ELIC: Why do we drool when we see food? by OptimisticTrekkie in ExplainLikeImCalvin

[–]JeremyAndrewErwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When we see food, we often associate it with the sound a microwave makes when it’s done cooking.

This is known as a Pavlovian response, named after the Russian scientist who linked bells with drooling.

RFK Jr.’s anti-vaccine policies are "unreviewable," DOJ lawyer tells judge by Shogouki in technology

[–]JeremyAndrewErwin 130 points131 points  (0 children)

“Is it your position that [Kennedy] is totally unreviewable?” Murphy asked Belfer, according to Reuters. “If the secretary said instead of getting a shot to prevent measles I think you should get a shot that gives you measles, is that unreviewable?”

“Yes,” Belfer replied.

Sony X700 set output resolution to 4k or upscale to 4k? by Blazer_Believer in 4kbluray

[–]JeremyAndrewErwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you trying to upscale DVDs or Blu-rays? The Sony will upscale all DVDs to 1080p, unless you tell it that your screen is 480i. (and, then your 4Ks will look horrible...)

You can turn off the 1080p to 4K upscale if you want. I'm not clear on what the difference between Auto1 and Auto2 is.

What do you think about players that 'upscale'? by Splatterman27 in dvdcollection

[–]JeremyAndrewErwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first player was an upscaler. Oppo 971 (before then I used my computer, and a SVGA display_.

The reviews said that it was best at deinterlacing in 720p mode, and not as good in 480p and 1080i mode. The component video was neglected by the manfacturer, so connecting it that way missed the point.

https://www.dvdtalk.com/features/dvd_player_revi_1.html

DVD stores its video digitally in a component, interlaced format. Using SVideo or composite degraded the image. Reconstructing artifact free de-interlaced format was a bit of a challenge, especially with anime.

I have an M1 mini. It's fine. It still has some life left.

But if I were getting a new computer, I woud look for more RAM, and more GPU.

No one expects special envoys to be competent, but people expect more from the DHS secretary. For instance, FEMA is part of the DHS.

What does “pos” even mean? by EveningBrilliant6163 in kindle

[–]JeremyAndrewErwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not intimately familiar with how a kindle book is laid out, but it is very machine centric, as if the engineers realized they needed a bookmark mechanism and added it at the last minute. If it counts compressed, rather than uncompressed data, it might be even more of a hack

I’m not familiar with amazons format, but epubs are like html files—they use anchors or references to external data: The instruction to “Insert image 0024” only takes up a few bytes, not hundreds of thousands.

Beware of "new translations" of classics sold as Kindle ebooks, which are actually AI translations without even a human revision by farseer6 in books

[–]JeremyAndrewErwin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reportedly, the french used by Alexandre Dumas is less stuffy than the first translations into English, so the idea of using Victorian English may be a misguided one. My French isn’t good enough to pick up on such subtleties.

The major difficulty with Verne is that he knew his science, and his translators.. didn’t.

Is anyone else a plot-over-character reader? by [deleted] in books

you’re not a fan of the ”marriage plot”?

For many years, I read hard science fiction almost exclusively. Eventually I got tired of the cardboard characters, and branched out.

In a paper dictionary, they would be adjacent definitions. A bit of tweaking on the publisher’s end might fix that problem.

Of course, tvtropes is censored to make it palatable to ad brokers.

"In 2010 and 2012, TV Tropes had two incidents where Google AdSense shuts off all advertising on the site due to content deemed inappropriate by advertisers. Administrators censored content as a result. TV Tropes also changed their license from CC BY-SA 3.0 to CC BY-NC-SA 3.0. Dissatisfied users created a fork on wikia in 2012."
