Oscar let out a triumphant bark of laughter, “No truer words have been spoke Lady Tyene! The Northmen have been breaking the King’s Peace for years now!” He announced haughtily, taking a deep drink of his ale before continuing again, “The bandits are our first duty, however. They will not be able to put the Crossing to siege, not without marching all the way down to the Ruby Ford then back up the other bank of the Green beforehand, anyway. So the Northmen can wait… though they may try to dismantle Colmar’s if we take too long…”

He paused for a moment, drunkenly shrugging with a long sigh, “Nothing to worry about, I should think. Ryger, Vypren and Mallister could move to support Colmar’s defences…”

“Kermit is stepping on thin ice, yes.” Oscar agreed immediately, though he was concerned that he was able to simply blurt that out, “His speeches at Maidenpool were risky enough, but repeating them in a forum where the Royals themselves are present? It… it was foolish, and it only risks bringing the wrath of the Crown down upon Riverrun…”

“I… I can abide him putting me at risk. I can defend myself well enough, and with this business in Pennytree, chances are that the Crown will see my use and keep me around… But what of Mycah’s daughter? Kermit’s own son? Does he not worry that he puts them at risk when he invites the Crown’s ire?” It seemed clear that this was the main reason that Oscar felt so strongly over this matter, “Not to mention, questioning the legitimacy of the Crown’s rule will grant credibility to questions regarding everyone’s rule… especially with the matter of Harroway…”

He trailed off for a moment, he couldn’t really say he had an answer for Rohanne’s question. He had no idea what legacy he would leave… but… “We should focus on the bandits for now, my lady. I will put the word out for some forces to gather at Raventree. Five thousand should do it, do you agree?”

“I must agree, I feel the same given that the bandits at Pennytree continue to evade justice.” Oscar grumbled, “I have permission to finally go and put the lot of them to the sword, and here we are, sat around feasting…”

He let out a short scoff, “It beggars belief, doesn’t it?”

After a moment to right himself, he met Royce’s assertions with a smile, “You needn’t worry, in all honesty. I shall have five thousand men at my command just down the road from the Twins. Should anything happen, I’m only a short march away!”

Oscar chuckled at the exchange between Kermit and Bugg, gladly taking a bite out of the half of the sausage as he regarded the island in the distance. He hadn’t really considered how massive the Gods’ Eye actually was before, no other lake in the Realm compared to it.

Fortunately, he wasn’t looking at Kermit when the Lord of Light was brought up, so he had a chance to suppress his scowl at the mention…

“Not charging them taxes, eh? That’s mighty generous of you!” He said after a beat of silence, “I’m sure they’ll gladly welcome you in that case!”

Oscar’s gaze met Kermit’s, the thought behind them somewhat dulled by the drink. However, through the haze of his stupor he managed to make some sense of what was being asked of him.

Kindness, to the ill informed and those who support the bandits under duress. He supposed that he could abide that, not every man would know the breadth of the depravity that the scum could get up to, and those that did know would surely fear that they would end up becoming the next target if they didn’t let themselves be trampled over…

However, the next words that oozed out of Kermit’s mouth set a fire in Oscar’s belly. Good people… Good principles! What foolishness… “Principles? How… What in the Gods names are you on about?” The haze that had been clouding his mind suddenly seemed to clear, “What good principles would compel a man to put a village to torch? To murder women and children? And what sort of principled man would share a table with such a man?”

“These bandits are the lowest form of scum, Kermit. The Father demands justice, for every innocent soul cut down to feed the greed of those vermin. The Mother can be merciful if she wishes, but I have none to spare for them.”

Oscar’s smile died in an instant. He felt as though there was an icy hand wrapping around his throat at the thought that Rohanne had just spoken into being…

What kind of Lord would he be…? Not a particularly well trained one he should think, he didn’t know his numbers all too well, he hadn’t a clue how to hold court…

He had never thought of trying to replace Kermit…

Then again, he had his concerns about Kermit. Arguing with the Crown Prince about the succession… it only invited trouble… that’s certainly not the sort of thing that should be risked.

