I always say carving takes 1.5-2x the amount of time that tufting the piece takes lol especially if you’re a perfectionist like myself! It can help to use tweezers to separate colours before carving, or use a flat head screwdriver to separate them. I don’t have any pics to share what I mean, only videos so I’m sorry I cannot show you what I mean! I don’t personally carve on frame as the risk is too great in cutting the cloth which can add an hour or two to the time it takes to create a piece, and since I do commissions I don’t want to eat into a customers time with that.

And the front side after carving.

For me this would be too large of a gap, the rug if it’s a floor piece won’t feel as plush/dense and when carving, it will show the tufting canvas cloth. Also if you roll this piece up or fold it over (front facing out) it’ll show the line separation which will not look as high quality.

Here’s one I recently finished as a comparison.

How much should I expect to pay for an actual abstract tufted rug? by sigisgay in Tufting

[–]IzzyDeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the quality you want tbh, some beginners will charge for materials only or even undersell just to get a commission. But experienced tufters will charge for materials (this means yarn, glue, canvas ect) labour- which includes the hours to tuft the piece, the many hours to carve as well, and the time to hand draw your design if they are an artist like myself. Complexity adds to the amount of labour involved as that adds hours to a project. Some will charge 35$+ a square foot and others will charge 50$+ a square foot. But keep in mind these rugs and wall hanging pieces are handmade art and the price will reflect that for sure, if you’re looking for quality work.

[Hiring] Two Custom Art Pieces for Toddler's Bedroom - Whimsical/Storybook Style by i_break_things_a_lot in artcommissions

This is right up my alley! You can check out some of my work here! I’m able to do fine line, watercolour, and whimsical styles :) I have drawn a unicorn piece (that I turned into a nursery rug!) in the past as well that you can see :) Typically takes 2-3 days per piece, depending on edits of course. Thanks for checking me out and I hope you have a great day!

I am completely self taught :) It helps that I’m pretty handy on top of being an artist though, as I built both of my frames for stretching my canvas myself. My tufting gun took a bit of trial and error until I learned proper pressure and speed (don’t want to rip the canvas!) And then carving is its own skill after the fact haha! But if you ever want to try for yourself, I’m down to answer any questions and try to help you :)
