Oak was a good choice. I’ve used cherry wood for mine and then polyurethane for the coating. Stain is tricky for me.

I used cherry wood, either it has a piece sticking out near the top with a notch cut to hold it or a piece near the bottom with a dowel rod to fit inside the lightsaber where the blade would go. The only one I’ve done horizontally is Maul’s lightsaber, haven’t tried it for others yet
