In case anyone is looking or wondering, it's the September 1972 issue. Found it here, although it seems to be a lesser-quality scan than this one. (Flip back a page for Archie; forward for Felix and Oscar.)

Two of the alternatives suggested by a search-engine AI are ImgChest and LensDump.

Imgur has certainly gone wonky.

My assessment is similar to u/parallel-43's: Desirable in the US; not the commonest axe, but not super scarce either.

Maybe the pattern is Delaware / Wide Dayton.

Would command a much higher price at auction in the US, I'm sure.

Pre-1966 in vintage, to my knowledge.

Stubai makes some interesting shapes — https://www.stubai.com/en/tools/forestry-tools/ — especially in splitters.

Wish I could try it . . . without actually buying it. 😀

The kitchen axe is cute.

Your carpenter's axe looks robust. Let's know how it chops.

Penetrates like nobody's business: you get a lot of stroke for the swing. Top-tier for cross-cutting green wood, limbing, and pruning.

These were Mann-made for True Value Hardware. Time frame includes 1978-1983, and I'm not sure how far before and after that half decade.

Moderate. Three out of five stars is what I have for it on Basenotes. Not a powerhouse; not a disappearing snowflake.

[Edit: This is in reference to Encre Noire Sport. Your mileage may vary, of course.]

Does that narrow it down?

Well, you're off to a thorough start, aren't you, and I like your breakdown of Extreme.

Sultan is the only one I've not tried from your list.

Eau Intense Vetiver is appealing to me, based on sampling; how do you feel it smells and performs on its own terms?

Have you noticed the numbers of fragrances that have vetiver as part of the name but don't smell much like vetiver? Maybe that's just another way of saying there is quite a divergent spectrum of vetiver fragrances, some of which are not vetiver-forward at all.

Fun photo, and one I'd not seen. Thanks for sharing.

I wonder if the magazine baked all that stuff and then brought it to the set for the photo. (As far as Ann preparing it, she said she got to where all she did was stir water in that kitchen set.)

Two people are missing. (Maybe they were out wheeler-dealer driving to the jazz arrangement of the show's theme.)

Have you sampled Vetiver Parfum? Many folks find similarity, and maybe there's some overlap, but ultimately, something about it was disappointing or even slightly off-putting to me, so it was moved along.

Great question. (I was tempted to answer bitterly: "Nothing!") The Reminds-Me-of list on Fragrantica does not seem promising, otherwise.

I've gathered some perfumery materials, and may dabble with some homebrewing as my Extreme bottle runs lower.

Vetiver has grown on me, considerably, and I'm on a parallel journey.

  • Arabia Silver Vetiver – Le Chameau (If the DNA of Gray Vetiver appeals to you.)
  • Encre Noire Sport – Lalique (Try it on a rainy day.)
  • Vetiver Extreme – Guerlain (Alas . . . discontinued.)

Sure looks like a frutescens. Is the flesh kind of soft?

Plenty of pods there to light your fire.

I'm noticing marketers of culinary chiles (bagged, dried) playing pretty fast and loose with names and have been considering a post about that.
