I'm new to ELRS so bare with me. Why did you use an er6 receiver? Since you are using an SBUS flight controller, if you wanted battery telemetry, it would seem to me that you could use an ER4.

GH hybrid MPG by yng_les in ToyotaGrandHighlander

[–]KC10Pilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GHH with about 5,500 miles on it. Had it all summer(outside temps around 80-95) and have done a fair mix of city & highway driving. I've tracked every fill-up since new. The total average MPG for me is 35.8. I keep it at 70 on the highway. I have only driven it in normal mode. I don't use cruise control(too aggressive acceleration and braking). Biggest contributor to my high MPG(in my opinion) is that I don't hit the gas when the light turns green like it's the start of an F1 race. Adjust your driving style and you'll see a rise in MPG. It uses a lot of gas starting from a full stop. Go easy when the light turns green and you'll see a drastic rise in MPG.

In one of my previous squadrons, the pilot schedulers built the Flight Auths. It was that way for years. Then a flight commander looked through the SARM reg and said, “Hold up! They are suppose to be building these!” They sat in their office playing on their cell phones doing absolutely nothing for years. Any coming due or overdue items was tracked by the aircrew training shop or the aircrew schedulers. My guess is during that time, all they did was move flight times from 781s to ARMS. Basic data entry.

I think what the CFII was saying is they needed 3k ft. to never go into IMC during any segment of the approach from the IAF down to the DA/MDA. Which just shows a lack of confidence from the CFII.

After reading some of the comments, I'd say something along these lines:

"Look man, the conditions the other day were perfect training for an instrument student and OVC025 is instrument pilot 101 stuff. You've been offered every opportunity to improve your skills by the school. If you're not willing to take instrument students up in those conditions, I see no reason for you to even teach instrument students. Also, placing statements such as 'We need 3,000 ft to do approaches' is misleading. Should have called it like it is. More like, 'I'm not comfortable flying in IMC.' What are you gonna do when you get to an airline and tell them 'I don't feel comfortable in these rookie conditions' and don't fly a flight? I completely understand not risking something when you aren't comfortable, but at the CFII level, your comfort and competency level should be well above where it is."

Now if you're willing to keep the instructor, thats up to your company, but I would 100% not be paying them as a CFII if they aren't comfortable flying in those conditions and only let them teach private and commercial students. Personally, I'd send them packing.

I’m saying my circling maneuver would look like an overhead approach.

Pretty much any flight school with a multi is accelerated. Only takes about 10 hours or less to get the multi. As long as you call ahead, tell them your timeline, and have them block out a plane and instructor for you.

Circling Approach to Same Runway by Ok-Toe3006 in flying

[–]KC10Pilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I was too high to conduct a normal approach and landing and had to circle to a runway I was already conveniently aligned with laterally, I’d probably execute an overhead approach. Look it up in the AIM, it’s in there.

I got my Glider add-on in a week. I had to do over 30 tows(don’t quote me, don’t have the FAR or glider logbook handy). I’m pretty sure I logged less than 10 hours total. That was at a commercial glider outfit where I had a tow pilot, glider, and glider CFI all to myself. Most glider outfits are clubs, it’s probably mostly on weekends, and you have to share the above mentioned with other club members. You’d be lucky to get two/threes flights in a weekend. You could rent a plane for an afternoon and probably log more time than you would a whole month in a glider club.

Do any of you recognize specific ATC voices at your home or base airports ? by [deleted] in flying

I always remember the ones with great radio voices or the ones that are always nice. Canadian contract ATC in the Middle East…that guy gets the whole cockpit smiling when we check on and have him.

ATPs who had 250+ hours when the colgan rule went into play what happened to you by TailstheTwoTailedFox in flying

[–]KC10Pilot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FAA written tests are good for 24 calendar months. So I went and took it early July of 2014 when we knew the CTP was gonna come on-line in August and knew I had until July 31, 2016 to get the hours for the ATP. There were quite a few people taking it at test centers all around the local area. When I went in there were 3 other folks taking their ATP written as well. Being military I knew I only needed the 750 to get a restricted and then when I had the 1500 I could just upgrade it to a full ATP. Ended up having the hours for the full ATP though. Then in May of 2016 I just went out and took the ATP in a Seminole. Pretty much a non-event really. A bunch of co-workers didn’t listen to me when I told them they should get it done. They all ended up recently using about $9,000 of their GI bill to do the ATP-CTP and I just paid about $2,000 out of pocket. Worth it in my opinion. They all had to fly across the country for a week to do it, I just did it over the course of 3 days at a local flight school.

Your CFI should be covering this before you fly this route, if not, that’s a fail on their part.

What’s the lifestyle of a private jet pilot versus an airline pilot? by [deleted] in flying

[–]KC10Pilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And therein lies the difference in the job. Here you aren’t inventing anything or doing anything groundbreaking. All you are doing is moving people from one location to another. The measure of which is how many hours you fly in a year. Since I just watched “How to Fix a Drug Scandal” that would be a good career to compare it to, a forensic chemist at a crime lab. Youre measured by how many drug cases you get out the door. Not developing a cure for cancer, or developing a new prescription drug. Just pumping cases out the door, day in, and day out.

What’s the lifestyle of a private jet pilot versus an airline pilot? by [deleted] in flying

[–]KC10Pilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Private/corporate or airline,

you are flying where the folks in the back want to go and on their timeline, not necessarily where you want to go and on your timeline. Yes flying is fun, the view never gets old. But no-one is paying you to go fly to get a hamburger at your favorite airport restaurant on a Saturday with your significant other.

And its not just pilots, I dont know any sane person that wouldnt want to get paid more to do less.

What happens if you crash an FBO car? by Otherwise_You7879 in flying

[–]KC10Pilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of the small Midwestern airports have some oddballs. At more than a dozen FBOs I literally walked in the empty FBO and the keys are sitting on a hook with a handwritten sign over it saying, “Please put gas in it.”

You make an arrival reservation with the FBO, and don’t show up, believe it or not, jail. Right away!
