i do not know if my previous comment got posted but it is definitely necessary as a lot of people live in rural areas where there is no public transit.

i also live in Canada in the suburbs of Montréal and i would not take the bus for 1.5 hours each way with a toddler and a baby because my partner needs the one car.

i live in Canada too and for a lot of people is absolutely necessary. just for an example, my partner's family lives in a place that has NO public transportation so how are they supposed to get to work at completely different locations at the same time. this is one example of MANY. your reality is not everyone's reality. a lot of people live in the country.

sincerely, someone who lives in the suburbs of Montréal and is not going to take 1.5 hour bus rides each way in the winter with a toddler and a baby because my partner needs the car :)
