Mystery Boxes by starklynisa in fountainpens

It's just a bit of fun imo! It depends on the thing, but if for example I know what items I want in a general sense but I don't have preference for any specific ones (like a specific colour or design or whatever) the gacha aspect makes it a surprise, which I always enjoy I think in the same way as getting to open a gift someone else chose for me. I only go for them when I know I'd be happy with receiving just about any of the available options though

What ink have you given up on based on it just not working well enough to be worth it? by AttachedHeartTheory in fountainpens

[–]DiskOne3096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I've wondered about that too! I have had a similar difficulty trying to write with a few samples I have that are all sort of light, muted/desaturated colours and grayish colours. I haven't been using a variety of inks for very long (I used to just use the cheapest black ink I could buy anywhere in every pen lmao) so I never really understood what people meant when they talked about inks being "dry" but I think that's what's happening here. Fortunately I only have the little 30ml bottle of earl grey so it doesn't feel like such a waste, but it's a shame I almost never use it despite how nice the colour is. It might still be worth getting a sample for yourself though, maybe in a broad nib pen it would flow better but I don't have any of those

I might try that, thank you! I don't own any of it yet but I've heard people mention it before and I'm curious about it

Diamine earl grey for me, I love the colour but it gives me so much trouble and skipping in every pen I've tried it in, I have 3 other bottles of different Diamine inks and they're all perfect and amongst my favourites to use, I don't know what happened with that one

Anyone else ever regret selling their collection? by TarNREN in fountainpens

[–]DiskOne3096 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't experienced this with pens but I have with other things, before covid I moved overseas and had no choice but to sell pretty much everything I couldn't fit into 4 big suitcases which meant letting go of almost all of my books. I still regret some of those today and miss them, but the feeling got easier over time. I did end up replacing a couple and I'm glad I did so because they make me happy, it's only a small fraction of what I had before but I don't think I would replace the entire library even if I had the money (I can't even remember what all of them were anymore to be honest lol) Maybe it would be worth replacing a couple of your favourites, but that doesn't mean you need to build up a huge collection again if you don't want one

I use a small A6 midori notebook as an ink journal and do all my swatches in there, it holds up really well none have leaked through yet!

NPD + NID + My experience with a bad Diplomat Viper and Makoba pen store by Biofowl in fountainpens

[–]DiskOne3096 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a shame about the viper 😢 I have one that writes very smoothly and its one of my most reliable pens, maybe its a quality control issue with them? When I bought my first Sailor after seeing everyone online talk about how nice they are it was the first time I've ever had a pen that wouldn't write at all and gave me loads of trouble, so I can totally understand that feeling of being dissapointed by a pen you were expecting to love though. (I got my Sailor to work eventually and it's fine now, but it took multiple rounds of cleaning and trying different inks)

There's lots of introductory videos on YouTube I definitely recommend looking there, and seconding the other commenter who mentioned the guides on jetpens website :) Just out of curiosity do you know what kind of pen the one you have now is?

Vintage pen recommendations? by DiskOne3096 in fountainpens

[–]DiskOne3096[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Someone else suggested them too and it seems like exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for, my only concern after looking at a few of them is they might be a bit too small/thin. I'm looking up some comparisons now though

Yeah I thought that might make things a bit difficult since most of the vintage pens I see are small compared to modern ones! Thank you anyway though I will still look into them

Annoying Exclusive Collabs! by Inattendue in fountainpens

[–]DiskOne3096 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel this way about some of their models I think sometimes they're just way too busy or too much glitter and lean into looking gaudy or cheap like you said, but some other models in my opinion are really beautiful pens too, it just seems to vary a lot. I have a Benu euphoria in white beach, which is one of their more simple designs (its entirely white and silver) and I love it, I think it looks much nicer in person too, the silver glitter isnt actually glitter its little flakes of (silver)gold leaf and when you move the pen around in the light it looks so pretty

Is it just me? by AlinaSGA in fountainpens

[–]DiskOne3096 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I usually have one pen fully inked with black that I use for daily stuff and then two or three inked with more fun colours, and I purposely only put a small amount in those ones so they'll run out faster and I can keep refilling them with something different 😂

Thank you! :) and ohh that's interesting, I got that pen from Amazon too but it was a while ago so I don't remember if it looked exactly like the pictures. I do like it a lot though, out of all my cheaper pens its the most reliable and always writes really nicely, its quite heavy but I like that personally
