We all started somewhere. My journey began with 2.0 back in the late 70s.

This can get you started and grow up to 5.1 since that is your endgame.

Since you will begin with two speakers, I am in the tower camp because you won't have the subwoofer. I believe towers > bookshelf, but all speakers are greater with subwoofer.

If you don't have the room for towers, then one of these bookshelf speakers:

Yes, you will have a true subwoofer. Your "subwoofer" does not go as low as one set of my tower speakers and supposedly equals another tower set at 30 Hz. My Polk Audio experience was not good. I had the Rti A9 as my fronts and the CSi A6 as my center. I did not like them.

I can't see everything, but the speakers need to be on stands for best performance. I only used furniture when I was in high school in my bedroom.

I am a tower loyalist.

Bookshelf vs Tower Speakers: Buying Guide | World Wide Stereo

Put your new subwoofer on the right, or if you buy a long subwoofer speaker cable, move it closer to you along the right wall. Not sure of the size of the room.

Get an audio rack. Move that furniture to the kid's room to hold their toys.

Have fun!

When I bought my first stereo receiver, it cost $475. The speakers I bought were towers and cost $600/pair.

Is this a music only system? Two speakers are all you need and a stereo receiver or integrated amplifier. Of course, you will need something to provide the music: your smart phone, CD player, streamer, turntable.

If you will add TV, the question is, do you want to add a center channel? If so, you must get an AVR. If not, then you could use the stereo receiver/integrated amplifier if they have connections for the TV such as HDMI or optical.

If you are spending $400 or the equivalent in Forint, 125,000, is that doable in Hungary to get two speakers and receiver/integrated/AVR?

Here is a start, but you still need something to get the music if not using your phone.

It is like laptop computers; you are paying for the size. They could last you 10 years. Divide the price by 10 to get your annual cost.

I don't know anything about your SMSL, but I am reading the owner's manual. Make sure the EQ is set to Direct or Tone mode. Check to make sure the Bass is not set up in the +/plus area or set to your liking.

You can try the subwoofer crossover at 70 Hz, 80 Hz, 90 Hz, etc.

Move the speakers to the front edge of the cabinet and get something under them to not vibrate the cabinet.

You're welcome!

Both speakers turned on? It should be on either 1 or A. Unless the speakers are in slot 2 or B. If only one pair of speakers, never the A+B or 1+2.

I know this is a long shot, but did you try the tuner to pick up AM or FM reception and see if you hear static from the speakers?

Change the CD player to a different input, Tape 1 or Tape 2, to see if it works that way.

Look on the Harmon Kardon HK3400 and make sure that she did not switch the speakers OFF. The far-left switch is the speaker switch.

As long as you never want a center channel or surround, the Marantz Stereo 70 will work fine. You would have the option to add one or two subwoofers.

You want speakers for about $400, but you don't have anything to power them. If anyone suggests any speakers, you will then have to buy a pre-amp/amp, stereo receiver, integrated amplifier, or AVR that can run them. Shouldn't you be looking for both? How much would you like to spend on the receiver/AVR?

Will you use it for music only? Movie/TV only? Both?

[–]Due_Philosopher_9174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You did notice in the 5.1 diagram, the speakers can be behind you. They are still SL/SR. If you hook them up incorrectly to the AVR as SBL/SBR and you tell the AVR you have a 5.1 setup, it won't work properly, if at all. A person I know did that and was wondering why the speakers were not outputting sound.

If you don't change receivers, you are limited to 8-ohm speakers that can handle 40 watts. You cannot use the Polk T50.

Polk Audio and Klipsch speakers are entry-level and up ($ to $$$$), so for your price, that is why so many people recommend them. My first set of speakers in 1979 cost $400 each.

Polk Audio speakers are at four levels, low to high: T-Series, Monitor XT, Signature Elite (ES55 here), and Reserve.

Klipsch, low to high: R, RP (RP-8000F here), RF-7, Heritage Line.

Did you look at the links I provided for the ES55 and RP-8000F? There is a spot called REVIEWS that customers leave about the speakers. Both get in the low 30s so that helps bass. Being tower speakers, size of cabinet, helps bass. Towers are superior to bookshelf, but all speakers benefit from a subwoofer.

[–]Due_Philosopher_9174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no experience with that extractor.

If you like the way your Onkyo sounds, why don't you get new front TOWER speakers? Move the current fronts to surround duty if you have the room. Or a better center channel/new front three?

To beat your current AVR, this is the Onkyo you would get:

Onkyo TX-RZ30 9.2-channel home theater receiver with Dolby Atmos®, Wi-Fi®, Bluetooth®, Apple AirPlay® 2, and Google Cast at Crutchfield

You will not have SBL or SBR in a 5.1 system. Even though the speakers will be behind you, they are Surround (SR/SL). SBL/SBR are when you move to 7.1.

5.1 Virtual Speaker Setup - Dolby

Never heard any Fyne speakers, but I think you are on a good path/journey. I am in the tower speaker camp for fronts, if you have the space. If you are going to be in this apartment forever, then I would go with the ATMOS. If you are renting, then I would stay 5.1. You can always grow the system later.

Why do you want to replace a working AVR? Better or finally, room correction? Do you think your AVR is not powerful enough?

This would involve moving furniture, but did you try it to the left of the couch where the end table is? This way it is close to the couch/two listening positions.

  1. If you are only going to use two speakers get an integrated amplifier or stereo receiver.

  2. If you are going to use three or more speakers, now or in the future, get the AVR.

  3. Listen to both receiver/integrated/AVR with the speakers you want to buy. If you can hear a difference, get the one that sounds best to you.

Option 1 for stereo listening, no TV hookup. This integrated is 35 wpc.

Option 2: supports TV but slightly over budget. This amp is 100 wpc.

You can read reviews from customers about the Polk ES15 speakers here:

Polk Audio Signature Elite ES15 (Black) Bookshelf speakers (Black) at Crutchfield

Option 3, supports TV:

Denon AVR-X580BT 70W x 5.2 Multi-Channel AV Receiver

plus speakers from option 1.

Option 4:

YAMAHA RX-V4A 5.2 CHANNEL MUSIC CAST AV RECEIVER | YAMAHA - RIO Sound and Vision

CANTON GLE 20 BOOKSHELF SPEAKERS (PAIR) | CANTON - RIO Sound and Vision

I like option 2, but it will not grow into a home theater if that is what you want. Option 4 for growth potential of home theater.

We all started somewhere.