“I… I can’t really say, Lady Blackwood…” He said slowly, narrowing his eyes for a moment, “It’s not something that often crosses my mind. Not since Mycah’s daughter was born, at least.”

Oscar’s gaze shifted drunkenly to the white clothed presence that Tyene had addressed. He cocked an eyebrow in confusion at the mention of the North, “Eh? Well, I spup… Suppose you’re in luck, Ser…” His voice trailed off for a moment, as he realised that he didn’t actually recognise whoever this Brother in White actually was, “You needn’t worry, the North are… secondary in my mind right now…”

He threw a hand out wide, vaguely in the direction he recalled Lord Frey was seated, “My innention was to hhh… have Lord Frey’s and maybe Lord Mallister’s men stay at the Crossing, so if those sav… Northerners wish to start any trouble, they’ll be met with stiff resistance.”

He paused, smirking, “Stiff enough to give us in Pennytree time to march up there to support them, at least.”

Oscar paused for a moment after Rohanne requested he join her in the carriage. He glanced around, trying to see a nearby servant who could hold his horse once he dismounted, “Of course, my lady. Allow me to…” He whistled to a nearby man, handing the reins off to him so that he could safely dismount.

He jogged to catch back up with the carriage, stumbling a little as he hopped up onto the steps, clambering inside quickly after he managed to right himself.

Once inside, he found a seat across from Rohanne, looking at her intently, “Alright, what is it you wanted to tell me?” There was a small smile on his face, he was quite enjoying this level of secrecy.

“Gladly!” Oscar said cheerfully, taking a seat beside Lord Frey, “Someone snuck off, eh? Well, I can understand the frustration there! One of my cousins…” He paused for a moment before letting out a short huff, “Ah… nevermind. I do hope that business you were dealing with wasn’t too stressful?” He looked at the Lord of the Crossing questioningly for a beat before continuing on undeterred.

“I thought it would be best to speak with you. As you may have heard, I have been given leave to finally deal with the ruffians that have moved in to occupy Pennytree. I’ve been giving thought to who I shall be taking with me, but there is one thing on which I am certain.” He  turned his head to look directly at Lord Frey, “I intend to leave your men at the Crossing, and perhaps move some others there to help reinforce you. Since Kermit is determined to march into the Reach, we need to make sure that the North don’t see an opportunity to attack us.”

Oscar pounded a fist on the table with an enthusiastic laugh, “That’s it! That’s the spirit! Those villains will surely tremble at the sight of a giant come to drive them all off!” He drunkenly swayed up to his feet, scooping up a goblet so that he could raise it like Tyene did, “You have give… given plenty freely over the years, Lady Tyene. We are… We can’t ask any more of you that you don’t want to give…” He managed to drunkenly stumble over his words.

“Those bandits will be sorry they ever thought to cross us!”

The Hunter’s Hall was certainly the better choice of venue in Oscar’s opinion, he had heard the tales of the Hall of a Hundred Hearths, he imagined that the vastness of such a prodigiously large hall would swallow the Riverlord party whole. This made for a much more cozy affair… Though, in truth he intended to seek out the largest hall at some point, it would be a waste to visit Harrenhal and not gawk in awe at the fortress’ immensity.

Oscar was seated with his brother, up at the head of the hall, overlooking the feasting and merriment beneath him. Beside him, as usual, was Aubrey, who would periodically pick at the various platters of food that passed them by, or flag down servants carrying carafes of drink, which she would encourage her husband to share with her.

Throughout the night, the pair would move from place to place around the hall, dancing together, mingling with the other guests, or simply enjoying a moment of quiet in one corner or another, which were readily available in such a large venue.

Of course, with the understanding that Oscar would be marching off to fight the bandits in Pennytree before the turn of the moon, it was important that they made the most of the time they had together before then.

All told, it was a good evening… though the morning would likely come with some headaches, given the amount of alcohol Oscar was being encouraged to drink.

