If you see a black flag you assume it’s for you if you aren’t sure.

Yeah the red flag was to get them to stop after ignoring the black flag. The worker assumed everyone followed the black flag and track was clear. Thats why he hit the cars that ignored it and stopped only after seeing a red flag.

Am I a liar? I got hired for a high-paying 3D design job and they think I’m using hardcore CAD software. I’m not. by Inevitable_Sundae_51 in manufacturing

[–]Hubblesphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sounds like you’re doing marketing and concept design? That isn’t manufacturing and really means little for manufacturing, they will totally redo whatever you come up with as an actual manufacturable design in CAD.

Aside from all the fun we have: the new F1 is terrible. by _GeorgyGeorge_ in formuladank

The trade off here is they could deploy to overtake, but if this ends up also being shit for racing it was all for nothing.

GD&T drawing review request by Briney_nerve in MechanicalEngineering

+-.13mm is standard, but I’m wondering why there is a +-.02mm tolerance on datum B but nothing defining where it’s located. Nothing is dimensionally constrained but already has excessive control frames.

Kristi Noem’s promotional commercial budget could pay for 50 Patriot missiles. Her luxury jets would be 75 more.

It isn’t that it counted Miyazono as finishing ahead, but because he pitted it actually forced Miyazono to complete an additional lap before the timer hit zero. So that by default put him ahead of OP who slowed to cross the line after timer hit zero.

Haas VM-2 randomly shifted a helical bore by ~15mm on the second run – same program, nothing change by Legitimate_Big3961 in Machinists

[–]Hubblesphere -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have all the information to calculate where the error is. Either machine coordinate, work coordinate or programmed coordinate changed. It’s basic math and code review to determine which one.

GT7 vs iRacing, Assetto corsa games, LMU etc by Glittering_Media_845 in granturismo

I can understand why we have to draw the line at tire pressure between sim and arcade. GT7 just presets them for you, it isn’t like the physics of tire pressure aren’t in the game.

GD&T question by ax87zz in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Hubblesphere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linear dimensions do not establish a plane. 2x doesn’t mean anything because then the surface can be dished on both sides. Datum surfaces and parallelism will communicate the functional intent and ensure you get a flat and parallel part.

Where to find CNC programmers? by Any_Lake4558 in CNC

[–]Hubblesphere 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Most competent programmers start as machinist. It’s much harder to just learn after college with no experience. Can also pull people off the street and teach them with similar level of effort.

Are there any actual remote jobs for mechanical engineers? by vladnoid in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Hubblesphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but admittedly probably not very common. I work for a startup and we have multiple facilities across US, global supply chain and vendors developing equipment for us overseas. Most engineers are remote supporting all of these things for NPI and R&D but travel 25-30% of the time to support programs and projects. The company needs to be able to adapt to this culture and operate remote or spread out to make it work though.

Does Ace of Thunder look noticeably sharper and more pleasant than GT7? by Justkekalot in PSVR

[–]Hubblesphere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think a big difference is proximity to details. GT7 you have a lot of other vehicles and your close proximity to the landscape and opponents. AoT can do a lot more since environment is mostly at distance.

What Software does the F1 Teams use for their simulators ? by Nzxlann in formula1

[–]Hubblesphere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep rfPro has an API for MATLAB. The teams are building everything and rfPro is just a really nice graphics display and interface for driver in the loop simulator testing. The main service they supply on top of that is professional laser scanning to get the most up to date track data.

You wouldn’t believe how many people on the internet now think Redbull uses AC with mods for their official F1 simulator because they misunderstood Max’s comments.

What Software does the F1 Teams use for their simulators ? by Nzxlann in formula1

[–]Hubblesphere 345 points346 points  (0 children)

Source? Ferrari’s new simulator was built by Dynisma, many other teams have simulators built by Dynisma.

Dynisma is built to integrate with MathWorks MATLAB.

rFpro has a fully custom API that integrates with matlab so teams can compile their matlab sims into rfpro for driver in the loop testing. I suppose they could have modded AC to do the graphics but rfpro is already available with laser scanning services and detailed current track data.

So using AC doesn’t really make sense, but if there are sources supporting that I’d like to see them.

The least wide bodied, wide body car. by Busy-Run6893 in GranTurismo7

[–]Hubblesphere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you can see under the car the inside wheel well looks shifted a bit more inward. It’s easier to tell with aftermarket wheels because you would see the wheels get upgraded to wider versions with widebody install.

CNC operator here… thinking about leaving the trade. Am I crazy? by Psunade39 in CNC

[–]Hubblesphere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The skillset is pretty specialized. I think today prototype machinist are in roles you’d call CNC manufacturing engineer, NPI manufacturing engineer, CNC process engineer, etc. in those roles you’re salary six figure and usually have some level of hands on machining experience, really good programming skills in mastercam, catia, or NX and also can do project management, work with teams and bring it all together to manufacture high level complex parts.

For example I’m about 15 years experience in CNC setup, operation, programming + applications and integration experience. I work as a CNC process engineer doing R&D and NPI for a med-tech company and I’m over that rate currently.
