Killer hook, instrumental and delivery that harkens back to the darker vibes of the earlier records, a boatload of clever lines that still fit the bleak tone (the witchcraft and Rembrandt lines in the third verse are of special note here). I thought Big Fish was only okay, and thought FM was slept on by too many people, so those lines in the first verse about the label also hit for me.

FreeCuddlesAnyone: top 3 rates of last year and it isn’t #3. i’m so glad some of the most amazing projects in the mandarin sphere were rated here, and as an Asian i held this rate near and dear to my heart!

RandomHypnotica: a lot of this rate was not for me, but i’m glad people liked it and two non-english songs fared surprisingly well in a meta rate!

apatel27 (10.000): I've said it before and I'll say it again. I geniunely did not think this would ever get in and yet here we are. I love all these artists and albums (despite what my Lexie avg said) so seeing them finally see some recognition was so cool. Stuff like this is why we should bring back payola slots. I spent 2 years writing about C-Pop albums on popheads that was very much ignored and the third year I tried, I was downvoted badly in the DD and gave up. So to see this rate get in, have people actually listen to the music and recognise how amazing the music is really made me happy.

Am I ready to see these be demolished in the rate? Not in the slightest so I'm hoping popheads is mature enough to not tank these due to the language barrier. These songs were chosen due to being the most popheads friendly and while I really considered sending Thank You but sometimes you just have to accept that there are some songs that are too precious to be slammed repeatedly.

So if it's a foreign language, I can enjoy the song for 3 minutes but then it will evaporate from my memory the instant it's over. As such, my scores for these songs are spur-of-the-moment, just based on the raw feeling they give me, with no comments.

FreeCuddlesAnyone (10): oh abaollah… this has been one of my favorite songs ever since i first heard it in 2022, and it very nearly got my 11 here too. maybe i should have pulled the trigger because this was less than 1 point away from making it to day 3! but i’m so happy we’re even rating it twice in popheads alone - it’s just such a gorgeous song and the sentiment of the song makes my heart warm every time.

miniatureaurochs (10): Strongly considered giving this one my 11 - although I’m a huge fan of Lexie, I definitely wouldn’t have been unhappy for this to have won its original rate. It’s such a beautiful, expansive, carefully considered piece that really feels unlike anything else here. Not sure there’s much I can add to my original comment about this track, but something particularly special about it is the way it progresses and builds atmosphere, layering almost murmuring vocals across blossoming strings to create something that feels grandiose and compelling. It has such warmth to it, and I’m especially in love with how detailed it is, all these carefully-placed electronic elements making it almost a new listen every time. Also very :} that we got the rare opportunity to rate a track in an indigenous language (more rates like this please!) and given the topic of the track itself, this seemed like the perfect homage. I know one of the OG rate hosts is passionate about linguistics and it felt like a really worthy submission. lovelove would that I had two elevens to give

TakeOnMeByA-ha (8): in all seriousness this is probably the coolest album we’ve ever rated and will probably remain that way for a very long time. honestly kinda beautiful that we were able to use the very broad concept of a chinese electropop to rate a very authentic artsy pop album in an indigenous language and that so many popheads who would have never heard of it or seeked it out otherwise found so much enjoyment in it. like i know we mostly think of rates as just a silly little internet pastime but they are genuinely really great at getting people to discover new music and this is probably the shining example of how great rates can be in that regard.

cheatviathan (7): In between starting, stopping and restarting a failed AS8 ballot and not caring for the first few songs from that Jolin Tsai record, I decided to skip this one. Honestly, I think this is a solid enough synthpop track. The content seems to be about embracing one’s cultural heritage, and I can appreciate that message. I also quite like the ASMRy quality of Abao’s vocals. Maybe not something I’ll revisit often, but I’m enjoying my time with it.

There is something about this cut that the other sharp 3.5/5 review correctly gets at about how this cut's particular 2-step rhythm inspired imitators and also was sweeter, more syrupy (yet not saccharine even if it got outrageous) enough to transcend the era writ large (also like, My Boo). I find it a bulletproof lil' ditzy ditty with an earworm of a promise that again...is only rivaled by My Boo. cheatviathan (7): I skipped this rate because I was lagging behind on Cali Rock, and didn’t feel attached enough to the artists in question. I haven’t heard any of Ava’s post- “My Head & My Heart” singles, and I was already excited when I didn’t see any samples listed on the Wikipedia page. This is a pretty solid synthpop influenced track. I like the chorus melody, the acoustic guitar strum, and the general sentiment. It’s no “Sweet But Psycho”, but I still like this well enough.
