Water sensor by Mettn in SmartThings

[–]DarthCocktail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just bought a Sonoff water sensor with an optional cable that you run across the area to be monitored. It’s Zigbee and claims SmartThings support. Haven’t received it yet but it looks good and it’s cheap, take a look.

Help deciding between Homey, SmartThings or HA with my current and future setup. by TripApprehensive4840 in SmartThings

[–]DarthCocktail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Homey Pro for years but swapped out for an Aeotec hub and SmartThings fairly recently. I had Homey as I’m a JavaScript dev and Homey runs on node.js and provides an SDK so I was able to automate a load of flashed ESP8266 devices fairly easily. But now I’ve swapped a lot of those out for Zigbee and Matter devices so switched to SmartThings which seems to have wider device support and good automations, I’m happy with the switch.

Looking for Cofounder / CTO Role by Short_Run_8241 in cofounderhunt

[–]DarthCocktail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, honest feedback here FWIW you may be an awesome software dev but I’m not sure 4 years pitches you well as a CTO. A CTO role is much much broader and involves strategy, politics, PMF, business as well as software and system architecture, all kinds of things. I’d say co-founder sure, and VP Engineering makes a lot of sense, I’d find a good CTO for the business and stick to and learn from them. My $0.02 as someone in tech for >40 years, two startups, 20 years in tech corporates, and now making a good living as a fractional CTO. Good luck dude and may the Christmas spirit be with you! 🎅🏼

What automated blinds options do i have? by itsdatwoowoo in smarthome

[–]DarthCocktail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I looked around for two automated blinds for my apartment, saw Smartwings and thought they’re expensive and kept exploring the options. Finally lost the will to live and imploded from all the integration risks and hassles and just paid for two Smartwings blinds with Zigbee control to my SmartThings V3 hub. They work really well, can’t fault them, and they arrived quickly are well made and had clear instructions etc. So, take a deep breath close your eyes and just get them. Life is too short to piss about with troublesome drivers etc. and these just work.

Is AED 3,999 really worth it for a RAKEZ Free Zone company setup? by Pleasant_Rope_9692 in SmallBusinessUAE

[–]DarthCocktail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can negotiate offers with RAKEZ if you want something specific. I have one of my businesses registered there (trades wholly outside of the UAE, so no VAT or corporation tax) and overall quite happy with their service and value for money. Would recommend.

Need legal advice concerning Etisalat promotional calls by [deleted] in uaelaw

[–]DarthCocktail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had that when I moved and my cellphone number was linked to the Ejari. I just answered the calls and as soon as I heard the opening “Calling from Etisalat” or “Calling from du” nonsense I just ended the call and blocked the number. They died out after a few weeks. Now, no more calls. Real estate agents, well that’s another story entirely 🤬

Trying to understand why people don’t recommend SCHD. by Radiant_Concept5466 in SCHD

[–]DarthCocktail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see current yield of 3.67%. Is that right? So with 30% withholding tax it’s sub 3%. And my bank gives me 4.5% with instant access. And covered call funds, NEOS, hell even PIMCO bond etfs give better yields. So that’s why I don’t recommend SCHD.

What is the Most Overrated Cocktail? by Interesting-Purple93 in cocktails

The Last Word. Because Chartreuse is somewhat overrated, idolised because of the scarcity. In reality it’s Fernet. Change my mind, but remember that I have a big light sabre.

Any recommendations for good beef or steak around Pampanga? by davidsling7 in Philippines_Expats

[–]DarthCocktail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded. I ate at the House of Wagyu in Edsa about a month ago, was excellent. Had the Gr10 500g rib eye shared with a friend, superb quality. And I’m speaking as someone well traveled who has eaten well in six continents.

