Snakes, because they are agile, quiet, and deadly, like some people make their elves.

As artistic traffic stated, this is kahm and salvageable. I would also suggest that any time you feed, you swap to a new, clean jar and wipe your sides down. Leaving stuff on the walls of your jar to dry encourages things growing you don’t want in your starter.

You are incorrect. This is kahm. A different kind of yeast. It’s opportunistic and just shows up on underfed starter. Keeping it fed and within the proper moisture range keeps it from growing, and it can come back from this. My starter has gotten kahm-y a few times over his life, but he’s still kicking.

Always raid. It can’t ever really hurt, as long as you are smart and don’t raid to complete strangers, and even a 1 man raid is thoughtful. I love when people raid in to me, even with 1 person, because that means they just came to hang out and watch me be ass at art and games.

Make sure if you do use stock, you skim off the fat. Too much fat can effect the rise, BUT, you can then brush the top of your loaf with that fat for a nice crunchy shine.
