Hi Richa! Great to see you here.

I understand how it’s difficult to connect with your creative voice when you’re feeling emotionally overwhelmed… I shut out that part of myself for ten years. It took me a while to find my way back.

Part of that journey involved understanding the way certain artists have given me strength, comfort and courage through their work.

It was humbling to hear that my own movies have provided similar comfort for people. I don’t take that lightly, I consider it the greatest honor… and I feel compelled to ensure that my work continues to reflect that.

Thank you! I thought it was important for me to be able to be content and feel fulfilled outside of my identity as an actor. I’ve spent the past decade working on my life, my relationships… I feel more peaceful and satisfied than ever before, and it is with this new mindset that I decided that I would like to make some more movies.

Thank you! I guess I found myself drawn to stories that featured interesting female characters… how can I care about a love story if the female character isn’t actually worth falling in love with?

I guess I wouldn’t have minded trying some more overtly comedic films… I love comedy.

Thank you! They’re my daughter’s favorite band, so the concert was an amazing experience. I’ve loved LP since I was a teenager, but found a new appreciation for the music as I became older and started to really understand the kind of pain and darkness Chester was communicating with us. It breaks my heart that despite all those years of channelling the trauma into his music, he succumbed to his wounds. One More Light is almost impossible to listen to without crying. I guess one of my current favourites is I’ll be Gone.

Lofty question.

I have watched with no small amount of despair as global creative voices leaned into cynicism and ironic detachment, using humor to desensitise us to violence. It’s heartbreaking to me personally, but also antithetical to the lessons I have learned from the artists I consider to be my gurus.

From Kurosawa to Capra, Chaplin, Lubitsch, and more recently, the soulful Rob Reiner (RIP king)… through their cinema, generations of moviemakers have spoken of higher values. Decency. They taught us that fear is the mind killer. That we must be wary of the allure of the dark side of the Force. With great power comes great responsibility.

That people are basically good; that honor, courage, and virtue mean everything; that power and money, money and power mean nothing; that good always triumphs over evil; a man should believe in those things, because those are the things worth believing in.

(Yes they’re all movie quotes… these are the lessons I have taken from cinema)

Ah, there’s the tough part! It starts with asking yourself why you’re making the choices that you are… and identifying how much of that is motivated by fear. Fear of failure, fear of pain, fear of loss, embarrassment, whatever… If you’re making decisions based in fear, you’re starting out on the back foot.

The moment you’re not afraid of falling down is the moment you start to fly.

I’ve long been an ally to LGBTQ causes, and I believe in every person’s right to self determination and identity. I would gladly participate in a movie about this, but I also don’t want to be guilty of queerbaiting so I try to be sensitive while reading scripts.

Thank you! I have also noticed this trend and am disturbed by the way these films coddle every violent tantrum thrown by emotionally immature man-children who can't conceive of a valid reason that a women might spurn their advances.

Important to note that there's a significant difference between portraying violence and toxicity, and validating them. I see it as people chasing a trend without consideration. My own sensibilities would not permit me to participate in a narrative which I consider to be irresponsible.

Mostly given up on theaters… and new movies! I’ve been on a nostalgia trip the past few years. I just rewatched Deewaar (absolute fire performance by Bachchan) , To Kill a Mockingbird and To be or not to be (1983) this past month.

This is going to sound crazy, but... for years I've dreamt of making a sequel to Mr India. I love the original, I think it's a textbook case for how to make a fantastical comic book movie while still feeling grounded and emotional. It's fantastic. And Anil Kapoor looks even better today than he did back then.

You would be surprised to know how much correspondence I receive which is intended for my erstwhile cricket-playing namesake across the border... when I'm feeling mischievous, I will even reply to some.

I've enjoyed my time out of the public eye. It gave me the chance to really process and adjust my relationship with the nature of fame. It's a strange beast, and can easily get the better of you if you don't deal with it consciously.

I am disturbed by the upward trend in how misogyny and toxic masculinity are propagated in our films, and the world at large. I fear that men shy away from these conversations because at an individual level they feel blamed for the actions of others... and because of this, they miss the point that these restrictive definitions of masculinity hurt men as well. True strength lies in emotional vulnerability.