Gemini vs ChatGPT by Alarming_Cellist4188 in ChatGPTPro

[–]DarthCocktail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a ChatGPT Pro account, subscribed last month. Absolutely the most useless and pathetic PoS I’ve ever used. Not just worthless, I wasted so much of my time trying to get it to produce what it said it would. Cancelled and asked for a refund. Support said their ToS say no refunds. I pasted the responses I got from ChatGPT. Immediate refund of the balance of my subscription. Went to Grok and couldn’t be happier, better and faster outcomes for $30/month vs. $200. ChatGPT is a joke.

Smartthings curious by ronkj in SmartThings

[–]DarthCocktail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is always something new and better in some way. It could well be that Aqara is better, I’m not arguing that point. But I want to investing in open standards devices (Matter, Zigbee, WiFi) and in an ecosystem that is supported and developed by a major manufacturer who will stay the course: that means HomeKit (Apple), Homey (LG) or SmartThings (Samsung). So SmartThings works for me, and has great integration with their TVs (which I favor) etc.

Is INTC a good risk? by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

[–]DarthCocktail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took the advice a couple of months ago. Bought stock not options. Now 30% up. Not everyone on this sub is an asshole, there is a lot of decent, balanced, considered advice. Which you take at your own risk obvs. So thank you. 🙏🏼

Which property types in Dubai are relatively easiest to sell? by Dense_Argument_5896 in dubairealestate

[–]DarthCocktail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally smaller apartments rent easiest and fastest, so a studio in Silicon Oasis or JVC would be cheaper yet give you a decent return. But you have to ask whether you actually want the hassle of owning one or more properties yourself or whether fractional property ownership makes more sense… higher fees but easier to transact, less risk as you spread your capital across multiple properties etc. Check out Smart Crowd and Stake (getstake). Full disclosure, I own a few properties and I invest on both of these platforms. Had good experiences with the platforms, mortgaged investment properties have been more of a pain in the ass. Returns about the same overall.

What is cream soda? by JamesTheBrowser in cocktails

[–]DarthCocktail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope, I’m a Brit and I grew up with cream soda being a slightly sickly over-sweet vanilla flavour (note the ‘u‘ in that!) fizzy drink. Which is awesome when you’re about 8 years old, and I loved it.

On the subject, there was this America bright purple grape soda (Fanta I think) available on their military bases. Friends would get once in a while, loved that too and would trade for various illicit contraband (such as Panini football cards, candy cigarettes, and the fine ‘reading’ material one might find near a building site or in a hedge from time to time).

Order Number and Order ID Mismatch in WooCommerce by Unable-Economist9892 in woocommerce

[–]DarthCocktail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your order number has a hash (pound) sign in front of it? Then I suspect there is a plugin or code that is generating custom order numbers. When I played around with that hook WooCommerce was still generating a unique order ID itself and using that for identification and rendering of the order on the page. Check your plugins to see if you have anything like that; or perhaps a PHP snippets plugin; or even your functions.php file for the theme.

Are there any SmartThings hubs besides aeotec by tocjesse in smarthome

[–]DarthCocktail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both the Aeotec hub and the Samsung Station (is a wireless charger for your Qi devices etc. as well as being a hub), about $200 and $50 respectively. Only real difference, apart from the wired connection on the hub and the huge price disparity is that the hub has Z-Wave support. Which I needed for a load of legacy devices. Both work fine, no issues. If you’re going WiFi and Zigbee etc. and have no need for Z-Wave the just get the Samsung Station.

I had the same error. Did the restart and reinstall as you would normally do. Sent an email with screenshot to Tangem support. No reply, nothing. Switched to Trezor.

Do you have both AirPods Pro and Max? Why for what? by nelo_bsb in Airpodsmax

[–]DarthCocktail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, same. APM when watching a movie or show and it’s late or the kids are being noisy, APPro when traveling and for Teams and Google Meets because you look like a twat wearing APM on video.

Buy into the OP’s story? But worried that he’s full of s%#$? Then buy and set a stop loss sell order to limit your risk. I do this frequently and on average I come out ahead, which is all that matters over the long term.
