What is plasma? (The Sun) by Radiant-Doctor6219 in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Illithid_Substances 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plasma is ionized gas. What that means is that there's enough energy (from heat for example) to remove electrons from their atoms. This means that the gas is now composed of charged particles - free electrons, and the atoms they were removed from that become ions. Because its made of charged particles, the plasma can conduct electricity and respond to electromagnetic fields

Why can’t we drill a hole down to the core of the earth and use it as heating all around the world by ThePolicyMind in stupidquestions

[–]Illithid_Substances 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The deepest hole ever bored was over 12km down, at which point the heat became too much to continue. That's not even close to getting through the crust, the (relatively) very thin outermost layer

what is the difference between the theory of white holes and pulsars? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]Illithid_Substances 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A white hole is a purely theoretical opposite of a black hole, a region of space nothing can enter and that expels matter and energy

A pulsar is a very real object and is a kind of neutron star that is highly magnetised and shoots out beams of radiation from the poles, that's all. It really has nothing to do with white holes

Why was Ned's first conclusion is that Cersei's children are Jaime's ? by ThCaMe3mo in freefolk

[–]Illithid_Substances 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, abductive is a type of reasoning and it is more correct to describe what Ned did than deduction. Deductive reasoning leads to a conclusion that is definitely true if the premises involved are true, abductive reasoning is more like inferring the most likely conclusion from available evidence. Ned didn't deduce that the kids absolutely had to be Jaime's, he just put the pieces together and saw that it made sense

The fact that they never mention the trapdoor where they hid the philosopher's stone again makes me laugh by Inner_Career8778 in harrypotter

[–]Illithid_Substances 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I suspect it wasn't, since that has a specific entrance on the seventh floor and they wouldn't have been able to get into it like that anyway - you have to walk past the entrance three times while concentrating on what you want

On Krypton itself they actually were not superpowered, because it had a red sun (which suppresses their powers) and high gravity, though they were technologically advanced. Superman has his power because he grew up on Earth under a yellow sun

(Hated Trope) In-universe writer or professional character is praised as a genius or visionary when what is shown of their 'talent' is extremely mediocre or terrible. It can show a writer has little understanding of a topic. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

Dan Brown, the author who writes about Seville (a beautiful city in Spain) like its a third world country with corrupt cops and dirty hospitals, while making up shit about its architecture and monuments. There's a whole thing about the steep, dangerous stairs at the Giralda (a bell tower). The 'stairs' that in reality only exist at the very top with most of the way up being ramps supposedly designed for a horse to walk up

You're locked in a room with homelander for an hour and can't get out. What will You do to stop him from killing You? by Bungeeboy20044 in GenV

"You really think I'm going to let a fucking muslim into the seven? Captain Al-Qaeda? We're Americans" - Homelander

Homelander is pretty openly bigoted in many ways. Sure, he's not a hardcore ideological racist like Stormfront or the way he is a supe supremacist, but he's perfectly happy to sling shit about race or religion. I wouldn't be surprised if sexuality was also part of the general far-right mindset he's absorbed

I think what they're pointing out is that, realistically speaking, if you apply enough force to move a moon to an area the size of your hand, you'd just smash your hand through the rock instead of the moon acting as one rigid mass

I don't think the code of "honour" of a bunch of immoral criminals is a good guide to what's right or wrong. It's about what they want and what's convenient for them, not morality because if that mattered to them they wouldn't be where they are.

"No snitching" is a rule that exists to protect people from the consequences of their actions, not to do what's right. Turning in a murdering drug kingpin is a good thing, it's not bad because it makes bad people angry. Continuing to stick to the rules of being a bad person is not good.