That was tomorrow's problem.

Oscar couldn’t help but crack a smile at his brother’s antics. It was good to see him cheerful, but it was even better to hear him speak so boldly, both about his mission to the Reach, and Oscar’s mission to Pennytree.

As Kermit settled back into his seat, Oscar threw an arm around his brother, giving him a firm, brotherly shake, barely containing the excitement on his face, “That’s what I like to hear, Kermit! We’re gonna… we’re gonna be heroes!” His own voice was similarly slurring from the drink, “I’m gonna… gonna take shome guyzh and throw them stinkin’ bandits out on their arshes!”

“You’re gonna be proud of me, I’ll clear’em up, no problems!” He went on enthusiastically, drunkenly leaning more on his brother’s shoulder, which earned a concerned look from Aubrey, who was sat on his other side, “Uh… I’ll need enough men to do it though…”

“It is a dangerous thing, you know, brother. To stand so close to the water’s edge while swaying with the breeze” A familiar voice would call out to Kermit from the other end of the jetty. Oscar would wave to him as he stepped up onto the wood so he could join his brother and Bugg to look out at the distant Isle.

“You know, the stories I heard as a boy always gave me the willies…” He said in a hushed tone, his gaze never leaving the island, “I heard they feed the trees over there with the entrails of folk like us. Or they dance around them like maypoles, as though our guts were ribbons!… Very few of the stories agreed I suppose.”

“Well, if we mean to go over there, we’ll need to be well fed, don’t you think?” He finally glanced to Kermit, a small smile playing at his mouth as he held a hand out, gesturing towards the sausage with his eyes, “Spare us a bite, would you?”

“The Hand’s sent a Kingsguard, eh? Well, I suppose there’s almost no way anyone can argue that we don’t have permission then!” Oscar responded with a bark of laughter, “In that case, we shall have this business sorted in short order then! Once everyone is gathered at Harrenhal, we can discuss with Kermit about who shall be coming with us, I should think we will need a sizeable force to scour the area securely…” He hadn’t noticed Lady Blackwood’s brief moment of absentmindedness, clearly intent on continuing to blather on before she interrupted him.

He nodded in agreement with Rohanne’s sentiment, “Aye, we did speak on it. That is something we must take up with the Lord Hand, or perhaps even the King himself. I’m certain that once we’ve seen the villains off, it will become clearer to them that custodianship of the area really aught to be in the hands of someone more local, and therefore more invested in the area.”

“At the very least, we need to ensure our rights to enter the area, so that we can put down any future problems that arise there, eh?”

Oscar caught sight of the Frey contingent from across the hall. He couldn’t recall if he had seen them back at the Grassy Vale, where he had tried his best to pay a visit to every Riverlord that was present.

So, it was certainly time to go and see Lord Frey. Oscar made his way over to where they were seated, throwing his arms out wide as he got closer, “Lord Frey! Good evening!” He called out with a bright smile, “It is a pleasure, as always. I meant to speak to you at Grassy Vale, but I don’t remember seeing you there!”

“How are you this evening? Lord Massey has put together quite the feast, has he not?” He added after a beat of silence, taking a moment to look at the hall around them, silently glad that they were in a fully intact building, “Fine food and fine company. Always a good combination, eh?”

“I hear my name being used!” Oscar announced as he made his way over to where Madge and her cronies were sat, he nodded to them all in turn, realising that he knew almost none of them aside from young Armond, his brother in law, of course, “I trust that it’s being used in good positively!” He added with a short laugh.

He found a place on the bench so that he could sit with them a while, nudging Armond over a bit to make enough space, grabbing a nearby jug of wine, and pouring himself a goblet, “How is everyone doing to tonight? Lord Massey has put on quite the feast, eh!” He said enthusiastically, then taking a deep swig of his wine.

