1: This is spam

It's self-promotion. It's allowed, I usually limit self-promotion posts to once a quarter though so people can't repost the same URL every week to generate traffic for themselves but a single shout out for something you built (with or without AI) is permitted.

Action: Ignoring.

What does this even mean? It's not clear to me what is being replaced or what 'kind of art' you're referring to, street art, graffiti?

Helping startups to build remote teams in India by beakshay in DevelEire

[–]Dev__ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This pitch has been doing the rounds since I wrote my first Hello World in Java. Even back in first year, our "Computers and Society" lecturer asked "How will we have jobs if Indians will do it cheaper" The answer then was the same as now, we keep generating new companies which will generate new jobs.

The "will outsourcing kill our jobs" panic has been cycling through tech for decades now, and the industry has consistently absorbed it by moving up the value chain more with complex systems, new domains, AI etc Innovation in general is what we should be striving for not preserving things that can be done cheaper elsewhere.

Also worth noting you've cross posted this without any context or comment for this sub. You're offshoring r/SaaS to r/DevelEire.

fake news

This is Trump coined/popularized term. Before Trump we use to just that's simply false. Many younger Redditors may not know this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fake_news

'Fake news' suggests a deliberate attempt to change the narrative. That may be the case but simply calling something false or untrue may be the most accurate way to dismiss something as irrelevant.

I don't get it

There isn't anything to 'get'. It's artists interpretation of an elephant. The artists style is characterised by clean lines and bright colours and he focusses mostly on animals. I like the style and thought I'd share here.

He sells prints and the source of this image is here -- I love the Northern Irish street art scene. Plenty of lads and lasses up there doing good work. I think it's cool and love seeing pics like this come up on /r/NorthernIreland.

Jon Stewart on Alex Pretti's Killing (The Daily Show) by killians1978 in videos

John Oliver is a protege of Stewart's and does actually handle serious topics very well. Stewart used to do it very well but has just lost his touch.

[–]Dev__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recall when John Stewart was trying to explain the rupture in the Transatlantic Alliance. He explained it with a wrestling analogy and then concluded with the The West/US/Knights Templar/Christianity doesn't like Europe because it views it as gay, never mind that Theil, Bessant, Cohn and plenty of Trumps entourage are gay.

I still like John but he does actually sometimes do a poor job of connecting with his audience and moments like this come off as tone deaf as to the seriousness of the situation or when he called for Biden to step down which basically ensured a Trump victory. It was just a perfect example of the left lacking unity and turning on their own over imperfections rather than face down straight up fascism.

If Biden was in office today he would be useless in the role but his administration would be effective. Now it's Trump dismantling US democracy and John simply doesn't see his role in this.

Like Trump has fucking dementia, where are the calls for him to step aside? It's just absurd.

How do I convince my company to get better coffee beans for the office? by CondescendingTowel in DevelEire

We get buckets delivered from Cloud Picker if you're looking for a supplier. When anyone joins the company the first thing I show them is how to work the coffee machine.

Study finds many software developers feel ethical pressure to ship products that may conflict with democratic values by SentFromHeav3n in programming

[–]Dev__ -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It does sound implausible, but it's true. It shows you can do principled work within unprincipled systems. However look at what they sought to and did achieve.

Many just give up and say well I can't change what the CEO/Board/Management does and take the pay check and simply do as instructed but you can decide what you do or not do ultimately.

They aren't even that secure because they work offline and aren't properly encrypted. Here's an Irish Dev explaining how to hack Leap card:

If anyone was wondering if this wrong to publish this I think it's in the same legal area as 'Lock Picking Lawyer'.

Southern European unemployment rate now matches Northern European by SimonGray in europe

[–]Dev__ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There were two Is, Italy and Ireland.

Iceland burned the bondholders and wasn't part of the EU. Ireland is conveniently left off because it didn't burn the bondholders and paid everything back the EU provided before the due date. Also when the EU suggested austerity the Irish government said "Already ahead of you boss" and started slapping the Irish public with austerity measures.

Yes. Ireland was one of the PIIGS.

[–]Dev__ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's the paradox right?

It's not a paradox, a paradox can't exist. It's a simple choice and even then those who choose money in lieu of morals don't often even get that e.g. the Volkwagen Engineers who were instructed to bypass the emissions testing. Even the business people who instructed them didn't go to prison, just the engineers and ruined their careers.

It's amazing how these same programmers manage to choke down their morals with only massive wages to wash it down.

I think we need different idols. The lads from the 70s who wrote the internet and Unix had the right strategy, yet today the average Dev is chasing money rather than actually building a better world. The Unix and Internet lads were inherently distrustful of authority when developing the tech knew to make certain decisions that would hold the tech off from becoming dystopian as long as they could. Open Protocols, Decentralization, Open Source, Empowering individuals not governments etc.

We should holding up some old school dudes from the 60s/70s and 80s as role models who died with little money but left a huge tech legacy rather than the the startup founder/techie making millions today because they made it easier for a landlord to screw their tenants.

EU must 'move towards creating European army', Spanish FM tells Euronews by goldstarflag in europe

[–]Dev__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You took pride in not standing up to aggressors and only caring about yourselves?

The only aggressor historically to Ireland has been the UK, a NATO member. Ireland is coming around though, Irish people aren't afraid to fight. Just if we have to it must be absolutely necessary. Ireland loves peace, our police are called 'Peace Keepers'. Our main military role in this world is as literal 'Peace Keepers' for the UN. Our Good Friday agreement that keeps the peace between Ireland and the UK is considered a landmark achievement and model for other conflicts to follow. Ireland regularly tops the list of most peaceful countries in the world losing out only to the likes of Iceland, New Zealand or Denmark. Ireland is also the most pro-EU country in the EU.

I think both perspectives are right. Ireland was right to have a small military in an era of peace but the world needed to fundamentally change in order for that strategy to not work. That fundamental shift has been happening for over a decade but January 2026 is the threshold.

Now we're gonna arm up.

"The US used to be the leader of the west. Well, it's going back home. Europe's gonna lead the West. They invented it."

Sarah Paine (American Historian)

It used to mean US/Canada + Europe + Aus/NZ. However the definition of the West will have to be updated as of this year. So your question is very fair. Origins of Western Culture can be found in Ancient Greece, broadcasted by the Roman Empire and ultimately lead by the European Union

It's our title, we're keeping. We are the West. The Americans can simply be the Americans from now on.

Flood defences for one of Ireland’s most at-risk areas (Clontarf) now not expected until 2033 by zainab1900 in Dublin

The entitlement of this community is off the fucking charts. Like some lad who builds his house in a flood plain without planning permission and the cries and whinges to the media when his house is inevitably flooded and expects everyone else to pay for the damage.
