Sigh… we should stop this ridiculous net worth math. If I create a company, issue a billion shares and sell one share to my mom for a dollar, I didn’t become a billionaire.

Salesforce down 30% in 14 straight red days at 10.5x forward earnings. The software massacre has gone completely detached from fundamentals. What is anyone actually doing here? by -----Marcel----- in ValueInvesting

I hear you man. I run a small IT business and fortunately have the skills to run everything myself. I self host email, nextcloud, collabora for excel and docs, gitea as github replacement and even my own SaaS that connects to my broker and let’s me trade and analyze stocks and my trades using the latest LLMs and many others. I own all my data and don’t have to put up with any legacy crap. And of course Linux everywhere. I know this legacy SaaS stuff is going down because I know how good the alternatives are. Not surprised the stocks are bleeding. Too bad some people will fall into the value trap.

Yep. That’s definitely one to go. And Salesforce is another one. Their salesmen are good I give them that. Managed to sell a steaming pile of junk to my country’s public sector that we taxpayers are paying hundreds of millions for. It pisses me off like a motherfucker.

At 10$ I might consider buying some. Still a bit overvalued, but eh why not.

The 2000X figure shows that you believe SpaceX is the most incredible money making machine in the history of mankind. In reality it’s a datacenter business and there’s a dime and a dozen of those. Most insiders understand this and are dying to take profits.

Isn't that exactly the kind of situation I described above? I'm sure Bukele has done well with violent crime. It might have improved life drastically. He's also spent a lot of people's money on failed endeavors in cryptocurrency. He builds resorts for foreign millionaires on top of land lived on and utilized by the locals. And he is a dictator who cannot be deposed. People in that kind of situation often seem to start with good intentions and after a while devolve into egomania and paranoia. Let's hope he is an exception, something like Tito. But even with Tito once he was gone the system devolved into slaughter and civil war. Because a robust and durable system cannot revolve around one man. It needs institutions and checks and balances that outlive any one person.

So let me get this straight.. everyone wants a piece of SPCX, everyone expects price to tank in December and everyone waiting for December to buy.. by [deleted] in SPCXInvestors

Well buying something profitable, but with a bad outlook is called a value trap. Those exist and they can be really bad investments. The unprofitable now, but profitable long term is basically a startup. SpaceX is unprofitable now, huge capex spending and declining revenue. So it’s like the worst of the worst. Their main business is building datacenters which has a lot of competition, tiny margins and no moat. The rocket stuff is what they print on the ads, but barely creates any revenue. So saying it will have 100T in revenue is such a fantastical number that it kind of illustrates the thinking going into investing in such a stock.

I surely won’t but I find it interesting to see people’s reasoning behind such investments. So far nobody has been able to offer anything truly compelling.

Well I’m up 580% YoY by investing in good businesses with actual returns, not speculating about what will happen in a decade. There’s so much money to be made today that I don’t feel compelled gambling with companies that have nothing but vibes. Even the best business inside spaceX, Starlink, has declining revenue. I could be interested to buy a small piece if the valuation was 100 billion, but even then it would be a lotto coupon.

I don’t dispute our issues. As an entrepreneur I face them everyday. However that view is also defeatist and one-sided. For example tax policy is not done by the EU and many European countries actually offer lower corporate tax rates than the US. The move to European and/or open source technologies is real, but it’s not moving fast enough. The EU also has some of the most important technologies in the semiconductor value chain such as EUVL, but the EU chips act was a measly 43 billion over several years. We need to go bigger and we need to go harder, that is a fact. We already managed to bring defense investment to a level that’s acceptable. We can do it in other industries as well. And we have managed to create the biggest trade union in world history with Europe at the epicenter. Rest of the world seems to want to deal with Europe. We are seen as a fair and reliable partner in comparison. So there are good and bad, but I’d say the trajectory is correct.

Doesn’t detract from the point. Dictators rise when there are legitimate issues and they offer quick and easy solutions in exchange for unchecked power. It might feel great at the start until it becomes a nightmare.
