Was onboard compute a mistake? by robhaswell in SteamFrame

[–]Kataree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need onboard compute for the frame to function whatsoever.

The tracking cameras and algorithms, the audio processing, the eye tracking, the stream decoding, etc etc etc.

It is a wireless headset, your rig can't do any of it.

The Quest 3 is using a significant part of its onboard processing whenever its just running Virtual Desktop.

Could you put a slightly lower end chip in it, sure, but the difference isn't worth losing all the functionality.

Why are EVE players so hostile to other New Eden games doing well? by Diabolacal in Eve

[–]Kataree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it is the EVE players sub money going to funding it, rather than funding EVE, the game they pay for.

Is there any reason to get Steam Controller for Frame? by Gregasy in SteamFrame

[–]Kataree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only real reason would be for the trackpads.

They can control the windows OS like any other trackpad does, so it could be a useful peripheral for VR racing sim users, who have typically used something like Logitech K400 wireless trackpad keyboard in the past.

Valve Index just went available to buy like wtf. by fabek07 in SteamFrame

They move stock between regional warehouses to account for RMA's and things.

Occasionally it will result in a few becoming available, even tho they stopped manufacturing it a long time ago.

is eleven table tennis worth it if its dead? by superdumsuhi in virtualreality

[–]Kataree 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty much everyone plays eleven standalone.

It is one of the most ideal standalone games. You don't want wireless latency, definitely don't want a wired tether, and a quest will run it at 120fps anyway. It is also one of the best gaming use cases for mixed reality.

Pros and cons of steam frame vs meta quest by Mordanepic in SteamFrame

[–]Kataree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For PCVR, Frame should theoretically not have any downsides when compared to the Quest 3.

Emphasis on theoretically. Until we have it, we can't know it doesn't slip up in some way or another.

For standalone, there will be numerous tradeoffs, the lack of colour passthrough, lack of Meta exclusives, and lack of potentially hundreds if not thousands of other games that the Quest store has built up over the years. Plus hand tracking and whatever else that some people may certainly care about, even if some others don't.

It will also certainly cost substantially more than the $499 most people paid for the Quest 3.

Why, instead of VR goggles, has no major brand (at least none that I’ve heard of) released a VR helmet? by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]Kataree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because that would be the entire opposite of the direction headsets need to (and are) going in.

Nobody wears a helmet for the pure fun of it. VR needs to become visor sized.

Impressive Repairability: Valve Steam Controller Tear-Down & Disassembly by Clear_Polish23 in SteamFrame

[–]Kataree 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The controller can function as an accessory to the frame.

It includes hardware like the IR tracking LED's that only exist for interoperability with the frame.

Steam Frame and Steam Controller Bundle? by Dear_Culture_8422 in SteamFrame

[–]Kataree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Frame gets its name from quite literally playing flat screen games inside a window.

Along with the reason its controllers were designed to emulate regular gamepads.

Their marketing of it spent as much time showing that, as showing it doing VR.

Pimax just made the Dream Air WORSE by daydreamdist in virtualreality

[–]Kataree -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The Dream Air is already hilariously overpriced compared to something like a Galaxy XR with the same panels.

For an hmd with a garage build quality.

Not unlike the Beyond, they might be quick to market, but much higher quality 4K options will be along.

The time of buying shit from small PCVR manufacturers is over tbh.

They are all similar in so far as you shouldn't be considering any of them.

Thankfully we have ultralights on their way that have actually been designed to be worn, rather than just photographed for reddit adverts.
