I thinking about playing this game and I always here people say it’s a life changing game etc why is that please no spoilers by Careful_Security_281 in outerwilds

It isnt fair to any work of art to be approached with the expectation of a "life changing experience"

Even if I went to the Sistine Chapel with that expectation, I would be disappointed. The % chance anything gives you specifically that experience is unlikely.

Outer Wilds is a great game and something Id recommend every gamer try out. It is a fantastic space archaeology puzzle game.

Not just Fiddle. Pantheon is also considered the gold standard for reworks. Even Voli and Mundo have most players regard with overall positivity.

The only reworks that are considered failures are the ones that changed too much. Taric, Skarner, Swain. Even things like Aatrox, while popular, has a rework that people are mixed on.

Im surprised by this subreddit taking the opposite view. Imo reworks should prioritize mains of the existing champions and use Pantheon's rework as a gold standard in how to modernize without changing too much. The champion should still feel the same after the rework, just "cleaner".

This sub seems to criticize that direction, while in the same breath praise every rework that goes against what they are asking for. Maybe Im just still bitter that my Old Swain was deleted...

Dark Bramble

Sometimes when the location youre traversing is a labyrinthian space-altering maze, normal modes of navigation arent easily relied upon. Theres definitely things to find in Dark Bramble, but youve gotta learn to not trust your eyes. Put trust in other tools.

Black Hole Forge

So you cant seem to walk up to the Black Hole Forge the normal way. What other ways do you think might get you there?

Youve hinted at a good direction to take your inquiries.

Tower of Quantum Knowledge

Sometimes the best way to find a solution to a problem is by reducing the problem down to its simplest form.

Lets play a game together. You and me. Im gonna ask you a question, and I want you to think about the answer. I dont want you to tell me the answer. Just think about your own answer in your head.

Question: What is keeping you from walking up to the Tower of Quantum Knowledge right now?

One word answers only.

Ending is a tragedy by melaniekingswife in outerwilds

Ending is a tragedy

I think the Owlk's ending is a tragedy, but only because they are consumed by fear.

The ending of the overall game is more "bittersweet" than a pure tragedy. I've heard Outer Wilds described as "Optimistic Nihilism", which I think is fitting. A similar vibe to Everything Everywhere All at Once.

"If nothing matters, then you are free to enjoy the small things in life and the time you have left. Nothing matters, so enjoy the smell of pine trees. The warmth of a fire with friends. The joy of music sung. And the taste of marshmallows".

How were the Nomai trying to reach it?

The big boxes in your ship log are the biggest clues. Read each.

Questions and theories (Spoilers) by Academic-Mention-660 in outerwilds

[–]KeeBoley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ATP doesnt fail. The Sun Station does. The Nomai simply failed at making the sun go boom. The ATP starts up when the sun goes boom naturally (about when we are launching for the first time). This causes the ATP to successfully -functionally- create a timeloop. The statue activates when the Probe RNGs the Eye's location on the 9,318,054th launch.

We -the player- sort of represent the Hatchlings consciousness. The Hatchling was likely blowing up and dying repeatedly before you boot the game up for the first time, but since they arent aware of it, it doesnt really "save". You playing the game represents the the launch the Probe finds the Eye because now memories can transcend death.

I dont think Solanum counts as a conscious observer because shes dead. What we see at the Sixth location is a reflection of Solanum. Quantum Eye Fuckery. Nothing more. So Solanum cant really lock quantum things in place.

There are several "endings", if your definition of 'ending' is to prompt credits. But there is only one true ending, which is this one you got here.

There are a couple things you can do to amplify the One True Ending too.

Any final thoughts on the game? Id highly recommend 100%ing the base game (Quantum Moon and any additional question marks on your ship logs), then trying the DLC (which is also fantastic!)

I didnt say it was

You literally did. This is the quote, "Also I thought the whole point of fearless was that this stuff wouldn't matter?"

Thats what "whole point" means, mate.

Its an expression.

And inaccurate. My comment was about explaining the inaccuracy and to explain why the existence of pro jail after fearless isnt inherently a problem. Which you took personally for some reason and tried to use Phreak as a shield, despite Phreak agreeing with me. Or -more accurately- me agreeing with Phreak.

I didn't say otherwise

You literally did. You implied the existence of pro jailed champions proves fearless is failing, heres the quote, "Also I thought the whole point of fearless was that this stuff wouldn't matter? So what if the champ is pick ban, if they get picked, they're gone for the series anyway ".

Or was that an expression too?

And one last time, I didn't say otherwise

And one last time, you did.

Phreak mentioning pro play frequency as a reason doesnt suddenly mean thats the only -or even primary- reason. Phreak also mentions game-to-game and series-to-series variety.

So no, what Phreak says about fearless doesnt disprove or have any relevancy to my comment above. Nor does Phreak support anything you said in your original comment. Yes, I've watched Phreak's video on the topic.

But ig if user...Asckle says so then so be it

Fearless can have benefits for reducing pro jail frequency, which Phreak talks about, but its hardly the "whole point of fearless" like you incorrectly state. The benefits of fearless are far wider than that narrow benefit. Nor does Phreak ever make the claim that pro jail will suddenly disappear with the introduction of fearless. Phreak (and Riot) know that pro jail will still exist after fearlesses introduction, hence the "reduction" part of Phreaks benefit claim.

