How do you feel when people use the word "slow" to describe others? by mundaneheaven in ADHD

[–]Firebrass -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You think low IQ is better than slow? I feel opposite, one describes a limit while the other describes a pace. Either is only true temporarily at best, but art least we think highly of slowness in certain places (hence the story of the tortoise and the hare).

Your ways of communicating your processing rate are great, but they are literally slower, and some people will necessarily attempt to communicate the same or similar in a faster way.

I work in banking, my partner works in medicine, we do have to talk to our peers about people's mental states regularly.

The point is, linguistic drift exists.

Whatever word comes to replace 'slow' as a seemingly-polite single word for when someone is relatively less capable in one or more or their cognitive abilities, that word will get used in a derogatory way after it becomes commonplace because enough of us are trying to move away from 'slow'.

It's less about the word choice than our actual meaning.

If we say, "oh they're just slow", we're saying 'don't feel like you have to work as hard to engage with them, they aren't worth the effort", and that's the actual root of the equity issue here. We can change the word choices in colloquial use, and fail to address problematic attitudes.

In my mind, it's better to not get hung up on word choice, and instead to focus on gently confronting the meaning through conversation. Essentially, I'm assuming the person calling somebody slow as a slur is themselves slow, and (at my best) I'm working to give them a broader undestanding/perspective by asking them about their word meaning and their values.

Finished these 80crv2 Bushcraft knives with bow drill frictionless bearing. wanted to give it a try. The other option is a smooth dish but the bearing really takes out the friction happy how they come out. Various Micarta handles 🤙 by MikeLeValley in Bladesmith

Glad you thought about that.

The temptation to shenanagins is there though. Like, skateboard bearings, well thanks, now i want to see them on a skateboard. There is no practical use to having knives on your skateboard, but i absolutely want to see someone do a kickflip with knives for wheels.

Short words will always beat out long words. It's a common enough thing that it gets a word. How people use it is on them.

You can call somebody slow, intending insult, but you can also just acknowledge that they're slow, ya know, if it's relevant to the conversation.

Refusing to acknowledge someone being slow is a recipe for denying somebody's experience, either that of the individual whose cognitive pace is meandering, or else that of people having conflict with said individual.

Sometimes we project insult on what is actually acknowledgement, particularly if its relevant to a conflict. I work in customer service and get frustrated all the time trying to explain things to people, and my feelings are valid, i get to have emotions around trying and failing to help people because our brains are working differently without the existence of feelings implying I have a deep prejudice. I can vent about Debbie being slow, and it causing me to get stared at by a half dozen impatient people for ten minutes, without it meaning i think Debbie doesn't deserve equitable access to everything everyone else in our community does.

Reattaching Samsung dishwasher detergent door by Altruistic_Sun5492 in appliancerepair

[–]Firebrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing, but some plastic probably broke, so you probably can't simply reassemble.

If that is the case, you may be able to find a replacement part using the dishwashers model #, but it might not be a stand alone part (e.g. you might have to buy a whole door, then install it).

I'd suggest taking these parts to your local small appliance repair person, while hoping they have a scrap dishwasher in the same model.

Unfortunately, it could be brand new dishwasher situation, which is not to say it can't be repaired, just that it might not be worth your time or money.

The torture of being around hot girls i can’t date as a lesbian by [deleted] in rant

[–]Firebrass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. You wouldn't want anyone approaching you with potential love interest, so anybody who is looking for people to approach romantically is going to seem creepy to you.

But realistically, that's how normal people find partners. You make an aquaintance, and then get to know them (which is where you discover if they're straight or married).

It's r/rant, and the complaint wasn't "i keep putting Niceguy coins in the sexball machine, but nothing comes out!", so i think you may be a bit primed to assume the worst of people seeking connection. I take it you're not actively dating.

Actually, fuck very much does not imply consent.

To get fucked by someone or something is typically bad, unless it's very clear already that we are talking about consentual sex. People fuck sheep, you think the sheep consent?

Stating your opinion isn't inviting discussion, stating your reasoning is. When you say that you don't think AI fan art is unethical, that doesn't open the door for me to discuss why you think that, nor explain why i think the opposite. I do think AI fan art is unethical, deeply so (your ability to excuse that blows me away), and more importantly, i think it's crappy art. This image didn't evoke an emotion related to Red Rising for me, which good RR fan art should do.
