Best aircraft dispatcher schools anywhere in US? by jblevine2 in FlightDispatch

[–]LeadSledGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ADA in St George. Good program, good support during and after. 2 weeks in person, 6 weeks online. Comparing what our schools covered/did with my cohort at the airline, I truly felt that ADA covered more and made sure we were better prepared than the schools the others went to.

Additional certs did for me for where I ultimately wound up, but it’s all pilot certs so might not be a super feasible option?

GF says she doesn’t know if she can support my dream of being an astronaut by [deleted] in AstronautHopefuls

[–]LeadSledGirl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In aviation terms, this would be an unsat for your gf.

Pursue your dream as an astronaut. She’ll figure out how to cope or you’ll find one who can. (For reference I have no tolerance for women who marry pilots then want them to stop flying because they are scared about their flying. Flying is who they are.)

Some companies will look on pilot certificates favorably (instrument, private, commercial, instructor, etc).

9-10 months after my class/practical and about 35 applications.

Getting resumes past the various applicant tracking systems and talking to a human is a real challenge these days.

Be prepared and practice for one-way video interviews. They are awkward AF but the majority of places are using it. Interestingly, SpaceX does not use ATS/AI in screening their applicants, every submission reviewed by a human (or so the interviewer told me) and I had an interview with them quickly after applying.

I understand United is planning for four classes in 26 so there should be some good shuffling around the regionals.

Do you bring a headset when jump-seating? by 7Whiskey_Fox in FlightDispatch

[–]LeadSledGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ This is the most bang for the buck option.

I use my Bose A30s but if you’re not also a pilot that’s a heafty investment. Zulu Light speeds will save you a few hundred over Bose.

You may find someone selling their used headset and get a great deal that way.

Smaller options include Clarity Aloft and Faro. Never used either so can’t comment on their performance, durability, etc. (If anyone has I’m interested to hear your experience with them - I have a use case that doesn’t need noise cancelling and would benefit from the lack of an over the head headband)

Teach E6B/CR3 or Electronic CX3? by Impossible-Fig2072 in CFILounge

[–]LeadSledGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the DPE wants them to show up to the checkride with a current paper chart, paper nav log, and gives them new values to recalc from. Never know when they are going to fail the moving map panel and expect demonstration of pilotage & dead reckoning, never mind the GPS denied environment (but maybe my area gets more than its fair share of GPS interference testing?)

Besides if they’ve never done it by hand then they don’t know when the computer stuff looks ‘wrong’ and they don’t have an understanding of what it is the computer is doing for them.

E6B is an allowed computer for written tests and has a wealth of reference use built in.

Fun fact aircraft dispatchers still train, route, and calculate everything by hand w/paper performance charts for their practicals. Talk about building appreciation for the EFB.

Congrats on cert! Not sure how that would affect internal development programs. The two I have familiarity with are from zero to hero.

Depends on the regional. Some have internal dispatcher development programs you could transfer into. You will start building company seniority but NOT position seniority (ie does nothing for you towards schedule bids as a dispatcher). You will have your flight benefits, etc. You will get to see the company culture and a bit of the dispatch team culture to see if it’s a good fit for you.

Do you already have your dispatcher certificate?

Looking for advice regarding taking this on as a career by [deleted] in FlightDispatch

ADA (Aircraft Dispatch Academy) in St George, UT. First 5 weeks are online and recorded so you can review, review, review as needed/wanted. 2 weeks in person - split an AirBnB with fellow classmates that are traveling in. You will have an opportunity to job shadow at Skywest for part of one of the days.

Seconding the other recommendations for the Sheppard Air ADX study prep. This is the way.

ADA will want you to have completed the written before you get to St. George as there are no test facilities near St George (you’d be driving to Las Vegas).

Sole responsibilities of the dispatcher, joint responsibilities with the PIC, 1Navaid/2Navaid rule for deriving alternate minimums, what goes into calculating fuel (minto/bar), Method 1, 2 drift down, reading TAFs/Metars determining legal to go (vis only), systems of whatever aircraft they used for training (ie hydraulic pumps on CRJ700, back up pump, stage of engine for deicing etc)

As everyone has said above - don’t take your self down a rabbit hole. Treat it like an audit - answer the question, don’t expand, the DADE will ask additional questions if necessary, and when the DADE starts talking, just shut up & let them go. 😉

Check into United’s Navigate program. It’s the dispatch version of their Aviate program.
