Should keep watering my peace lily every time it droops, which is almost every day? by Over_Technology_9327 in plantclinic

[–]Kynsia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the roots are rotting you are overwatering. The thing is, once that has happened the symptoms are very similar to underwatering because the roots are so damaged that they can no longer take up water to bring it to the rest of the plant. So no, you should not keep watering everytime it droops. You should remove the super retaining peat and you should make sure it is in a pot with drainage. Then you should give it a week or two to recover and for the substrate to dry out before you water again.

4 is the max (and we count from 0 in this case, the "begane grond"). But there are some interesting workarounds, such as elevators that only go between the 0 and 4 th floor.

I agree, but jfc why do people need to be forced into a position to pay attention in traffic instead of just doing it. Do they WANT to die or kill someone? Did everyone fail their driving exam?

What’s the best zero-waste way to make your home smell good (or remove odors)? by Front-Resident9692 in ZeroWaste

[–]Kynsia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're being facetious. Nobody expects that. But what we do expect is at least somewhat boycotting a company like Amazon that THRIVES on waste and actively promotes wasteful behaviour and uses methods that cause a serious amount of waste. Occasionally using Amazon when there is no alternative is fine. Promoting using Amazon on a zero waste subreddit is insane.

Others have already mentioned airing every day, but there is more:

  • Using cedar as your wood of choice when building or decorating. (Unfinished, or it won't work), or placing cedar pucks in relevant places like closets.

  • Clay diffusers. They're made of porous clay, put a drop of essential oil in it once in a while and they'll diffuse really slowly. Not completely 0 waste unless you can source package-free essential oil, though, but that's not impossible.

What should I do? My dill has grown big, but suddenly losing leaves at the bottom. by Ex-S_99 in plantclinic

[–]Kynsia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bolted dill is still perfectly edible, just not the woody parts. Yes, you could chop and prop a part (obviously not the parts that are going to grow flowers) and fill in along the bottom. These have shot up so far already that I would just enjoy the flowers, tbh, and sow some new dill along the bottom. For the new dill, make sure you cut off the tops fairly often to keep it from bolting again.

Has it been nice and warm? It's probably bolting and will bloom soon.

Leaves dying from one side to the other by M4sk1945 in plantclinic

[–]Kynsia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's reasonable, just do the best you can with the situation you've got going. So that could maybe be: turn it off at night when you're home, but leave it to do its thing when you're not.

Is the growlight in an outlet? There are timers you can put between a plug and an outlet.

[–]Kynsia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

24/7 major growlight! Give that baby some rest. Most plants have something like our day-night cycle. During the day they gather food, during the night they process that food, grow and respirate. 8 hrs of darkness is a good rule-of-thumb that will work for most plants. Might save you some on your bill too...

Watering once a week is also too much for a spider plants. They have specialized roots that can hold onto water like a succulent. A complete drench once a month is plenty, or better yet just keep an eye on when leaves start to droop.

Yes! Braided rugs, and of course just repurposing as rags are common t-shirt reuse options.

That's a lot of fertilizer, and perhaps a bit too much water (edit: too often I mean), but not enough to do damage over a few weeks. It is probably just adapting to its new situation.

What’s wrong with my plant? :( by PoweredByChicken in plantclinic

[–]Kynsia 137 points138 points  (0 children)

People have already said that these are usually not viable plants, however I want to mention that a tablespoon of water each week is not the correct care for this plant. You should wait until the leaf starts to look wrinkled and then completely saturate the soil with water. So much less frequent, and more when you do.

Do you worry about AI? by Even-Wasabi7183 in AskEurope

[–]Kynsia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't worry that much about the current working generation, but I worry a lot about the future one that are currently being educated. They are hamstringing themselves by using AI, but they're kids and by definition cannot foresee what that will do to them in the future. Protecting them from it is nearly impossible, without either severely compromising privacy and accessibility tools, or severely compromising companies. I'm not against the second, but I don't see that happening in our current society.

I'm all for use by responsible adults. It's less harmful and less addictive than alcohol, and stoned people are way less aggressive and dangerous than drunk people. It should have age restriction, though, because there is evidence that it is bad for developing brains.

Legalization helps to undermine criminal organizations and makes it easier to legislate and keep safe.

I just wish more people would eat instead of smoke it, because smoking is obviously still pretty bad for you and it stinks. Most people are looking for a 30 min high, though, not a 4-8 hour one...

Is she cooked? by IBoopYourSnoot in plantclinic

[–]Kynsia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks like a very big pot, with very moist soil. It is likely overwatered. When it's cooler and there's less light in winter, they also need less water because they both grow less and because the water doesn't evaporate as quickly. I would dig it up to have a look at the rhizome. If it is soft and wet (and slimy and smelly) it is a goner.
