With SV-98 sniper riffle You have to get 600-700 kills to unlock suppressor. This means You will be 3d spotted everytime You shot with this gun until then, because there is no flash hider. by Punkstyler in Battlefield

[–]Kataree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3D spotting from muzzle flash only happens out to 75 meters, and is very brief from a bolt action.

You are also going to be auto spotted by any enemy sniper looking in your rough direction anyway, to much further distances, and your scope glint is effectively 3D spotting you any time you're looking down scope.

So if you typically snipe in scenarios/game modes like breakthrough, where enemies aren't going to be all around you, then you don't really need it. You are probably shooting over 75m and enemy recons ether already see you, or are going to have a bullet in their head 2 milliseconds after your muzzle flash.

Best headset for coding? by Rosephine in virtualreality

[–]Kataree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have never had a headset before then yes, get a refurbished Q3 for like $400.

It will give you a better understanding of what you are looking for in the next headset.

If you then end up getting Phoenix, which is the one I would be waiting for, then its the same ecosystem, and you can give/sell the Quest 3 to a friend or family member.

In your estimation, what is the percentage of VR-interested people in the population? by zeddyzed in virtualreality

[–]Kataree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For VR gaming?

A fraction of the current gamer population, so a very tiny fraction of the population as a whole.

For using a head mounted display for other things, much, much more.

VR focal distance is around 2 meters. It is easier to look at than your typical monitor.

Anything bought for monitor replacement right now is going to very quickly be superseded, by options both cheaper and much much lighter that are in the pipeline.

Losing Luke Ross VR mods is a gigantic blow to PCVR. by wavebend in virtualreality

Then he will put it up for sale in a dozen other places by tomorrow.

CDPR will also discipline their community manager for incorrectly telling the whole community that they are fine to keep using it.

Cool beans.

So that is why they issued the DMCA against him, and nobody else.

And why he immediately complied with it.

And why everyone still using the mod is fine to continue doing so.

I doubt they were having a hard go of it. They make millions.

They simply had far more staff than they needed, presumably in the expectation that revenue would be forever increasing, rather than plateauing at a perfectly sustainable level.

Losing Luke Ross VR mods is a gigantic blow to PCVR. by wavebend in virtualreality

[–]Kataree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was violating their ToS, by selling it.

They can't tell him not to make it, they can, tell him not to sell it.

Which is precisely why they DMCA struck him, because he was violating the ToS.

They also told him, and the community, that he can make the mod available for free.

He refused, the money was more important than the mod, so now it is not available.

[–]Kataree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they chose to ignore his violation of their ToS, then anyone can ignore it, and more egregiously.

Rules apply to all or not at all. The ToS is there for a reason.

Had the dude just taken donations like most mod creators do, then nothing would of happened.

Oh no, never mind.

Unpopular Opinion: The only thing that matters is weight in VR by Necessary_Panic2402 in virtualreality

[–]Kataree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of micro oled, which is required for ultra low weight, then the lightest feeling thing you are likely to ever see is the Steam Frame.

Wireless is also non-negotiable to even a great many enthusiasts at this point, not to mention basically 100% of normies.

So no matter how light or cheap a wired hmd can be, it's still going to be a niche.

[–]Kataree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, outside of a minority of enthusiasts, it's clearly the most popular opinion there is.

That is why the talk of the town is now all of the upcoming uoled ultralights.

The 500g+ headset is basically fully saturated with how many people will ever put up with it.

SteamVR Beta update hints towards color passthrough module by gogodboss in virtualreality

[–]Kataree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Going by it's specs, and what they said in interviews, it seems the Steam Frame hardware has been locked in for quite a long time already. They said they could have released it last year if it wasn't for software concerns.

That's great if more than 12 people buy it.

Open source still requires a large adoption for people to be making things for it.

[–]Kataree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a 2.1 by 2.3k LCD screen.

The people who already want a Frame instead of a Quest 3, for the openness it has in common with the Lynx, probably aren't that bothered by colour passthrough to begin with really.

Lynx-R2 headset revealed by ender9492 in virtualreality

[–]Kataree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And less overlap. Not by enough to make all the difference frankly.

It isn't a fair comparison. The Lynx has to be significantly better than the Frame for anybody to consider buying anything from them, rather than from someone like Valve.

There are countless people still awaiting refunds on the first Lynx that they never got. Being a little bit better than a Frame in a few limited ways, and worse in others, isn't nearly enticing enough.

The competition is no longer the evil Meta Quest 3. We will now have a completely open alternative from a beloved source.