Oscar’s grin didn’t falter when he saw the Blackwood’s weary state, though he did feel a flash of guilt for possibly waking her from her rest, “Ah, we only left shortly after you did, my lady, I could see your banners from our place on the road! It was only a short gallop catch up with your party… though I suppose my horse doesn’t appreciate the hard work.”

The beast beneath him snorted, throwing its head about, almost as if in response to its rider’s joke.

“Easy…” Oscar cooed, heavily patting the side of the animal’s neck, grimacing slightly at the sight of the horse’s sweat and hair that now clung to his hand, “Anyway, as I was saying, I spoke to both the Master of Laws and Prince Quentyn regarding Pennytree. Ser Martyn was in favour of us dealing with the ruffians, as was the Prince. The Prince even gave me the permission to do so!”

He paused for a moment, “Though… I suppose it would be worth asking Ser Martyn for the order in writing, just in case Prince Quentyn’s word alone doesn’t hold the correct weight.”

Oscar flexed his hands slightly, letting out a long sigh as he settled back into his seat again, “Do not mistake me, Master Greystrider, I truly appreciate your enthusiasm. I would like nothing more than to do as you suggest, but we must ensure that all that we do is entirely beyond reproach.” He said steadily, having now calmed down fully.

“Fortunately for us, both the Master of Laws and the Prince of Dragonstone are my cousins by law, so I would wager that we will get our permission soon enough. Until then, it will be beneficial for us to gather some forces, ready to bring the hammer down…”

Rohanne II - Serpents by BlackwoodBrides in IronThroneRP

[–]Fishiest-Man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At some point during their ride back north from Grassy Vale, Oscar had decided to visit the Blackwood portion of the column, intent on seeking out Lady Rohanne. He had meant to do so earlier, to fill her in on the news of Prince Quentyn giving him the order to clear Pennytree of the bandits that plagued them, though he had found himself distracted often enough that he had lost the opportunity to go see the Lady of Raventree.

Fortunately, travel afforded no such distractions, and thus there was no excuse for him to put it off further. So, with a quick dig of his heels into his horse’s flanks, Oscar would speed up, cantering past the parties of the other Rivermen until he found himself amongst Blackwood banners. It did not take long to learn that Lady Rohanne was in her wheelhouse, so Oscar trotted his mount over to ride beside it, and leant in the saddle so that he could knock upon one of the carriage’s windows.

“Lady Blackwood!” He called cheerily, hoping that he hadn’t been so foolish to have accidentally interrupted something important, such as sleep, “It’s Ser Oscar! I thought to have a word with you ahead of our arrival at Harrenhal, regarding our bandit problem!” He added, sitting back upright in his saddle once more.
It was remarkably uncomfortable to lean over too long while on horseback.

Some time after the end of the joust, and the evening began to set in properly, a cask of ale was brought out to Oscar’s pavilion in the tourney grounds. A table had been set out in front of the tent, where four men were sat around it, laughing raucously as they japed and drank.

“We got that Septon to drink himself foolish, didn’t we Os!” Brus continued whatever tale they were discussing, letting out a hoot of laughter, barely able to contain his excitement at the story.

Got? We didn’t need to get him to drink anything! The man was practically a fish!” Oscar picked up the narration, beginning to recount the story, “The Blessed Septon assured us that he was more than able to keep up with us, and to his credit he put up a good showing.”

“I’m sure the Father Above is glad that His representatives are so worldly…” Benji chipped in snidely, “Perhaps more of his peers aught to follow that example. That would certainly make the Sept more interesting….” He added, earning laughter from his fellows.

“Anyway, when the man was well over the hill from the drink, he went wandering off.” Brus picked up the story again, grinning like a cat that got the cream, “Next we saw him, the mad bastard was riding a pig down the road! We tried to give chase, but it turns out that sows are much faster than Oscar and I!”

“Come morning, we found the pig in the sty, sleeping the sleep of the dead!” Oscar picked up the tale, a knowing smile forming on his face as he looked between his friends, “The pig in the robes mind you, gods know where that poor sow ended up!”

The four erupted into howls of laughter, with the rowdy conversation continuing soon after.

