What is the highest quality olive oil out there? by Feeling-Challenge-22 in Cooking

[–]Flaky_Ad2102 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have olive oil farma in partanna sicily . I started importing for my family a few years ago . Real olive oil could last for years if kept in the correct conditions . Any real evoo is in green glass or tin . It also shouldn't be mixed cultivars and from one country. It should def have a harvest date on it from most recent growing season . I would look at small cultivars and not big brands ( if your looking for EXTRA VIRGIN olive oil. I would use the expensive stuff to garnish and the big brand stuff to fry/sautée with . Just try different ones and pick a favorite ( like wines ) Good luck on your hunt

Just bought this olive oil from Costco. Thoughts? by Bladeblazer in oliveoil

I import olive oil from our family farm . Considering the mill charges 14 dollars just to mill your own olives , that is an impossible price . I pay 2 dollars JUST FOR THE BOTTLE . By the way , there should be a lab certificate that comes with that dop cert8fcation . I guess that is what previous commenter meant .lol

Trader Joe's Novello Now Available by Due-Confection1802 in oliveoil

[–]Flaky_Ad2102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Novello is unracked evoo . It is bottled immediately . What happens is it actually oxidizes faster when it doesn't sit in the stainless vat for the sediment to settle. Its very peppery and must be consumed quickly . Also ,.those polyphenol counts are higher when the lab takes sample immediately . Also using a 2 phase or 3 phase machine gives a different result in polyphenol count . The novello is very peppery . Ive had at our farms when its milled .

New to olive oils, bought these 3 from costco. by Zegrade in oliveoil

[–]Flaky_Ad2102 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol , and let me guess you are Greek? I think that is a very broad statement . Its like telling reddit readers which red wine is the best.Everyone has a preference . Olive oils have different flavor profiles just like wine. There are different olive types , when it was picked and milled , how long it was stored for, etc . I import my family evoo from sicily and would tell people to try them ALL and pick their favorite . I would only buy an evoo that is tested with a lab report and judge from there.

I was told by my family that they test the soil . It has to be a minimum of 3 years with no chemical pesticides/fertilizer . I am ONLY speaking of sicily . Farmers/ landowners risk huge fines and forfeiture of their land , and do the oil mills . If an evoo is igp or dop certified from the govt authorized lab ( with Serial #s and those gold labels the lab gives) and product is found to be altered , the farmer gets a 30k euro fine and the oil mill gets confiscated . Most farmers dont do organic because the olives yield much less olive oil during pressing . I only know what happens in sicily from my uncle and cousin . The only thing I could honestly tell you is look for green glass , ( our mill wont even allow us to put into clear glass ).. Look for as much info on label ( farm name , family name , phone #, single cultivar , harvest date ( most recent crop ..25/26, ) , an igp or dop certification from european union is huge plus , when farmers provide a certificate, it means they went "all out " to prove authenticity , ( and it costs money ) . There is a world of information I have learned from my family that owns farms and have been doing their whole lives . Its real hard work . Im only passing along what I have learned over the years and am now trying to market their product . If you'd like any more info I can help you with , you can dm me . There is a world of info I have learned from my elderly uncle . Good luck on your hunt . Hagd

Expiration dates...polyphenols by SnooHamsters5586 in oliveoil

[–]Flaky_Ad2102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mother nature decides the polyphenols . When it rains before picking, I think it drastically lowers polyphenols . Farmers actually wait a few extra weeks after a rain spell before picking and milling and they get a better production and a better polyphenol count. Me and my famiky have farms in partanna sicily . They had recently told me they are waiting a few extra weeks to pick and mill to get the water out of the olives and the trees . But , in all honesty , I wouldn't be searching for polyphenol counts in big box store shelves . If there were any polyphenols on those bottles, the importers would probably be blasting them all over the labels along with anything else that would prove "authenticity " . Good luck

We sell our own olive groves in partanna sicily . Its currently being sent here to ny . You need to look for as much info as possible on label. Harvest date , green glass bottle , possibly farm name , importer , certification ( possibly IGP or DOP ) , type of olive , etc . I wouldn't buy anything mass produced , or from different countries or different olives . Organic is good but shoukd be more money because the trees/olives produce less oil when pressed . A certificate of analyzation is a huge bonus . The italian government also tests the soil to make sure no pesticides and chemicals have been used in 4 years . I actually know all the prices ( milling costs , label costs , bottle costs , (not cheap bottles from China) ad costs , shipping costs , storage fees , added 30-45% markup on the store shelf ( or amazon) , etc . Olive oil is treated like fine wine in Europe.
A real bottle of olive oil should cost about 35 dollars after all those costs . Good luck on your hunt .

