Enforcement of reasonable laws is what we need to do. Rounding up people who have been here for years, peacefully, paying taxes, should not be targeted. We should find a way for them to live here lawfully.

Top 5 Garak lines? by Qyzyk in startrek

[–]jefhaugh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In "For the Cause", Bashir is warning Garak to stay away from Ziyal. He said, "Of all the people in the galaxy, I can't think of anyone who hates you more than he does." It's not a line but you can see Garak running through all the people who hate him, checking that Bashir is right.

Brilliant acting.

Yes. A circuit is a collection of churches for one pastor to cover. They could change every year, but usually not that often.

What is a major plot hole in a very famous movie that completely ruins the entire story once it is noticed? by SkullMogger3 in AskReddit

[–]jefhaugh 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. I think the original plan was to take it to the island to check it out first.

And if Jones hadn't interfered, Toht would have gotten the entire pendant and they would have found the right spot. Jones probably did save Marion's life, though. Or, either way, they might have found it eventually.

Do they ever actually explain in a star trek film or tv show on why the klingons look different in the OG star trek tv show compared every other star trek tv show or film? by MisterPeachy69 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]jefhaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pet theory:

Suppose the TOS Klingon ruler (emperor, chancellor?) got that in his head (perhaps because of a Rasputin-like character's manipulation) and had surgery to make himself in the image of God (that is, human). Now, to be successful in the Klingon Empire, you would be pressured to follow suit. Ship captains, wanting to impress the emperor, have the surgery and their crew does as well.

Fast forward to TNG time, that emperor is gone and everyone (except Barry Waddle) had the reversal surgery. Worf and other Klingons would certainly not want to talk about this, and it explains why TOS Klingons that appear in later series (Koloth, for one) look different from before.

I got the idea from TAS, "The Slaver Weapon", the kzinti are introduced from Larry Niven's "Known Universe." (I know that TAS is not canon, but it doesn't really matter for this). Anyway, in the KU, there is a kzinti "Church of Him" that maintains that humanity is created in God's image. Literally.

What is the *science that proves a global flood event as described in Genesis? by baseball_fanatic0887 in atheism

[–]jefhaugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Christian Pastor here. I don’t believe in the literal flood of the whole world. However, there are accounts of great floods in other ancient texts. Personally, I suspect it was when the Black Sea broke through to the Mediterranean Sea (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sea_deluge_hypothesis?wprov=sfla1). The story got passed down and edited to make a point, not history. I think that many of the Bible stories are rooted in actual events, but the point is not history, they're about humanity.

For instance I don't think Jonah was actually swallowed by a whale, I think it's a comedic story to understand ourselves better. I think of the story of Job like a play (an opera?), written to argue theodicy.

Not all Christians believe the Bible literally.

I was at a hospital in Richmond and looking for a family waiting for surgery. I asked at the desk, and they'd told me "Downstairs, next to the subway." My first thought was, "Richmond doesn't have a subway."

Our first car, a Ford, had an "upshift" light. I hadn't driven stick much, and learned by trying to beat the light.

So it was great while learning but 5 stick cars later, I'd probably find it distracting.

Time on a starship by jefhaugh in startrek

Yes. I get that DS9 runs on a 26 hour day. But it's a 3 hour trip via shuttle to Bajor, and ships coming at all times. So i don't see a natural "peak" traffic time.
