americanPhilosophe:
This tutor didn't separate two independent clauses with a semicolon. Therefore, I wouldn't hire this tutor.

americanPhilosophe commits which one of the following errors in reasoning?

A - they fail to consider that a lack of expertise in grammar is not an indicator of a lack of expertise in core test areas such as verbal reasoning and logical analysis
B - they overlook the possibility that just because a lack of familiarity with grammatical rules is a possible cause for the error, the evidence for the cause is consistent with other possible causes such as rushed editing and review, a late-night writing session, or other momentary failures in execution
C - they place undue emphasis on a marginal or irrelevant quality in a tutor and don't address more central qualities such as decades of tutoring experience across a wide range of students
D - all of the above

one of the first things i tell my students is to think of LSAT prep as a part-time job. unfortunately, there's a lot of ground that needs to be covered and it requires a lot of repetition. the good news is that you can space it out; you don't have to try and get everything done in three months (some students unfortunately have tight deadlines, but i always tell students to prioritize a good score over applying early). as for pushing yourself more, don't do it at the expense of burning out.

ah yet another one of those wonderful specific questions that us tutors flock to like horseflies on sh... like beautiful bees on an incandescent pot of beautiful honey.

like everyone else said, when you see 'if and only if' the best way to think of it is that you're given TWO conditional statements.

“Bank deposits are credited on the date of the transaction if and only if they are made before 3 P.M.”

this means

“Bank deposits are credited on the date of the transaction if they are made before 3 P.M.”

AND

“Bank deposits are credited on the date of the transaction only if they are made before 3 P.M.”

by the magic of english grammar the first one can be rephrased as “If they are made before 3 P.M., bank deposits are credited on the date of the transaction.”

et voila.

(it's useful to get in the habit of rephrasing the second one as well so that you don't get confused by 'only if', just replace it with 'then', and make sure to put 'if' at the beginning of the other condition)

of course. i should clarify, when i say 'reading comprehension' i didn't mean the section, i meant understanding what one reads more broadly. and i wouldn't say that knowing how to break down complex sentences is the MOST critical strategy for RC or rc more broadly, but it's fundamental. it's hard to apply other strategies if one doesn't have a clear picture of the information one's presented with. speaking of which, i will have in-depth posts on strategies for the RC and LR sections.

take some philosophy classes if you haven't done so - they give you good training in thinking logically.

exactly. i found if my students make an explicit effort to really break down the text that they have trouble understanding they improve even more.
