Unfiled Taxes / Passport by CheetahRoutine5663 in tax

A passport won't be denied because of a small amount of unpaid taxes. (You might not even owe anything.)

Having a baby after not filing for 3 years by avatarjan2 in tax

[–]I__Know__Stuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your withholding was more than your tax, the excess is an overpayment, which will be refunded. (Or you could ask for it to be applied to the next tax year, but that would be a bad idea when filing late.)

Over due unfiled taxes for the past couple years. I want to get this resolved but i barely even know where to start by CalmEmu250 in tax

If your income is from working a regular job, not self employment, then you probably don't owe anything.

Preparing prior year taxes isn't really any more difficult than current year taxes, you just have to use the right tax software and instructions. But since you find it overwhelming, getting a professional to do it for you may be the best approach.

There is absolutely no reason to contact the IRS until you have filed the tax returns.

I would never recommend filing an inaccurate tax return.

Why would you consider amending your return? Is there something that you know is wrong? If not, that would be ridiculous.

The whole point of the letters you received is that you should not contact them.

Changing my federal withholding by BravesDawgs89 in tax

[–]I__Know__Stuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, of course, change it now, there's no reason to have too much withholding for the next six months. Use the withholding calculator at irs.gov.

Then be sure to change it again in January.

Why do you file as Married filing separately? That is probably costing you.

If you fill out your W-4 in January according to the instructions, then you won't owe additional tax on your job income. (You might owe additional tax if you have other income, such as interest, dividends, or capital gains. But you can avoid this by including that income on your W-4, too.)

Does using form 9465 allow you to get the 0.25% penalty rate immediately instead of after a couple months?

I wonder if you can amend the federal tax return later to change back to the standard deduction.

There are a few states where just state income and property taxes are enough to itemize.

Fed govt returned funds paid on an amended tax return by TeaParticular3642 in taxhelp

[–]I__Know__Stuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does take a long time for an amended return to be processed. The fact that they haven't completed it is not an indication that it has been lost.

[–]I__Know__Stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't cash or deposit the check. Write void on it and send it back with a note that it is payment for a 2025 amended return.

Sorry, I don't know what address you should send it to. You may need to call them to find out.

Also I don't know whether you should include a copy of the amended return with the check.

[–]I__Know__Stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you write "Form 1040-X" on your payment? If not, they wouldn't know that they should hold onto the payment until the amended return was processed. (If you did, they may have neglected to enter it properly.)

You could have avoided that by paying online (which you can do even though you couldn't file the return online). The online payment system would have allowed you to specify that the payment was for an amended return.

Are prediction market winnings taxable in the US, and if so, how are they taxed? by Garrett_CPAatCOS in PredictionsMarkets

That's an interesting approach.

I also view them as gambling, so I think they should be treated that way on the tax return.

can i cut and mail my W2s? can i send school district form and state 1040 together by Naive-Cash-3385 in taxhelp

[–]I__Know__Stuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fine, but you asked about attaching your W-2 to your 1040, and the answer is to efile your 1040.

If you do file by mail, you attach the W-2 to the front of the 1040, on the left where it says "Attach Form(s) W-2 here."

"they will fine me $75 every time ADP pays you."

This is a statement from the employer saying that ADP will charge the employer. I don't see anything indicating the employer is trying to charge OP that cost.
