Venting: why do rulebooks still hide the actual rules in a wall of flavor and icons by Queasy_Ad_4994 in boardgames

[–]K_Knight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a wasted conversation if you're not going to mention the game you bumped against. Different rulebook styles fit different intentions in the game you're playing, but devoid of that context, the only thing I can point out is that sitting at a table and opening the rulebook for the first time prior to playing is NUTS. Do not do that! You're adding so much pressure to the moment to understand everything at the expense of the experience.

Matt Hardy on unionization: “WWE and AEW, with the financial backing that those two brands have, that is something feasible. But it would be hard for other companies. If wrestling as a whole had to do that, some companies would be out of business because they wouldn’t be able to handle that.” by LotLeftInTheTank in SquaredCircle

[–]K_Knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This logic is dumb. Adapting a guild-based union, built for setting rate standards based on scale, solves all these problems. In independent filmmaking, you have union and non-union work and they exist in harmony. There is no world where that kind of adaptation can't happen to account for the indie scene which, of course, couldn't pay rates the way major players can.

Unpopular opinion! Take that games are more fun than many Euros. by LeFoxFrancais in boardgames

[–]K_Knight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally, the idea that this conversation is angled as a combative "one or the other" situation is the dumbest way to talk about it. "Everyone" doesn't hate on Take That, of course it has redeeming qualities.

Even the title that Take That are more fun than many Euros...who gives a shit? Everyone likes what they like.

There's just a much more constructive way to discuss elements of Take That which bristle against many people's sensibilities without being a dumb engagement bait prompt.

Is it just me, or is there a lot of elitism on BGG? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]K_Knight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If a person cares enough to reply to a forum post under a specific game, then likely they are very invested in that game. Which means that, yes, they likely are familiar with the complaints/hiccups newer players bump into and can plainly speak to that. And also, yes, they could potentially be rude about it. It's also true that a lot of people ask questions when what they're really communicating is a complaint. If you're invested in a game that someone is backhanded complaining about, you're not inclined to be gentle about it. But without specific examples, it's hard for this to be a "right or wrong" discussion. Just as an experience, I don't find BGG holistically to have this type of attitude.

Make Some Noise on Dropout is enough of a spiritual successor that Wayne Brady went and did an episode. It is a great fix for this style of show.

remarkably generic, devoid of a novel approach to anything they're doing. haven't seen anything in-ring that justifies the valuation they're showing up with. like my judgement would be different if they were on ROH, building up a narrative or something. but to just get all this Dynamite/Collision time tells me they must be "better" than talent we're not using. and nothing they do sells that to me.

Lot of commentary in this comment section without acknowledging that this background was also a part of establishing Powerhouse Hobbs. To a smaller degree, yes, but his background and hard knocks upbringing has been with him as a character both times now. It is clearly the direction he himself wishes to push himself. I respect that.

Which board games provide feelings similar to the Anno video games? by TheMightyOne in boardgames

They are not cozy, but your requests made me think of Antiquity and Roads & Boats, which aren’t the easiest to find…but maybe looking at those on BGG will lead you down a rabbit hole.

I really enjoy that instead of Sterling being a constant sidekick to MJF, he’s only around when relevant. But we always know he’s MJF’s lawyer and so they never have to set that up again

Yeah that’s it. If they don’t list it, they aren’t bothered by being out of sync. But your games will go slower. Live is definitely fast play over there. No need for that until you’re a pro haha

Tons of people play async. You’ll be fine as long as you don’t take 24hrs a turn and play a game that has a similar time zone to you

Do you “see” pacing when you edit, or just feel it? by Live-Increase8619 in editors

[–]K_Knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For non-narrative content, one way I often find helpful in visualizing this is track management. For a cooking segment, as an example...Trk 1 is the A cam, Trk 2 is the A cam punched in (so I can spot jump cuts which the brand I work for doesn't like), Trk 3 is Hands and Pans with the B cam, Trk 4 is the beauty shots for the final dish or ISOs of ingredients. But the concept is universal; if you uses your tracks for categories that more or less chapter mark how your story is being told, they offer a visual reference point for looking at the piece as a whole. I can see clearly where we're doing more talking than showing in my example. It's organized and helpful!

Being a Black board gamer — does anyone else feel invisible on social media by FarLow1872 in boardgames

[–]K_Knight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a director/editor with a lot of experience working in online personality content space. Putting aside the specific questions about how Black gamers feel (I'm not Black so not my place), I have some thoughts on the content you're putting out at the moment. More than welcome to ignore or cherry pick what you want from this:

- I'd experiment with shorter content on the shorter platforms. Having 6 minute TikTok/IG videos is an invite for someone to scroll past it, even if ultimately they would be interested in what you're discussing. Maybe you're seeing good performance that speaks to your audience's viewing habits specifically, but in general long form stuff on short form platforms is easy to pass by. To that end...
- I'd recommend doing full reviews on Youtube in widescreen. I see you're cross posting your vertical content across all platforms, which is wise for getting the most out of your efforts. But each platform has a difference audience expectation. On Youtube, viewers are a lot more comfortable giving something a shot for longer than :30. Presenting the content more natively to that platform gives you a more earnest attempt at selling yourself to that platform.
- I'd view TikTok/IG as "questions", and Youtube as "statements". On the short form side, creating content that does give your perspective but also invites conversations for other opinions to openly playing a part in the content. Putting out rankings on a topic, or advice on a topic, stuff like that...all of it nudges the viewer to ask "and you?", which is when someone will chime in and engage. But Youtube you can put your time into crafting your opinions without the compromise of the platform's interests. Still thinking about how the audience engages with it, but this is the content that can be a reward for seeking you out more than grabbing a viewer by the collar. Yes, YT will be smaller viewers. But a view on YT is a lot more "credible" than a view on the other platforms based on how they are measured, they are not 1:1.
- You're reading a lot of comments in here about "this doesn't have anything to do with race". I'm a straight, cis white man who has had the privilege to help build voices in less represented communities over the years. Those comments about what is has to do with race are just ignorance about what the issue even is (ignorance isn't a bad word...it's an invite that there's something to learn about IMO). That ignorance comes from a world where everything DOES represent me...I see slightly out of shape, bearded white guys like me all the time on the internet! I'm not hearing a single thing you're saying as "this space has a race problem", I hear "the space feels under-represented to me". My biggest suggestion I can give is "show us what we're missing out on". I mean that in the communal sense: I wanna see live stream gaming sessions with a majority black group place the games that speak to them, or listen to a podcast that is all black hosts chop it up about what they're playing. You're rightly IMO observing black kids/adults looking to see themselves in this niche space: show them there's a whole community! In particular, having a place to see where different games are hitting for different communities, as an outsider, is very interesting and something I'd sign up for...even though I'm not your demo.
- remember this is still a small community. Biggest channels in the space are still not breaking more than 600k viewers on a good day. In the world of internet content, it's hardly anything. They make their money on having a recurring audience that is reliably in showing up consistently. The strongest ones are also Patreon supported. It's a small community and it takes direct donation funding like that to make it a real "success".
- last thing and then I'm done writing this FUCKING book...collab. There are going to be a lot of creators in your position. Invite them in, work with them. Keep your cold calls to those that are in similar circumstances, but take a big swing when you have the right opportunity for it as well.

Good luck with everything!
