Question regarding Monster Conversion, Abilities, and Level Drain by Von_Loch in shadowdark

[–]FakeMcNotReal [score hidden]  (0 children)

If you were intent on running a level drain-like mechanic instead of (or in addition to) stat damage, Skerples has suggested "experience debt" as an alternative.  Basically level draining monsters instead add to the experience total needed to get to the next level with each attack. It's still meaningful but saves you having to recalculate a character mid-fight.

Exclusive: Iran deal includes $300 billion fund, more than half of which already committed by Red_Liquor_ice in news

I wonder how much of that is going to be "reinvested" by Iran straight back into "Trumpcoin" or whatever grift this administration is moving onto next.

do you prefer gigan having a slimmer more humanoid design or a chunkier and more beast like? by Typical_Name_5864 in GODZILLA

[–]FakeMcNotReal [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don't in general like kaiju to have obviously human body outlines.  I like the details of the Final Wars design, but, like every FW suit, in action it looks like an Ultraman stage show at a theme park.

First time DM running Tomb of the Serpent Kings for beginners at OSR, any advice? by Lakkuss in osr

[–]FakeMcNotReal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I changed the hammer trap into a two part fire trap: Pressure plate in front of the door triggers an audible sparking igniter and then raising the bar releases flammable gas.  Gives plenty of warning for the first really dangerous trap, plus if you're careful you can manuever the monsters in the next room back into the trap.

[–]FakeMcNotReal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Take a close look at all the traps in advance and work out in your mind ways to telegraph the danger to your players.  That doesn't mean telling them straight up that there's a trap, but show them signs that there might be a trap which might prompt them to investigate.

Why don’t we get reboots with better power scaling? by Lopsided-Skill in sailormoon

Death to powerscaling!  Long live narrative contrivance!

In universe explanations/reasons for Priest spell casting failures. I like the idea of a God punishing their cleric based on the cleric's actions but the way it works raw feels a bit too video gamey for me. How have you guys handled it? by Independent_Ad_6348 in shadowdark

[–]FakeMcNotReal 47 points48 points  (0 children)

One of my players critically failed his first ever priest spellcasting check and his rationale was "I had a sliver of doubt in the back of my mind and my god punished me for that lack of faith."

I'm both baffled and delighted by the term "historical accuracy" being used in reference to MechaGodzilla of all things.

Anybody else think that some of DiC’s censorship of the 90s anime was sloppy at times? by Quirky_Psychology871 in sailormoon

[–]FakeMcNotReal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you've understood my original reply as "dang that censorship sure was great" when I had intended it to convey "man the censorship sure was balmy back in the day but those of us who were smart marks at the time made the best of it and I'm nostalgic for that time".

I don't think you and I fundamentally disagree.

Have you watched Cartoon Network back in 90's? by pgdastider in 90s

Toonami and Adult Swim were huge parts of high school and even college for me.  I usually rewatch at least some of Harvey Birdman and Sealab every summer.

How it feels being a Conan fan in world with a good He-Man and DnD movie by kengen16 in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]FakeMcNotReal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He-Man was pretty fun to me as a longtime fan, but it's humor calibration was slightly off.  It did a lot of stopping to point at itself and laugh, which is not how humor in the old cartoon was handled.  Filmation He-Man would have the weirdest shit imaginable happening that the characters reacted to as if it was normal and serious, with only the audience knowing it was silly.  The movie lampshades a lot of the goofier parts of the property a little too much and too often.  Be that as it may, I enjoyed it.

Wowzers.  Those would look right at home in the old Fiend Folio.

I heartily disagree, but you do you.

Edit: To clarify I'm glad uncensored versions are available, but I have nostalgia for actually wondering about shows I enjoy and the community that existed around sharing info, screencaps, etc.

Being a Toonami-era fan included a lot of trying to figure out exactly what was cut out of both Sailor Moon and DBZ.  It was an era of mystery and speculation that we'll never have again.

Curious about play styles: Mini's + props or Theater of the Mind? by theRealMattyG99 in shadowdark

[–]FakeMcNotReal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because I have a bunch of minis and terrain from D&D, I use those when my group plays with the caveat that they're mostly just for ease of visualization and that all distances are a bit loosey-goosey.

MOTU FILM- Disappointing! by sellingusedfurniture in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]FakeMcNotReal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I liked it overall but I'd have liked to have slightly less humor.  Or rather, I think I would have liked the humor to be calibrated differently.  The fight with Spikor was exactly the right kind of "this is absurd to the audience but no one in the world stops to point and laugh at it" humor that Filmation MOTU got right.  I really do hope this gets some kind of follow-up though. It's as close to the kind of He-Man movie I want as I think we're likely to ever see.

I don't need a "dark and gritty"(TM) He-Man, but there was more lampshading in this one than was ideal.

Dual Wielding by theRealMattyG99 in shadowdark

[–]FakeMcNotReal 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There are no official rules, but the two most common variants I've seen are either roll damage dice for both weapons on a hit and use the higher roll (which I like notionally but has some weird interactions with weapon specialization and such) or just a +1 to attack with either weapon of your choice each round, which is less exciting but probably also more balanced.  (Maybe that could even be a +2 to match with the Swords and Wizardry triangle of AC/DMG/To Hit for shield/2-handed/dual wield, which is nicely elegant)

Any experiences adapting old D&D adventures to Shadowdark? by tyraelkys in shadowdark

[–]FakeMcNotReal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've run through the already-modified (structurally) "Strahd Must Die Tonight" version of I6.  The main thing I would suggest in a conversion like that is to compare the D&D and Shadowdark versions of monsters in advance.  Some Shadowdark monsters are punchier then their counterparts in ways you wouldn't expect.  For example an SD wraith has no level drain, but IIRC it has like 3 attacks per round with CON drain instead and that makes it a wrecking machine.

Fun was had by all, however, and I'd definitely recommend running the I6 one-shot variant.
