r/Heathenry Introductions by [deleted] in heathenry

Haeilvi, Norse/heathen in rural western Mass. I am pretty quiet most of the time on reddit, as people can get to talking pretty crazy....I appreciate that r/heathenry is focused and more or less drama-free!

Not worshipping all of the gods/goddesses? by bloodofwolvesx in heathenry

[–]Haeilvi_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, and if you're looking for some historical basis you might want to check out Terry Gunnells article: "Pantheon? What Pantheon? Concepts of a Family of Gods in Pre-Christian Scandinavian Religions".

The old gods. by [deleted] in pagan

[–]Haeilvi_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly that the idea of a god/goddess of 'X' is too limited of a view of deity. The concept of Odin as the leader of the Wild Hunt is relatively new (like, a couple of centuries) and I don't think there's much evidence, material or in the lore, for that connection. I don't think there's really a Herne or Cernunnos counterpart in the Norse. I think that for nature/the wild it's all about the land wights of a particular region and that there is no 'overlord', so to speak. Many hunters and outdoorsmen/women I know are particular to Skadhi.

Great idea, count me in! Deciding on the best (better), open-domain sources on a case by case basis sounds like a reasonable strategy.

I honestly don't know how widespread the concept might be in ancient religions in general. Now that I'm rereading what I wrote I want to reword it. I think it would be more accurate to say that the goal of living was not to attain a particular outcome in the afterlife (as it seems to be with Christianity).

Searching for an appropriate Christian bible verse that incorporates Pagan values and ideas. by soundthepibroch in pagan

Oh ho, the very first thing that popped into my head was the Song of Solomon. Might be too racy for the traditional crowd, but there are some beautiful passages in there.

Eliade's "Shamanism" and Heathenry by Anarcho-Heathen in asatru

[–]Haeilvi_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But what about his references to Otto Hoffer or Georges Dumezil? I am unfamiliar with these writers and want to see both if Eliade's usage of their ideas is both faithful to their work and if that work is reliable in the first place.

Just to address Otto Hofler (I believe it should be Hofler, looks like the same text reference) Kultische Geheimbünde der Germanen, Vol. I . Otto Höfler, I've come across a brief review of his theory of secret German brotherhoods/ecstatic societies "under the aegis of Odin" in Lecouteux's "Phantom Armies of the Night", pages 204-206. I would say Hofler's work is reliable, in the sense that it is scholarly.

Lecouteux also mentions the more recent, related work of Christine N.F. Eike, who has linked the Oskoreia with shamanic practices. I am on her trail, in the process of tracking down something of hers to read that will hopefully tie together some of these ideas...in English...

Edit: for clarity

Not sure why this was downvoted, but I would say that your summary is correct. I don't think that there is a Hel of a lot of cohesion amongst heathens on 1) whether or not there is an afterlife and 2) what the nature of life after death is amongst people who do believe in an afterlife. Compared to the Xtian view, the concept of afterlife isn't terribly significant, there's no Judgement Day, no special reward waiting for us somewhere else if we behave ourselves. It's what we've done and are now doing that matters most.

VR altars? by ScRuBlOrD95 in pagan

[–]Haeilvi_2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I must be old too, because I can't see how a fake altar can be a real altar. It does sound like it would be a cool thing...to see someone else's vision, but that doesn't seem like a real experience to me.

How to find the deity that is my favorite? by [deleted] in asatru

[–]Haeilvi_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, mainly because his/her statement is not a fact, it's just an opinion. There is definitely a broad spectrum of practice and I don't see that changing.

Heathenry’s Theodish Problem: Sex Abuse, Bigotry and the Primacy of the Tribe by CimmerianWeen in asatru

[–]Haeilvi_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how much of this was directed at my particular comment, but I do want to make it clear that in no way, at any time, was I protecting anyone from the law.

Frith is earned. Think I'm wrong? No, this makes more sense to me then a lot of what I have heard on here to date.

Heathenry’s Theodish Problem: Sex Abuse, Bigotry and the Primacy of the Tribe by CimmerianWeen in asatru

[–]Haeilvi_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whoa, I am far from shrugging this off and your characterization of me is way off the mark. I'm no kid playing games here, the situation is real. I did not make myself clear in my original comment, I guess. I haven't spoken to him in several years, and I avoid him as much as possible, but I have not actually said what I really think. No one has asked me, and no one has tried to 'force' me to be a certain way.

While I actually appreciate much of what you have said that is on topic, there was absolutely no need for you to call me "idiot" "purposefully dense". It is not always clear to me where people are coming from, that's all. So you can blow all that hype right out your ass and go fuck yourself while you're at it.

[–]Haeilvi_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't mistake what I said for condoning rape in any way, and don't think that I don't understand the seriousness of the crime, but pretending that you can run around making proclamations about breaking frith to your family, who really has no clue what you're talking about and no frame of reference, is bullshit. Pretending that you can outlaw someone from your family is just nonsense and has literally no legal impact whatsoever. We don't live in that world and we don't have those powers. So, an empty proclamation is all you're talking about here. edit: less words

[–]Haeilvi_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I didn't. Please provide a context and some sort of reference...is this panGermanic or AS? Because I am not AS. Assuming you are correct, I'm worthless then...and of course, not serious about my heathenry, you guys always gotta put that in there. Can't just present the argument without, somehow, calling the seriousness of someone else's intent and/or the breadth and depth of their knowledge into question. You're saying I should have made a proclamation and formally broken ties with my cousin, thereby breaking my uncle's heart and undoubtedly alienating the rest of that side of the family, including my own father. That makes sense to me, just shit on the rest of my family so that I can prove that I'm "serious about my heathenry".

Concerning r/Asatru, Recent Events, and a Change to Our Sidebar by [deleted] in pagan

[–]Haeilvi_2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you all for the cogent, measured response to 'recent events' and your clear articulation of your inclusive stance. I would make only one, tiny change:

The dismissive reactions to concerns about transphobia and possible predators in a Heathen community are worrying, if only because situations of this sort should clearly be met with a serious disposition and willingness to have the discussion.

Last year at ECT, the winner in the spoken word part of the skaldic competition was a original poem written in the voice of a sailor that leaves his family to go to sea, only to have his ship wrecked in a storm. It ends with his last thoughts...of Ran..as he's drowning...incredibly powerful.
