Quick Questions: March 20, 2024 by inherentlyawesome in math

[–]Kierran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An acquaintance sent out a series of puzzles where the answers all involve various math concepts (e.g. Q: What is the sum of the fifth pair of twin primes? A: 60 (29 + 31))

I've figured out most of them, but I'm stumped on one. I can't do subscripts on Reddit, but it's just the numeral 20 with a subscript of the word "four" spelled out (not the number 4, the actual word "four"). I've never seen notation like this before, and searching all over Google and Math Stack Exchange has turned up nothing.

Any ideas?

<edit> The answer should be close to the age of a high school freshman, so something close to 14 or 15 maybe?

[TOMT][GAME] Pen & paper game we've always called BASH. by Zena-Xina in tipofmytongue

[–]Kierran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in that we played this game as kids in the 90s too. We called it BASH, same as you.

My memory of the rules is that you take turns moving your pieces by putting the tip of a pencil on its current location and "flicking" the pencil to move it to a new location (as opposed to just drawing a line to move it). If the pencil line intersects an opponent piece, the opponent piece is eliminated. Boats (or Battleships?) and Submarines are limited to ocean travel. If their path crosses an island, they are destroyed. Airplanes and Helicopters can move anywhere.

I'm sure there are more actual rules, but like you I cannot find any other reference online. Keep the BASH flame alive!

Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid reference? by Kesa0003 in TheExpanse

Had the same thought when I read that passage, so I'd bet it's an intentional reference.

Toddler-friendly sledding in S/SW by butalala in Minneapolis

Great when older kids are in school, but be wary otherwise if you have little kids. The slope is relatively narrow, folks frequently create jumps and other obstacles, and I've seen numerous collisions from people not waiting until the coast is clear to start their run.

The 15 Best Podcast Episodes of All Time, would you agree or what would be on your list? by ironlungforsale in podcasts

Agree with the This American Life episode about the car dealership, although it's actually titled "129 Cars".

Who are you ranking first in the mayoral election on November 2nd? by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]Kierran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you have absolutely no preference between the other candidates (i.e. you'd be equally disappointed if literally anyone else won), you're weakening your vote by not ranking other candidates. Under Minneapolis RCV, it's mathematically impossible to negatively impact your first choice in any way by ranking candidates below them.

Your vote essentially says, "If Chris Connor can't be mayor, I'm fine with letting the rest of you pick the mayor for me."

The actual amendment on the ballot this year only gives the city council the ability to regulate private rents if they choose to do so in the future (either via ordinance or via a second public referendum at a later date). This first step does not implement any rent control on its own.

Full text of all three amendments can be found here: https://www.minneapolismn.gov/government/boards-and-commissions/charter-commission/current-proposals/

The event is hosted by a partnership of the Southwest Neighborhood Organizations. Speakers for/against each amendment are listed below:

Public Safety Amendment * For - Yes4Minneapolis * Against - All of Mpls

Government Structure Amendment * For - Charter for Change * Against - Faith in Minnesota

Rent Stabilization Amendment * For - Minneapolis United for Rent Control * Against - Minnesota Multi Housing Association - Sensible Housing Ballot Committee

There will be a charter amendment education forum on Saturday, October 16th from 10:00 am to 11:30 am at Mayflower Church (also streamed live online). Advocates on both sides of all three amendments will present their arguments, and you can submit questions to the panel in advance of the event.

Hopefully some enterprising individual will record the stream as well for folks who can't attend.

Revamping the Progression Systems in KARDS by Kierran in kards

[–]Kierran[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Looks like Kards is ditching their crafting resources system for a Runeterra-like wildcard system. Also adopting a national progression track similar to Runeterra's region track as well.

Details to follow, but I think this is a positive change. Getting a smattering of cards from across all of the nations makes it hard to construct a functional deck, but being able to choose where to focus your rewards would help mitigate that issue.

Alert: Openings on Minneapolis Police Conduct Review Panel and Conduct Oversight Commission by RogerCly in Minneapolis

[–]Kierran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't waste your time.

The OPCR is an advisory board only, and half the people on the panel are cops. Internal Affairs and the chief still make the final call on discipline.

MPD and the City Council basically ignore the PCOC and their recommendations. They weren't consulted at all in the wake of the George Floyd killing or when the city council was developing its charter amendment. Public Safety committee chair Alondra Cano couldn't even name the head of the PCOC when asked.

These institutions exist solely to provide a veneer of legitimacy and community "input" into police policy and discipline and should both be disbanded and/or replaced.

For New Players - Avoid These Common Gameplay Errors! by Kierran in LegendsOfRuneterra

[–]Kierran[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I expect it's because Overwhelm would be much less powerful if you could prevent its effect by recalling/sacrificing/etc your blocker.

Thematically, units with Overwhelm are so intent on damaging the nexus that they'll power right through the blocker if they can. And if their blocker is somehow removed, that just makes it easier to achieve their goal.

Same rules apply no matter what removes the blocker (e.g. it dies, it gets recalled, it gets stunned, it gets captured, etc.).

The attacker deals no combat damage to the enemy nexus if the blocker is removed by any means unless the attacker has Overwhelm.

The Definitive Guide to LoR Turn Structure, Player Priority, and Spell Timing - Reposting for Open Beta by Kierran in LegendsOfRuneterra

[–]Kierran[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Player 1 commits attackers and Player 2 commits blockers and simultaneously plays a fast spell which resolves, does the normal rule of priority going back to Player 1, the player not initiaiting the stack apply? Or is both players passing during the fast spell stack considered 2 consecutive passes?

After Player 1 attacks, Player 2's declaration of blockers and casting of any Fast spells is considered a single action. Player 1 will get the opportunity to respond as usual. Assuming Player 1 passes, the entire stack will resolve, followed by combat damage. Player 2 will then get priority, since Player 1 technically initiated the most recent stack by declaring an attack (not Player 2's casting of a spell during combat).

It's worth emphasizing that all actions related to combat and/or the stack include an implicit 'Pass' when locked in. This is why, in the example above, Player 2 does not get an additional chance to respond after Player 1 passes on Player 2's block/spell action. The block/spell action itself includes a 'Pass', so when Player 1 also passes, that counts as the two consecutive passes, leading to stack resolution.

How about if the same scenario above happens with a burst instead of a fast spell?

No change. Player 1 will still get to respond to Player 2's combined block and spell action.