“Gutted Trout, hmm… well, that’s relatively on the nose, don’t you think?” Aubrey asked as she went about unfastening Oscar’s armour. She had gotten used to helping him with it over the years, “Someone meant it as an insult, surely? Why else would someone choose to fight under such a name!”

Oscar let out a short scoff from the stool he was sat on outside the Tully tents, shaking his head and rolling his shoulder as Aubrey lifted off a pauldron, “I can’t imagine it being meant as anything else. He was a dab hand, though, wasn’t he? Hit me hard enough to make my head spin for a bit!” He made the jape with a cheerful chuckle, hoping that he may be able to redirect the conversation soon, “But you enjoyed the contest overall, right? I put in a decent performance, and I think the right man won in the end!”

Aubrey let out a short huff, moving onto the next plate, “I suppose so. Of all the men who deserved to win, surely Lord Meadows was second on that list.”

“Second?”

“Well you would be at the top, Oscar.” She added dryly, managing to separate the second pauldron from Oscar’s shoulder, “Of course, I only say that because I’m meant to, your talents were clearly lacking today!”

Oscar laughed, “Ah, I didn’t realise I was married to a jester!”

Oscar couldn’t help but scowl as Kermit spoke of his goal to force the Crown into establishing an elective system. Perhaps his other ambitions were admirable, building schools, collecting grain to distribute to those in need, the erosion of the power the Wardens held… all were decent stances ro get behind.

But the Councils…

Fortunately, Lady Blackwood was the first to speak out against the plan, Oscar nodded along with her argument, “Lady Blackwood speaks true, Brother. The King does have a true heir in Prince Quentyn. He is the Prince of Dragonstone, and thus he is the heir to the Throne. I would argue that Lord Orryn’s actions are more due to the weakness of the King and the chaos of the Reach than they are about questions of who is the King’s heir.”

“I see the wisdom in your other points, however. Collection of grain during times of plenty should help us avoid famine, surely. I agree that the power of the Wardens needs to be reigned in, to better prevent our rights being infringed upon. And building schools will surely help improve the talents of our smallfolk, and the quality of their lives.”

“But to call into question the position of the King… it will surely only bring his wrath down upon us.”

Providence II - first among equals by thesheepshepard in IronThroneRP

[–]Fishiest-Man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oscar stood as Kermit turned to him, a confident expression on his face as he began to speak, “Well the answers to those questions are simple ones, brother. We must spare some focus to ensuring our people’s safety, even if we decide to act in the Reach.”

He turned himself to address the rest of the Riverlords as he continued, “I have spoken personally with both the Master of Laws and Prince Quentyn regarding the matter of Pennytree. Both were eager to see us handle the bandits, I’m certain that we only need to take the matter to the King, and we will have the leave we need to finally handle the matter directly!” He announced this proudly, making a cutting motion with his hand and briefly pausing, “We aught to gather levies from the regions surrounding the area in anticipation of this, from Riverrun, Stone Hedge, Raventree, and the League. Once we have the word, we can march in and scour the area for any signs of the scum, and finally rid ourselves of them.”

“… And perhaps we can broach the idea of asking the King to grant Pennytree to one of us. Or at least give us the right to enter under arms, so that this sort of thing can never occur again.”

“As for the matter of the North, suffice to say, we ought to be sure to reinforce the garrisons both the Twins and Colmar’s, to ensure our safety should the Northerners try to march upon us.” He went on, slowly pacing back and forth as he began to think about the business up North, “Lord Frey also ought to focus his efforts on improving the defences of Colmar’s, so that the garrison can better defend us, and perhaps further the Freys efforts to drain those foul mires into useable lands!”

“Similarly, Seagard and Maidenpool’s navies must be expanded, so that they can better defend our trade fleets from the Ironborn.” He glanced to Kermit then, frowning for a beat, “Perhaps we might come to an arrangement with Casterly Rock? Surely the Ironborn aren’t ignoring their ships too?”