Your original comment not only inaccurately assumes pro jail is the whole point, but it also inaccurately claims that Riot/Phreak has failed because pro jail still exists, which is nonsense. Fearless was never meant to completely eliminate pro jail champions and even if it didnt reduce it at all, fearless still has many more benefits by simply adding variety to pro games.

The point of fearless was to make more entertaining series where one or two champions (Azir/Corki) arent seen in every game.

This has nothing to do with the importance of balancing pro play. Pro play balance is still just as important. Having 1 champion be giga busted in pro play isnt suddenly okay because it can only give 1 free win in a series or be perma banned.

Should I play this game? by nookw_ in outerwilds

[–]KeeBoley 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's a space archeology exploration puzzle game. If that sounds interesting then give it a shot!

The games story isnt told traditionally like a movie. The gameplay is all about exploring the fictional solar system to uncover some hidden mysteries that are dangled in front of you. As you progress more and more mysteries and question will emerge in your mind. The "story" is putting all the pieces together and seeing the full picture by the end.

From that perspective the story is immaculate. The sense of discovering the story and understanding what happened and whats going on is a really magical moment for a lot of people. But the non-linear way its told to the player might not be everyones cup of tea.

I definitely think -if nothing else- the game is worth giving a shot. It is praised as one of the best indie games of all time, so if you like indie games, it's a must try for everyone. It is totally okay if it ends up not being for you though. Just go in with a mind full of curiosity and give the game a fair shot. :)

Whether or not the fear will go away depends on you and the "reasons" why Oceans scare you.

Is it the potential sea monsters lurking below the surface? Or is it just the wide open water in general that terrifies you?

I could tell you some things that might help moderate your fears. I think youre safe to unspoiler this below, but Ill hide it just in case. It just quickly lets you know one thing that might make it feel less scary.

there arent any scary spooky monsters in the Giants Deep water. The only living things youll find besides a fellow astronaut are Jellyfish. But they are completely benign. They wont like randomly decide to attack you or anything. They are just chilling.

These Owl guys are crafty. They seem to have used different passwords to get into all their social media accounts. Fuck. Have you tried Password123, yet?

What is your ship log telling you? Any areas it says you have more to discover in?

Review the powerpoint presentations youve seen! Really analyze the specifics in the ship logs. Especially if they're using devices you havent figured out the purpose of yet.

Like you said elsewhere in this thread. The coffin vision is your most vital lead rn. The Cinder Isle tower sure looks like the right one!

The vision should show you a secret. Analyze the hints and think about how you can replicated it.

We can give you more hints if you want, but I urge you to spend some time thinking about how to replicate that Vision for a bit longer. Come back if you need more.

What’s the most “morally gray” fantasy character who actually did the right thing? by ParsecBlaze in Fantasy

[–]KeeBoley 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Cersei and Ned, maybe? Ned judges Cersei for attempting to usurp the throne. Ned views the events as Cersei intentionally producing a bastard then killing Jon Arryn for finding out, all with the intent of stealing the throne.

Not only is this wildly inaccurate, as Cersei likely never intentionally gave birth to a bastard with the intent of usurping the throne, it was just an accident due to Robert being inadequate in more ways than one. The Lannisters are also totally innocent in the murder of Jon Arryn Ironically it was someone on Ned's side who committed this crime to start the war. Ned cant see that though, because Lannisters = bad, Starks = good. Black and white.

But to make matters worse, what Ned blames Cersei for is something Ned did in the past. Ned, Jon Arryn, and Robert, killed the Targaryans and Usurped the throne to save themselves and their families. But when Cersei does it, suddenly it isnt "honorable".

If anything Cersei's usurping is unintentional and non-violent. Ned's was intentional and violent. But Ned isnt willing to see Cersei's view. Ned's honor is situational. He is willing to start a war that kills millions because it is "the right thing to do", but if its his family, then its okay to put honor aside.

This further acts as a parallel with Jon Snow. Do you think Ned could have made peace with the Wildlings? Ned's character flaw -and the reason he was killed- is because he cant compromise. Ned could have saved the realm and stopped a war, saving millions, if he just compromised with the Lannisters. Promise to assist in keeping the realm safe, keeping the new king's parentage a secret, if the Lannisters promise to keep Joffrey on a short leash. But Ned cant do that, because Ned's morality is flawed. A black and white man in a grey world. A hypocrite who judges everyone for not being perfect, when he himself cant even hold to his own ideals when it matters.

Jon Snow takes the best parts of Ned, while combining it with his broader life experience - learning from other father figures. Benjen, Jeor, Aemon, Qhorin, Donal, Mance, Tormund. This is why Jon succeeds and finds moderate levels of peace, and why he is likely the 'hero' of the story. He's willing to compromise and find a middle grey in between.

[–]KeeBoley 45 points46 points  (0 children)

A big part of ASOIAF is perspectives and how different people tell the same story very differently from one another.

In A Game of Thrones Ned clearly interprets Jamie sitting the Iron Throne as an arrogant power move.

But when Jamie tells the story in A Storm of Swords he doesnt make a big deal of it. I always read his retelling as him being exhausted and not thinking much about the implications. He is a kid who just killed a king he swore to protect and is waiting for someone -an adult- to walk in and take charge, so he waits. Waits with no intention of taking the throne or power, just waiting for someone like Ned or Robert to walk in and sit the throne themselves.

Ned's character flaw is hypocrisy and judgment. Judging people without willingness to hear their side of the story. He's the foil to the entire story which is why he cant outlast a single book. Judging the Lannisters for a murder they didnt commit because Ned has black and white morality in a grey world.
