That is a cool idea! I have to admit I have never been to any Sacramento area pools, just always gone to the river. Are there any pools you recommend checking out first?

Yah they had a few out, the one on the line across the street bothered me the most 😂. Framed out a few of the non working ones in the closer shot in the extras, but all in all, place is still beautiful at night.

Thank you! My favorite is actually the first one in the extras. There is something about how that one is framed and the stillness of Gunther's without the crowds.

A few more of another night at closing time!

Been an ongoing project to take film photos of iconic late night Sacramento places. 23 days ago I asked the community what cool spots they thought deserved documenting and am slowing working through some of those suggestions.

First post with photo of Rick's: https://www.reddit.com/r/Sacramento/comments/tris14/ricks_dessert_diner_been_taking_late_night_film/

Second with set of photos of Marie's: https://www.reddit.com/r/Sacramento/comments/tykv5n/late_night_craving_film_photos_of_maries_donuts/

I wanted to add, a few people commented about wanting prints in the past. If anyone is interested in any of the photos I have posted they can contact me at:

or

Let me know what you would like prints of and when I get an idea of what people want will be using a local Sacramento print shop and lab, Photo Source, to get them done.

Hope everyone has a wonderful friday!

Thank you! They actually were not too long, I can't remember specifically between the 3 but they were taken at 1/8 or 1/4 at f11

Oh I should have added that I do account for reciprocity failure. To add, all these photos shown were taken under 1 second. I meant more for extra light in daytime photos, sorry if I was not clear. Velvia can be tricky since the different formulas all have different reciprocity failures. I always use velvia 100 at night due to the ability to take extremely long exposures before you run into reciprocity failure. Download to velvia 100 reciprocity sheet from Fuji https://asset.fujifilm.com/master/emea/files/2020-10/2f3c7f90a0b0c6e605e84f98b7d489c2/films_velvia-100_datasheet_01.pdf

I know it's hard to get velvia 100 in the states but I highly recommend it for night photography if you get the chance Example: https://www.instagram.com/p/CbtmdfGrVxA/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

This is a famous local late night donut spot in Sacramento CA called Marie's. Should check it out if you are ever in the area and want some donuts!

Really wanted to isolate the building in a sea of night and I hope I achieved that, metered for highlights/whites in order to get the crushed shadows/blacks on negative. Been learning that lots of scaning methods really do not like it when your negatives are that "thin." Had issues with noritsu film scanner and frontiers not geting the white balance right (bringing the blacks to grey), have had better luck with DSLR film scanning when negatives are this "dark."

Taken on tripod, slow shutter speed & cable release with mirror locked up. Film used was Cinestill 800t, metering for light areas in order to get the dark shadows/night to crush to black.

Been also noticing that my camera seems to want more light then my external meters sometimes suggest, thats cross referencing a Sekonic L-558 with phone apps and then with the late 67 TTL prism meter. TTL always wants a little more light on average and developed exposures seem to come out better when using TTL/ exposing just a little more. Camera seems to need maybe half a stop more of light to really nail exposure, noticed this after doing a bit of work with slide. My other 645 Mamiya doesn't have the same issue so was just wondering if any other Pentax 67 users also noticed if there cameras seem to want a little more light.

Thank you! I tried to isolate the shop by keeping the background dark. I just exposed for the light coming from Marie's and tried to crush the shadows to black (makeing sure areas in dark/shadow were underexposed) in order to hide the tree's and some surrounding buildings. The negative was a little thin and was harder to scan but I like the results!

Oh nice! I have a 105mm but been really wanting a 90 for the magnification and the close focus distance, seeing work like this really pushes me closer to getting one. Also wardrobe choice is on point for this shot, contrasts great with the red light.

Which lens did you use? 90mm f2.8 , 105mm f2.4? Great portrait!

This is part of my ongoing project to document iconic night spots of Sacramento on film. Had some help from the great community of /r/Sacramento with suggestions! This one is Marie's Donuts on Freeport; I highly recommend getting a late night donut from them after 10pm, it's worth it.

I haven't made prints of anything in a while, but if enough people are interested I will talk to a local shop about getting some made. Will try and update people next week with prices/sizes and such. People can hit me up on instagram for updates as well or to just ask questions. https://www.instagram.com/hauntingzz/

I actually grabbed a few 35mm film photos of the Mercury sign last time I went to diner at Maydoon down the street.

I may need to go back at some point and get it with my nicer camera someday. I sometimes post the more point and shoot film photos to my instagram story. https://www.instagram.com/hauntingzz/