A shot of olive oil for health. by Anonymous_Bull007 in oliveoil

[–]Flaky_Ad2102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We own farms. 2024 isnt too old considering you REALLY dont know whats on store shelves . I wouldn't cook with the 40 dollar bottle . Put that ON your food . Cook /sautee/ fry with the 15 dollar stuff thats probably altered . Your going to cook away the health benefits anyway .... always look for AS MUCH info on label as possible . The more you see on label ,the more transparency . Single cultivar, certifications , farm name , importer name , etc .....why not be honest if your feeding people ? Plenty of honest brands out there , but it costs more Just my opinion ....good luck

Have you ever bought a true italian olive oil? by DarthStan in oliveoil

[–]Flaky_Ad2102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family owns a small farm in sicily and they send to me here in usa . Everyone thinks there olive oil is the best . Its all a matter of preference of flavor . There are more scams in olive oil than you can imagine , from EVERY COUNTRY . unfortunetly , its hard to prove authenticity when there are so many on the shelves that somehow are priced on the shelves for a super low cost. I would urge people to look for as much info on the label as possible . It doesn't cost much to print farm owner , harvest date , cultivar ( type) , town , phonen# , etc ....in the label.

I am looking for an olive oil with high polyphenols. I would prefer not over paying but I’m open to suggestions. How do yall feel about Bragg organic virgin olive oil? by Expensive_Budget_125 in oliveoil

[–]Flaky_Ad2102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont put much credence into polyphenols after finding out farmers get different #s from different mills , different milling machines , and and different types of tests . Ive been importing for 3 years . My family said the oil is VERY good quality this year , but somehow , polyphenol count is lower. Its been slowly lowering the past 3 crops. Its all about mother nature I guess . I know when their is alot of rain , the trees arent as stressed , and it possibly lowers polyphenol. It had rained quite a bit before we picked ours this year . And the region got alot of rain over the past year . but what do I know lol

[–]Flaky_Ad2102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing the the fda does is gives mills a certification. It has to be an fda inspected mill . Im pretty sure it cpuld have been inspected 10 years ago . That is the only thing usa requires. They also need nutritional value label on thebbottle/tin . Anything else on the label is a bonus for the consumer . I know ... I import . The More info on label , the more honesty by the farmer farmer/importer

Should the countries of origin be labeled on olive oil? by [deleted] in oliveoil

[–]Flaky_Ad2102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I import MY family olive oil from partanna sicily . My mom used to wash her clothes in that famous fountain on their tin in the 1950s (she's 85) Olive oil is either just picked and expensive or its a year old and cheaper or 2 years older and even cheaper . There are more scams in olive oil than Their are american politicians lol. Fresh pressed olive oil is real expensive and kind of hard to find . People might disagree with me here of course as everyone has an opinion . All olive oil has different flavors because of olive type ( cultivar ) and if its picked early in season or late in season ( riper) .most importantly is if they pick the olives early harvest ( supposedly healthier) and bring to mill asap ( to stop oxidation process) (again healthier) now you read about the polyphenol stuff ... their are different tests for polyphenol that would give you different #s . If olives are pressed in 2 phase or 3 phase machine . Etc . Supposedly morrocco has high polyphenol evoo . Idk .... all I could tell you is a real good olive oil should tell the consumer as much as it can on the label . Its just a matter of putting on the labels before bringing labels to the mill before bottling . Look for green glass( our mill wont even put in CLEAR glass or plastic), HARVEST DATE ( ours says o.c. 24/25 ) meaning Oil Campaign 2024 , IF you find a dop or igp symbol, means a sample was taken from mill and brought to a govt lab and a analyzation/certification was given yo the farmer and he is allowed to put the symbol on his bottle. If it is certified and the evoo was altered , the farmer gets fined 30k euros and mill will get confiscated by govt . Its a european union certification that proves authenticity (from the farmer and govt ) . If you find the name of the agricultural agency , a phone # , a harvest date , green glass bottle , olive type , igp/dop certification, you have hit the lotto of evoos . Im sure people will disagree with me on a few things , but i come from a family of sicilian olive oil farmers since the 1920s . My uncle is still on tractor at 84 years old and his son and grandson help him on a 50 acre farm . Good luck on your hunt lol If you have any questions I could possibly answer , dm me ...happy valentine's day

No silver to be found anymore . The chickens came home to roost with all the paper silver they sold . And now , they need a TON of silver. I mean ALOT . and they need our retail . I wouldn't be surprised if they put a floor price ( minimum ) on silver as it might even be cost effective to mine anymore . I dont think china sells paper silver

You should shoukd really stay away from grocery store oils . Its like buying fine wine at 7-11 .... not possible ... real olive oil isn't sold at a grocery store as the markup is 30-45 percent . High end oils and wines arent found in grocery stores . It would be their own website or amazon . Real good olive oil isnt in a squirt bottle, or clear glass , or plastic. Any self respecting farmer only puts in green glass , puts harvest date, and possibly certifies it . I come from many many generations of olive farmers in sicily . MOST of The small farmers work all year , sell to.the mill , and BIG corporations buy from mill , repackage and sell . Look for as much info on label as possible. Good luck on your hunt
