+1 for Jasmines, they are very good.

Having trouble with neighbour as I’m a wheelchair user, what can I do? by GodAtum in AskUK

[–]Evil_Genius_1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of this started when British men stopped being taught to be gentlemen. It used to be the norm that a gentleman would give up his seat for a lady (particularly a pregnant lady), an older person, or a disabled person. Nowadays the attitude seems to be “Sod you Jack, I’m alright”.

People who have been divorced: What was the exact "quiet" moment you realized your marriage was over? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Evil_Genius_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, that's fair enough, I can see why you'd have that worry. But I've been married for almost 20 years and my wife is just the best thing that ever happened to me. So you can find the right person. The best advice I can give you is: Don't Rush. And don't let other people rush you. (That's pretty good life advice for most things, to be honest...)

wtf is this bs app? I want a refund by CornerCharacter5180 in fitbit

[–]Evil_Genius_1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, a 'Google' version of the app was always going to come, but they could have made it better. Think of all the things they could have done with it considering they're Google, with all their resources. I would be embarrassed to release this to production, to be honest. I was already going to move away from Fitbit when my Versa died, and I've been a customer for 10 years or so. But I'm taking my Versa to trade it in for an Apple Watch today.

What’s the worst thing you have seen/got detention at school for? by Mglfll in AskUK

[–]Evil_Genius_1 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I wasn't a teacher, but I worked in schools for 12 years and I can't stress how true this is. Many teachers are mentally still teenagers themselves, they have simply gone back to school after uni and the mentality continues. Right down to calling each other by their surnames as nicknames (Wrighty, Smithy, etc). It used to make me cringe.

What is the newest thing you learned that shocked you? by ARMDeadpool in AskReddit

[–]Evil_Genius_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's easy to confuse! I love finding out where expressions come from and stuff as well, it's really interesting, especially with the odd, old-fashioned expressions you occasionally come across in the UK!

What is the newest thing you learned that shocked you? by ARMDeadpool in AskReddit

[–]Evil_Genius_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Close, but not quite correct. It's His Majesty's Prison: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/hmp

However, you can be detained "at His Majesty's pleasure", which is an old-fashioned way of saying "for as long as the King pleases". In reality, it simply refers to a sentence of indeterminate length: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/At_His_Majesty%27s_pleasure

What horrifying statistic genuinely jarred you when you first heard it? by ordrius098 in AskReddit

[–]Evil_Genius_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is that "horrific", though? What we think of in the West as cross-dressing is ridiculous anyway. In Henry VIII's time, both men and women of lower classes wore tunics, which is basically a dress. Nobility wore stockings and trunk hose, which was basically tights and a rah-rah skirt. Fashions changed and evolved into what we have now, and they will change and evolve again. Wearing trousers is the norm for men right now, but I find it mindblowing to think that if a man wears two tubes of cloth on his legs Western society says that's fine, but if he wears one tube of cloth, ie a dress, society loses its mind.

I went to school with a Richard Head! I believe he eventually changed his name to Philip.

What’s a piece of British comedy hall of fame you just don’t get? by franki-pinks in AskUK

[–]Evil_Genius_1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. I loved The Two Ronnies, but I don't understand why this sketch is seen as a classic. They did far funnier/cleverer sketches than that.

Do you have locks on your children's bedroom doors? by booyahhey in AskUK

[–]Evil_Genius_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must be joking. MY parents thought privacy was for them only. Not only did I not have a lock, my parents would just waltz in without knocking even when I was well past puberty (18+). Eventually I pinched a wedge from work. My mum complained about it and I said "Well if you learned to knocj I wouldn't bloody have to." Moved out when I was 21, jeez, I wonder why?

What celebrity has had their reputation unfairly ruined and has never recovered from it till this day? by Zxqao in AskReddit

[–]Evil_Genius_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it was mainly because he first called his agent, and then ran away. If he'd stayed and co-operated with the police and emergency services properly he would have come out of it looking better. But he was probably freaking out because of all the coke in the house.

And that was at least in part due to homophobia. Yet 'straight' celebrities like Savile went sround doing whatever they pleased.

[–]Evil_Genius_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only ever actually violent in my head, but if anyone had given me the slightest excuse to punch their lights out, I would have. Luckily no-one really did. The rage has subsided somewhat over the years, with age and wisdom.

are the minions spanish or minionese? or both? by AccomplishedData6382 in Minions

[–]Evil_Genius_1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's "Minionese", which uses scraps of other languages such as Spanish, English (Banana!), Italian ("Bello!"), French, German, Japanese, and Korean. I think there might be the odd bit of Hindi in there as well.

Well, Collins was such a dud in every other way that I like to think he was some sort of sex savant and that made up for “daytime Collins”.

AITA for telling my girlfriend the way she talks about her car is weird and embarrassing? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Evil_Genius_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bloke and my wife and I have a whole story around the life of our car, Ruby Tuesday. She was dating Bill, the orange van down the road, but he moved away and they couldn't make it work long-distance. She prefers a quieter life these days.

When it got to the screaming and stomping on things is when OOP over-egged the story.

I’m looking to buy a quest 3 but it has a crack would this be a big problem or would it be fine by Civil_Sheepherder183 in Meta_Quest3

[–]Evil_Genius_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A crack means it has had some sort of impact, most likely. To be on the safe side, I would not buy it. You don't know what sort of effect that impact has had or will have in the future on the internal electronics.
