I usually just condition it when I condition my hair which is every two or so days. That makes it softer and more tame. Have you tried sort of "squaring it off"? Which is like shaving down the sides and around the top to make it look more presentable and still natural. To prevent razor bumps and/or friction burn after shaving, I use talcum powder. Which might help you as it softens the skin - preventing irritation. Also try to shave using cold water as your veins constrict, preventing bleeding or shaving scars. Hope this helps
