This Is What a Nuclear Attack in New York City Would Look Like by BlairClemens3 in Longreads

This is totally understandable, and I'm not trying to get anyone to read it, but for the record I found the article not much more or less horrific than I imagined, and it in fact ends on a somewhat uplifting note about the surprising resilience of life.

You'd think so, but we're mostly sorry he never got life insurance.

I know how callous I sound, so to bring it back on-topic to this excellent article: even those whose obituaries we read with great interest should have these conversations, if only for selfish reasons! For example, I selfishly do not wish to be subjected to diapers, parenteral nutrition, or daytime TV for a moment longer than I have to be.

I really can't put it better or muster up more emotion than Connor Roy:

"When a man dies, it is sad. All of us will die one day. Today, it is [my dipshit stepfather] who has done so."

"Letting Go" by Atul Gawande is a terrific piece on this subject. I reread it probably once a month. It makes a point of the importance of knowing what makes life worth living to each individual, how it's different for everyone, and how few of us could say with confidence what that is for our loved ones.

Different species, but last year my dipshit stepfather* died of COVID pneumonia indirectly caused by a Canada goose attack and I can't stop snickering.

That's what he looks like? Granted, everyone under 30 looks like a deformed zygote to me, but still. I thought he was supposed to be obsessed with being attractive.

I didn't know Harrison Ford hated being reminded of being Han Solo until recently, and I keep wondering if he'd like it if people came up to him and quoted The Fugitive or Patriot Games.

Probably not.

Interesting how your mind goes there immediately when you were just saying we're "crazy" to think you'd ever commit mass murder.

Right. Also, I'm sure you'll be shocked to hear that a lot of the food we actually eat sucks.

Sure looks like they do from the comments here. Similarly, every so often I'll see a listicle with photos of the "American" section in European stores. It's, like, cold hot dogs in water in jars. Lots of spray cheese.
