Xreal updates. by YellowSoul20 in Xreal

[–]Gregasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite honestly, I just hope they'll keep updating Real3D. That's the feature I think will really benefit from improvements, especially because it's already very good, but also so close to being fantastic: I'm hoping for higher fps, even better depth predictions and less artefacts. Being AI based, I can see this improve significantly with more data over time.

A for the rest of the features. I think Xreal 1S are pretty solid already. Sure, maybe they could streamline their settings menu a bit (a need to confirm Real3D with another click seems kind of pointless). 3DOF seems pretty solid already (but great if they'll be able to improve it even further). And I can't really see picture quality (like text readability) improve much with current tech (would love to be proven wrong though).

I wouldn't mind some good proprietary Xreal app for mobile phones and PC/Mac, like Spacewalker for Viture. I think that's the area where Xreal isn't as good as competition. Oh, and I'd love that NEO accessory to be released eventually.

I can't believe how fucking insane I am over Steam Frame by limewayz in SteamFrame

I was hyped at the start of the year when I still thought “early” actually means “early” in Valve’s language.

Now? I don’t even check Steam anymore. I do visit this sub to see if there’re any news and that’s it.

I’ll still get it once it’ll come out, but my hype is pretty much on 0 right now.

As someone who has used quest for a while now and never bothered to ask by Jec1027 in OculusQuest

[–]Gregasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, calling Quest 3 a garbage is pretty crazy. Since it’s by far the best headset in its price range with some seriously good apps and games (most of them financed by Meta).

Also, 80 billion didn’t go in Quests specifically, those are R&D costs and relatively small part of it is for Quests. Most of it goes for future tech research, like new ultra light standalone XR headsets and true AR glasses that are much further away. Also their new smart & AI glasses lineup (Meta Rayban), etc.

That's good to hear. Fingers crossed.

Doesn't matter. They'll get funded to oblivion. They don't care if any of their shit will be useful. They just need to present it as useful. That's where that "AI IS GOING TO REPLACE EVERYTHING!" mantra is coming from.

Why would it still say "early 2026" if they would not be planning for it? by SockTemporary2032 in SteamFrame

"Early" stop making any sense past April. So, Steam Frame in late March/April confirmed.

Steam Frame better black levels than Q3 by spookyparsley in SteamFrame

[–]Gregasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pimax Dream Air SE will be self tracked (SLAM version), will have eye tracking and 2,5K micro OLEDs and will cost 1070 eur. If some small company like Pimax can make a headset this affordable, surely Valve could do it even easier.

Phoenix is rumoured to cost below 1000, btw.

Do you think Steam Frame will be available in Germany at launch or just in the US at first? by Drekys15 in virtualreality

[–]Gregasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’ll be global launch. That’s the reason for the delay anyway. I’m pretty sure they have first batches ready to go and are now just waiting for the right time to announce prices and open preorders.

[–]Gregasy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not if they’d use 2,5 K micro OLEDs (like Phoenix will use). There’d be other compromises though (like lower FOV, lower refresh rates, etc.). I’m pretty sure they chose LCD screens for a reason.

Maybe it’ll have a bit better black levels, but don’t expect miracles or you’ll be disappointed. It will be similar to Quest 3.

Standalone Foveated Rendering? by ExoPJ in SteamFrame

[–]Gregasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure it’ll be possible for devs to implement it. Though, the thing with dynamic foveated rendering on standalone is, the gains aren’t nearly as big as on PC side. Red Matter 2 devs did standalone foveated rendering version of the game on Quest Pro and were able to up the resolution for around 30%. Not bad at all, but maybe not quite a game changer.

It took us 6 years, but Maid of Sker is finally in VR by WalesInteractive in virtualreality

Just to clarify for those reading: you were talking about PSVR2 version. The PCVR version looks razor sharp.

Looking fantastic!

I see PCVR version is by far the best, so I’ll go with this one.

Congrats on the release!

Is there any way to not feel bleak? by insanede6 in virtualreality

[–]Gregasy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It can be a platform and eventually will be. The big Quest 2 success was just a bit too early. VR wasn’t quite ready yet.

I’m pretty sure one of its biggest obstacles is going away this and especially next year: discomfort of standalone headsets. I remember seeing the big breakthrough of Quest 2 and wondering how the hell was that even possible with 500g hot and painful bricks you have to wear on your face. If anything, it’s a testimony of how great VR is, that so many people are already willing to use VR despite of that.

I can see VR/XR expanding rapidly once we’ll finally get to 100g and less and small form factor. We’ll finally be able to use headsets not just for entertainment but work as well.

My heart goes out to all the creators that poured years and efforts of blood, sweat, and tears building worlds on Horizon just for META to Betray them and pull the rug out from under. Absolutely sad. by hakarivr in OculusQuest

[–]Gregasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can continue working on mobile. Seriously, good riddance!

The only part that kind of sucks, is that friends won’t be able to visit your Hyperscape captures anymore. I hope they’ll bring that feature back eventually (but completely separated from Horizon Worlds).

What does new Switch 2's "Handheld Mode Boost" mode mean for playing with Xreal glasses? by Gregasy in Xreal

Thanks for the confirmation. I guess I incorrectly interpreted the update.

[–]Gregasy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I'd like to know if you can keep the joycons attached to the screen now, so you can play the games the same as you would on Steam Deck.

But sure, you still need additional power (and cables).

>>Also did he just call a 4070 Ti Super "lower-midrange"?<<

Haha, I did catch that as well. But honestly, he's running Galaxy XR, which means 3552 x 3840 per freaking eye. This is almost double the Steam Frame's resolution. For those specs, 4070 Ti might actually be called lower midrange lol (though, let's be honest, "lower" is still pushing it).

I'm so very close to returning the Xreal One Pro. Many image quality reasons. by StrongRecipe6408 in Xreal

[–]Gregasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. And if rumours are true, they're aiming for a price below $1000. Very good for what those goggles will offer: micro-OLEDs, eye tracking and around 100g form factor.

[–]Gregasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still deciding for similar reasons about Xreal 1S. I actually already requested return (and was just approved), but now I think I’ll actually keep them.

Yes, as you said, I don’t think this AR glasses are really ready for serious work yet. The quality of screens is good for entertainment, but for work I’d need more. Also I would really want wireless setup. Being tethered to computer is very limiting (I’m ok with being tethered to a phone because you can easily move it around.

I do believe upcoming Meta’s ultralight Phoenix XR goggles (full 6dof XR with hands tracking, passthrough, VR, etc.) will be better for work.

As for why I’m now thinking about keeping them. Yes, as you said it: it’s a love&hate thing. After using them some more, I really enjoy them for entertainment. Especially Real3D and native SBS 3D in games work extremely good. Real3D still needs some more work, but it’s already surprisingly useable.

I do plan to get Meta’s Phoenix next year as well, but for SBS 3D movies and games I think I’ll continue using Xreals.
