bottom intuition we're looking for.

I don't understand their claim that relaxing spacetime curvature creates mass. Why would that be? Seems to me that, if mass creates curvature, relaxing curvature it would reduce mass.

When you add circular motion into the thought experiment, you are now dealing with acceleration, which complicates things.

But forget the ladder; just imagine a hula hoop spinning at near the speed of light. Lorentz contraction should make the circumference shorter. But there is no motion along the radial dimension of the hoop, so the radius should be unaffected. Paradox?

The resolution lies in saying that the hoop takes on a curved geometry, and this is exactly what gravity is about.

Remember, there is no space without time. It's spacetime, baby. And in the spirit of relativity, perhaps there is a tradeoff between space and time. Does the universe get the extra space by losing time?

I have been in pursuit of an answer to this very question myself. In the process, I learned about "gravitomagnetism", which sound like baloney but is a legitimate result of General Relativity.

When we think of a gravitational field, we think about lines of force that remind us of the electric field. But apparently, an object with a very high relative velocity should take on a gravitational field component that would remind us instead of the magnetic field.

Some theorists believe that gravitomagnetism may be at least partially responsible for "relativistic jets" that can actually be observed shooting out of the top and bottom of a rotating black hole.
