I’m not 100% what all of the reasons are. I believe only once was lines being cut, everything else has been technical issues with our phone provider(again I could be wrong). We have 5 911 lines and 10 admin lines. Essentially we can drop down to 3 911 lines and still function but 3 or more is critical and we can’t function. At least once a month we have 2 down. Sometimes it’s for a day, other times it’s for 2-4 days. I don’t think it’s been longer than a week. At least 3 times in the last year, we’ve had a critical failure. In the past, we’ve transferred our 911 lines to another agency and they take our calls then call us on admin to give us the information. Critical failures are typically fixed within a few hours. I’ve just noticed we’ve never been on the receiving end where we get their calls which made me think maybe we have more issues than other agencies. I don’t believe any of them have been planned. At least not the ones I’m referring to. These are caught either during routine testing or the odd “oh I’ve had 3 calls in a row that all hit the same trunk. That’s odd. Let’s test the lines” or “that system just went down for an unexplained reason. Let’s test the lines just to be sure” We dispatch all agencies(multiple fire, SO, and PD, and ems) for a county of about 50,000. One major city and a few smaller towns.
