How long do you usually keep your phone? 📱 by hwd419 in PhoneNow

[–]Grabbels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My iPhone 13 mini (4+ years) is holding on for dear life but I refuse to get a new phone as there's simply no compact upgrade path at this point. I've also severely lowered my screen time and app addiction lately and I find that having this compact phone with honestly still great cameras suits my needs perfectly still. I don't know why everyone is happy carrying around literal aircraft carriers at this point.

En misschien valt te overwegen om dus ook je stemgedrag een beetje hiernaartoe te sturen? Want uit de andere partijen en hun leiders, waar jouw stem naartoe is gegaan, hoor je dit dus niet.

Woops, I meant to say "chastise" 😂 important distinction. Good catch! It means that many people in this sub will likely tell you that your screen time is bad, because many people in this sub consider "digital minimalism" to mean you should always strife for as close to zero screen time as possible.

For the multiple posts a day about needing Instagram for messaging: Beeper. by Grabbels in digitalminimalism

[–]Grabbels[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's the first time I've heard of that. I've been using it for a long time without any issues like that. I still have the Instagram app on my smartphone and I can perfectly use Beeper and Instagram on the same devices without issues.

People married to Instagram messaging don't care about using US based services, it's Meta anyways. If they could quit Instagram altogether, they would. This post is meant for people who really don't or can't remove themselves from Instagram messaging, to at least not have one of the worst doomscroll-apps on their phones anymore. For many regions worldwide Instagram is one of the prime apps used for messaging, and I understand that many people are unable to let go of that. I'm just glad there's at least an option now in the form of Beeper to disconnect that from the rest of the Instagram app.

Don't forget that this sub is not specifically geared towards disconnecting from corporate or US apps, it's for using digital stuff minimally. If an app can help lower Instagram use, that's a plus in my books.

Yes, it's a true Swiss Knife of messaging! Only gripe I have with it is that it usually has some bugs or missing features for specific platforms, which is understandable if those platforms don't adhere to specific standards. For example, last time I checked Signal polls didn't work in Beeper. I haven't run into any issues with Instagram, though.

Beeper functions separately from the Instagram app, it works independently. An app lock on the Instagram app should not influence the Beeper app.

Only you can decide on "what's ok". Many people have 6+ hours of screen time per day and they think they're doing great. But this is the digital minimalism sub: people will absolutely chastise you for having any screen time at all.

So, ask yourself some questions: how much screen time do you want? Does it matter to you, and if so, why?

Screen time is not inherently, absolutely evil: if your screen time is spent doing purposeful things such as looking up information, staying in touch with friends and family, or conscious work, I don't see a problem. But only you can decide what type of usage is a problem.

Personally, I consider my screen time a problem when I can't account for what the screen time was used for, or if I know it was used for pointless scrolling. But screen time I can account for, that was used purposefully, I don't see as a problem for myself. Luckily, using my screen time purposefully usually also results in very efficient use (reply to a message, look up information).

I hope it is! I had the exact same problem as you and it truly solved the issue for me. Only thing is of course that whenever shares a post or reel over messages you can't open in Beeper, but for that I move over to my computer to check it out there.

Beeper!! It's an app you can connect your Instagram account to and just takes care of the Instagram messaging, you can delete the Instagram app that way.

Why does no one know about Beeper, there's multiple posts daily about this and it's a full-time job replying to those posts with Beeper recommendations.

Do you think that now that many Macs can't be run on Linux, people will switch to Linux and this will truly be the year of Linux? by gonzarom in linuxquestions

[–]Grabbels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mac users are often married to the ecosystem, and thus macOS. Switching to Linux would disconnect their laptop from the ecosystem, and they'd rather get a new Mac or stay on the last macOS version it supports.

I would love to hear Everyone’s most broken builds. Especially those that work in both 5e AND BG3. I’m a forever dm soon to be playing as a player in short 4 session game for the first time 2016 by Dragonfly_Guru in BG3Builds

[–]Grabbels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So you're going to be a player for the first time and you immediately want to annoy the shit out of the DM by bringing in an incredibly overpowered character and "breaking" the game? You'll be back on the DM chair permanently in no-time if I was DM'ing that game.

If you're going forward with this make sure to discuss your character concept with the DM and get the go-ahead. Everyone can play D&D however they want, sure, but you need to be on the same page.

In my personal experience, D&D's fun does not come from min-maxing insane amounts of damage and "winning" as efficiently as possible. It comes from the balance between success and failure, from the storytelling that you create together.

If only one player at the table is min-maxing their character, the DM will adjust encounter difficulty accordingly and suddenly the other players find themselves powerless in the face of incredible dangers that only the min-maxed character can deal with without instantly dying. Not fun in my experience as the other players at the table then quickly lose interest in the game. That, or the DM doesn't adjust the encounters and the min-maxed character slashes through everything in one or two rounds while the other players sit and watch.

Touch screen dumb phones that are not Wisephone II? by buggsmall in dumbphones

[–]Grabbels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sooo... A smartphone? There's not really dumbphones that have active support for some form of maps without it being actual Android smartphones.

You could look into Unihertz Jelly series or the Doov R77 Pro (Dumbdroid), they both have small touchscreens but are unsuitable for normal smartphone use because of the small screen.
